Intercession to All Saints
Here's why: If we were to trace the origins of Halloween to one specific event in history, it would be when Pope Gregory III (731-741) dedicated an oratory in the original Saint Peter's Basilica of Rome in honor of all the Saints on November 1st, which initiated a local Roman custom to celebrate the feast of All Saints on November 1st. Before this time the feast of All Saints, also known as All Hallows, was celebrated throughout the Christian world since the 4th century to mainly commemorate all the Martyrs either in April or May, including Ireland. St Bede (d. 735) recorded the celebration of All Saints Day on November 1 in England, and such a celebration also existed in Salzburg, Austria. Ado of Vienne (d. 875) recounted how Pope Gregory IV asked King Louis the Pious (778-840) to proclaim November 1 as All Saints Day throughout the Frankish Empire. Sacramentaries of the ninth and tenth centuries also placed the Feast of All Saints on the liturgical calendar on November 1.

THE HOLY WEEK SERVICES OF ST DEMETRIOS THE MYRRH-STREAMER
Thus, they begin on October 19th ("Palm Sunday") and proceed to the feast of St Demetrios on October 26th ("Pascha")
The love and devotion towards St. Demetrios the Great Martyr and Myrrhgusher from the Orthodox faithful of Thessaloniki is truly immense. Though to some it may seem hyperbolic, St. Demetrios has worked countless wonders both for the city of Thessaloniki, and for all the Orthodox faithful throughout the world. In praise of Christ Who strengthened him in his martyrdom, and in honor and thanksgiving to this great Wonderworker, various hymnographers have composed hymns beyond those of the standard Menaia in praise of St. Demetrios. Many of these hymns comprise the so-called "Holy Week of St. Demetrios". This is a collection of pre-festal hymns from various sources in honor of the Saint, and are generally modeled after and grouped correspondingly to the days of Holy Week (i.e. the Passion and Resurrection of Christ). Thus, they begin on October 19th ("Palm Sunday") and proceed to the feast of St. Demetrios on October 26th ("Pascha"). Many of the hymns have been written by St. Symeon of Thessaloniki (+ 1429), so we can see how this is an old and established tradition of this local Orthodox Church.

Since it is not permissible to pray for the unbaptized who have departed this world during the Divine Liturgy or Funeral Services, many Orthodox have resorted to praying to Saint Varus on behalf of their loved ones who died without baptism (this does not apply to those Christians who have committed suicide, rather see the Prayer of Elder Leonid of Optina).

• Synaxis of the Icon of Panagia MACHAIRIOTISSA of Machairas Monastery in Cyprus, one of the 70 icons of her written by the Saint Apostle Luke
The Monastery of the Panagia of Machairas is built on the Troodos mountains beneath the foot of Machairas Hill where Pedaios River runs. This river is the most important on the island of Cyprus. Machairas Monastery is in second position in terms of prestige in Cyprus, after the Monastery of Kykkos. Tradition says that the icon of the Panagia of Machairas is one of the seventy icons painted by the evangelist Luke. The icon of Panagia of Machairas is miraculous, and is known in Cyprus for producing many miracles. The Panagia of Machairas is especially known for healing wounds. According to local tradition, the Monastery was visited in 1337 by Alix d'Ibelin, wife of the Lusignan King Henry IV in 1337. She did not show any respect towards the monks nor the Orthodox Faith and ignored their pleas not to enter the Monastery which was avaton and therefore inaccessible to women. Once she entered the Holy Sanctuary, she was hit by the Panagia of Machairas and remained mute for three years. Tradition links the founding of the Monastery with Iconoclasm. According to an oral tradition during the time of Iconoclasm (716-843 AD), a hermit brought the icon of the Panagia Agiosoritissa, later Machairiotissa, to Cyprus from Constantinople, and settled in a cave at the site where the Monastery is now. After the death of the ascetic, the icon was forgotten and bushes covered the entrance of the cave until the 12th century, when the Virgin Mary miraculously gave a knife to the ascetic saints Neophytos and Ignatios, to cut the bush in order to find the icon (hence the name Machairas, which is translated as "of the knife"). After Saint Neophytos reposed, another monk came to live with Ignatios, an old monk by the name of Prokopios. When the brotherhood became too crowded, these two fathers decided to build a monastery, which would operate under the coenobitic model followed by the great monastic centers of the period. The two monks, were subsidized by the then emperor of Constantinople, Manuel Komnenos (1143-1180) and initially they built a small chapel and a few cells. The Monasteries of Machairas, Kykkos, and Saint Neophytos had acquired special privileges from the time of the Roman Emperors. For this reason, they are Imperial and Stavropegial Monasteries, which means that they have a Cross lying under their foundation stone, and that makes them autonomous from the Archbishopric of Cyprus. The Monastery of the the Panagia of Machairas played an important role in the struggles of the Greek Nation. This Monastery is where important figures such as the Archbishop and Ethnomartyr Kyprianos and the revolutionary monk Ioannikios came from, while during the years of the armed struggle between 1955-59 against the British, the Monastery became a refuge for the hero Gregorios Afxentiou, and there is a small museum with the hero's belongings there. In 1530, a large fire completely destroyed the Monastery, and only the icon was saved. During British rule, in 1892, the Monastery was burned again completely, but again, the icon of Panagia Machairiotissa survived. The icons of the iconostasis and the most important historical relics that were in the library of the Monastery were also saved. In 1905, the Monastery was rebuilt again. Today the Monastery has 25 extremely active and modest monks. They mainly live from agriculture and the donations from Christians. It celebrates on the feast of the Entrance of the Theotokos into the Temple on November 21st.
• The Icon Panagia MEGALOSPILIOTISSA a hideous carving in low relief of the Virgin and Child by Saint Apostle Luke
Παναγίας της Μεγαλοσπηλαιώτισσας
Orthodox tradition has Luke as the first icon painter. Once 600 icons were attributed to him; now only 70 get the official nod from the Church. Still, even 70 icons, one Gospel, and the Acts of the Apostles is a miracle of organization. The beeswax and mastica icon is in relief, its wax about three centimeters thick. Luke made images of Mary something of a specialty; many scholars think he may have actually met her. Certainly the belief that he had met her made his portraits especially venerated as true portraits. The famous Virgin Hodegetria , the protectress of Constantinople, was also attributed to Luke. So, owning an icon by Luke was the top of the tops in Marian iconography and owning it made Mega Spilaion famous throughout the Orthodox world and a pilgrimage site of great renown. It also made it vulnerable to attack in the 800s by the iconoclasts many of whom raged throughout the Orthodox world burning icons and killing their defenders; Mega Spilaion was burned to the ground in 840 by just such fanatics. The icon was saved however and when iconoclasm was declared a heresy, it was reinstalled and the monastery rebuilt. There were other fires, in 1400 and a worse one in 1640 but still the icon was saved. It was this latter fire which blackened her once vibrant pigments. That the wax did not also lose its shape in one of these conflagrations is so unlikely that it is officially listed as one of her many miracles…

PROPHET HOSEA (OSEE) (820 B.C.). MONK-MARTYR ANDREW OF CRETE (767). HOLY MARTYRS AND UNMERCENARIES COSMAS AND DAMIAN IN CILICIA (4TH C.), AND THEIR BROTHERS LEONTIUS, ANTHIMUS, AND EUTROPIUS. TRANSLATION OF THE RELICS (898) OF ST LAZARUS “OF THE FOUR DAYS” (IN THE TOMB), BISHOP OF KITION ON CYPRUS
• The Hodigitria Icon of the Mother of God, named "Before Birth and After Birth the Virgin" (1827)
The Icon of the Mother of God, named "Before Birth and After Birth the Virgin", was transferred to the Nikolaev Peshkovsk monastery of Moscow diocese by the Moscow merchant Aleksei Grigor'evich Mokeev. In about the year 1780 Aleksei joined the brethren of the monastery. He had given all his wealth to the monastery to its monastic head, archimandrite Makarii, and the holy icon remained in his cell. After the death of Aleksei, the icon was brought to the archimandrite, who observed that the icon was written in oil on canvas and not according as proscribed, and he installed it over the exit door to the chapel of the Monk Methodii, which was situated on a street not far from the monastery. The glorification of the holy icon began in 1827, when captain Platon Osipovich Shabashev, going by night past the chapel, saw that from the icon of the MostHoly Mother of God issued forth an extraordinary light. Another time he had a vision of the icon during a period circumstances during his life. In a dream Platon beheld the radiant icon of the Mother of God amidst the clouds over the Methodiev chapel and heard a voice: "If thou dost wish to be delivered from temptation, pray before this icon". Platon obeyed the guidance of the Mother of God, and the sorrow passed him by. The pious Platon told about the miracles to the monastery head, who transferred the holy image into the monastery. When they went to encase the icon in ornament, it then transpired, that the image of the MostHoly Virgin, written on canvas-linen, was stiffened taunt upon a board, on which was concealed a depiction of the Mother of God of finest quality. Especially numerous were the miracles from this icon in 1848 during a time of cholera, when many praying before it were healed.
• The Icon of the Mother of God "DELIVERESS" (1889)
The Icon of the Mother of God "Deliveress", before being brought to the Novo‑Athonsk Simono-Kananitsk monastery in the Caucasus, was situated on Holy Mount Athos with a resident of the Russian Panteleimonov monastery, schemamonk Martinian (+ 1884). The pious schemamonk had received this icon from the ascetic, Theodoul. The holy icon was glorified by miracles from times of old. Through prayer before this icon in 1841 the inhabitants of Sparta (in Greece) were delivered from locusts. From the Panteleimonov monastery, upon the final wishes of schemamonk Makarii, on 20 July 1889 this icon was given over to the Novo-Athonsk monastery, and the festal celebration in honour of it established under 17 October. When the feastday in honour of this icon was first made at the Simono-Kananitsk monastery, a storm cast up on shore at the monastery more than a ton of fish. On the icon the MostHoly Mother of God holds on Her right arm the God-Infant, Who blesses with His right hand.
Synaxis of ALL THE HOLY AND WONDERWORKING UNMERCENARIES
In Greek the Unmercenary Saints are known as Anargyroi, which translates as "no silver", meaning that they received no money for their work as physicians. Each Unmercenary Saint has his individual feast day, while all of them are celebrated together today during their Synaxis, either on October 17th (the Greek tradition) or the Sunday after November 1st (the Slavic tradition. They are usually twenty in number, but with the addition of Saint Photios they number twenty-one.
The Synaxarion of Ormylia Monastery says:
The oldest testimony to the veneration of Saints Cosmas and Damian relates to the basilica built in their honour at Cyrrhus, north of Antioch in Syria, mentioned in the Life of St Rabula of Edessa (c. 400). Their veneration spread rapidly throughout the Empire; in the East, where the famous Cosmidion was founded at Constantinople in 439, as well as in Rome and the West(see 1 July). Their widespread veneration and the dispersal of their relics are probably reasons why Cosmas and Damian came to be regarded as three distinct pairs of saints of the same names.
The following is the list of Holy Unmercenary Saints and their feast days:
• KOSMAS and DAMIAN of Asia Minor // Nov 1 //

Ὁ Ἅγιος Λογγῖνος ὁ Ἑκατόνταρχος
John 19:30-37 When Jesus had taken the wine, he said, "It is finished." And bowing his head, he handed over the spirit. Now since it was preparation day, in order that the bodies might not remain on the cross on the sabbath, for the sabbath day of that week was a solemn one, the Jews asked Pilate that their legs be broken and they be taken down. So the soldiers came and broke the legs of the first and then of the other one who was crucified with Jesus. But when they came to Jesus and saw that he was already dead, they did not break his legs, but one soldier thrust his lance into his side, and immediately blood and water flowed out. An eyewitness has testified, and his testimony is true; he knows that he is speaking the truth, so that you also may (come to) believe. For this happened so that the scripture passage might be fulfilled: "Not a bone of it will be broken." And again another passage says: "They will look upon him whom they have pierced."

VEN EUTHYMIUS THE NEW OF THESSALONICA, MONK OF MT ATHOS (889). MARTYR LUCIAN, PRESBYTER OF GREATER ANTIOCH (312). MARTYRS SARBELUS AND BEBAI (BARBEA) OF EDESSA (2ND C.). ST SABINUS, BISHOP OF CATANIA (760). HIEROMARTYR LUCIAN, PRESBYTER OF THE KYIV CAVES (1243)
• Icon of the Most Holy Theotokos "SHE WHO RIPENS THE GRAIN" ("Prosperess of Loaves", "Multiplier of Wheat") 恩赐五谷丰登之母 (1890)
The Icon of the Mother of God, named "Prosperess of Loaves" ("Sporitel'nitsa Khlebov"), was written at the blessing of the starets-elder of the Visitation Optina wilderness monastery, the priest-schemamonk Amvrosii (Ambrosii) (23/XI/1812 - 10/X/1891). Father Amvrosii, a great Russian ascetic of the XIX Century, was ardent with a childlike faith towards the Mother of God. He in particular revered all the feastdays of the Mother of God and on these days he redoubled his prayer. With the icon, "Prosperess of Loaves", Father Amvrosii blessed the Shamordinsk women's monastery established in honour of the Kazan Icon of the Mother of God, and founded by him not far from the Optina monastery.
On this icon the Mother of God is depicted sitting upon the clouds, and Her hands are extended in blessing. Beneathe – is a compressed field, and on it amidst the grass and flowers stand and lay sheaves of rye. Starets Amvrosii himself decreed the day of celebration – 15 October, and called the image "Prosperess of Loaves", indicating by this, that the MostHoly Mother of God – "is an Helper for people in their labours for the acquiring of their daily bread". Before his blessed death, Father Amvrosii ordered a large quantity of photo-replicas of this icon and distributed and sent them off to his spiritual children. For the singing of an akathist before the holy image, the starets composed a particular response: "Hail, Thou Full-of-Grace, the Lord is with Thee! Grant unto us unworthy ones the dew of Thy grace and the showing forth of Thine mercy!"
The day of burial of Father Amvrosii happened on 15 October – the feastday of the icon. The first miracle from the holy icon was witnessed in 1891, when throughout Russia was a famine because of crop-failure, but in the Kaluzh district and on the fields of the Shamordinsk monastery grain was produced. In 1892, already after the death of Father Amvrosii, his attendant Ivan Feodorovich Cherepanov sent a copy from the icon to the Pyatnitsk women's monastery in Voronezh district. In this locale there was a drought and famine threatened, but soon after a molieben served before the icon, "Prosperess of Loaves", it rained and ended the drought.

• "YAKHROM" (1482) Icon of the Mother of God
The Yakhromsk Icon of the Mother of God appeared to the lad Kosma (Comm. 18 February), whilst accompanying a sick person. Kosma had stopped at the bank of the Yakhroma River, not far from Vladimir, and the sick person fell asleep. Kosma suddenly saw a bright light and heard a voice: "Attend to and consider thou words of life, show a life God-pleasing and desire the joy of the righteous, and then delight thou of eternal blessings". The light had come from an icon of the Uspenie-Dormition of the MostHoly Mother of God, upon a tree. The lad Kosma took hold the icon, carried it over to the sick person, and that one immediately was healed. Kosma after this set out for the Kievo-Pechersk monastery, where he was tonsured and grew in his own spiritual efforts. The Monk Kosma later upon an inspiration from God took with him the wonderworking icon and withdrew to the bank of the Yakhroma at the place, where he had found the icon. The Monk Kosma built a church, in honour of the Uspenie of the Mother of God, and installed within it the Yakromsk Icon. A monastery later formed there.
• Synaxis of the Saints of BARKING // SATURDAY AFTER OCT 11 //
The Monastery at Barking was founded in 666 AD and dedicated to the Mother of God. From the late tenth century the abbey followed the Rule of Saint Benedict. The abbey had a large endowment and sizeable income but suffered severely after 1377, when the River Thames flooded around 720 acres (290 ha) of the abbey's land, which was unable to be reclaimed. Despite this, at the time of the dissolution it was still the third wealthiest nunnery in England. In 870 Barking was sacked by the Danes. Possibly the Holy Monastery was then deserted. In 970 it was re-founded as the Monastery of the Mother of God and Saint Ethelburga. The abbey existed for almost 900 years, until its closure in 1539, as part of King Henry VIII's Dissolution of the Monasteries. It had many notable abbesses including several saints, former queens and the daughters of kings. The abbess of Barking held precedence over all other abbesses in England. The ruined remains of Barking Abbey now form part of a public open space known as Abbey Green. It is recognizable for its partially restored Grade-II Listed Curfew Tower, which features on the coat of arms of the London Borough of Barking and Dagenham.
Here are the main saints associated with the monastery, some of whom feature in the icon above. Various spellings of the names of the Saints are in use.

Ἡ Ἁγία Χρυσὴ ἡ Παρθενομάρτυς
On October 26 of 1912, a Miracle was revealed in Serbia, when the Turks took up arms against the city of Skopje, where the biggest uprising broke out against them after the Russo-Turkish War, which brought freedom to Bulgaria. And before the Serb army, defending Serbia, the holy maiden appeared and helped win the Serbs. Thus ended the 520-year rule of Osmania. In the holy maiden was recognized the Great Martyr Zlata - Golden vessel of virginity and undefiled bride of Christ. It was in 1912 that she was gloryfied as a Saint.
In the Name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit.

• Our Lady of the Pillar (Nossa Senhora do Pilar, Nuestra Señora del Pilar)
Tradition says that in the early day of the Church, Saint James the Greater was spreading the Gospel in Spain, but making very little progress. He was dejected and questioning his mission. About 44, the Virgin Mary, who was still living in Jerusalem at the time, bi-located and appeared to him in a vision to boost his morale. In it, she was atop a column or pillar, which was being carried by angels. That pillar is believed to be the same one venerated in Zaragoza, Spain today. Miraculous healings reported at the scene.
Synaxis of All Saints of ATHENS
The Germans occupied Greece from 1941 until 1944. In the first year of the German occupation of Greece more than 300 000 civilians died from hunger - with Athens especially hit hard. Over 400 000 Greeks died during the Second World War, the vast majority civilians. On 12 October 1944 Athens was liberated from the German occupation and the government in exile returned. As the last German soldiers took the swastika down from the Acropolis and began to drive through the city towards the road north, they passed through crowds of Athenians in a state of joy, waving the blue and white Greek flags, embracing, while bells rang all over the city. It was a happy time for those in Athens who had survived the occupation, but their joy was not destined to last. They were about to enter the most divisive period of modern Greek history - the Greek Civil War. To commemorate the joy of this occasion, the Holy Archdiocese of Athens issued an encyclical on 22/30 September 1999 that a feast be held to commemorate in a synaxis "all those saints in the city of Athens and the surrounding districts: holy apostles, hierarchs and righteous who lived, struggled and died in her." This synaxis was to be celebrated annually on October 12th.
Among those commemorated are Sts PHILOTHEI, NEKTARIOS, DIONYSIUS the Areopagite, PAUL the Apostle and many others who were associated with the city of Athens.
