• " The ALL-MERCIFUL " KYKKIOTISA Icon of the Mother of God (980) was written, according to tradition, by the holy Evangelist Luke, received its name “Kykkiotisa” from Mount Kykkos, on the island of Cyprus
• Hieromartyrs AURELIUS and PUBLIUS (2nd c.)
Aurelius and Publius were bishops who wrote against the Montanists or Cata-Phrygians. They were martyred, probably in Asia, though others place the site in North Africa.

• 5 Polish Brothers: Monk Martyrs BENEDICT, JOHN, MATTHEW, ISAAC and CHRISTINUS (Christian) (1005) from Italy who followed St Adalbert of Prague and were murdered by thieves at their monastery near Gnesen in Poland
They weren't Polish, and they weren't related, but were instead five Italian Benedictine monks who worked with Saint Adalbert of Prague as missionaries to the Slavs, and were martyred together.

May have been a spiritual student of Saint Ambrose of Milan; may have been a bishop of Milan, Italy; may have served in the 4th or 6th century; may have been a martyr. Nothing sure about his life has survived.

• ASTERICUS (Astricus, Ascrick) (1035) born in Czechia, he became a monk and accompanied St Adalbert in the Czech mission. He became the 1st Abbot of Brevnov but had to flee to Hungary where he became the 1st Abbot of Pannonhalma, recently founded by King Stephen, and Archbishop of Kalocsa. Anastasius was the King's ambassador and brought the holy crown of Hungary to St Stephen

Born to the Frankish nobility. Archdeacon of Trier, Germany. Archbishop of Cologne, Germany in 627. Spiritual teacher and advisor to Saint Sigebert III, and co-regent of Austrasia. Known as a great builder of churches and monasteries in his diocese. Legend says that a dove led him to the lost grave of Saint Ursula.
• Repose of Righteous COSMAS of Birsk (1882)
• Hermit and Abbot EMILIAN (San Millan de la Cogolla) (574) a poor shepherd in La Rioja in Spain, he became a hermit and was later ordained priest for the parish of Berceo. The saint, however, returned to his life as a hermit. A large number of disciples gathered around him and he became their abbot. This gave rise to the monastery of La Cogolla. In Spain he is known as San Millan de la Cogolla
Born to a poor farm family. Worked as a shepherd in La Rioja, Spain. Hermit. Priest. Parish priest in Berceo, Spain for some time, but eventually returned to his life as a hermit. His reputation for holiness spread, a large number of would-be spritual students gathered around him, and he agreed to lead them. With them he founded the monastery of La Cogolla, and served as its first abbot.

Archbishop Filaret (born Dmitry Grigorievich Gumilevsky; 1805-1866) was the Russian Orthodox Bishop of Riga(1841-48), Archbishop of Kharkov (1848-59), and Archbishop of Chernigov (1859-66). The son of a priest from the Shatsk district, Filaret is best known as a theologian and church historian. At the precocious age of 30 he was appointed Dean of the Moscow Theological Academy based in the Troitse-Sergiyeva Lavra. During his tenure in Riga (1841-1848) the Governorate of Livonia saw a religious conversion movement, as a result of which more than one hundred thousand Estonian and Latvian peasants converted to Orthodoxy. He also established a school in Riga in February 1846, which grew four years later into a seminary (Latvian: Rīgas Garīgais seminārs). His magnum opus is The History of the Russian Church (1847-48), the first complete and systematic outline of the evolution of the Russian Orthodox Church. It was seen as a clerical counterpart to Karamzin's great history of the Russian state and went through many reprints. This work was later revised and expanded by the likes of Macarius Bulgakov and Yevgeny Golubinsky. Filaret Gumilevsky was a very popular prelate. He is buried in the Trinity Cathedral, Chernihiv. In 2009, the Ukrainian Orthodox Church (Moscow Patriarchate) recognized him as a saint for local veneration.

• Blessed JOHN 约安 "the Hairy" 毛人, Fool for Christ at Rostov (1580) asceticised at Rostov in the exploit of holy folly, in it enduring deprivation and sorrow
He had "hair upon his head abundantly", wherefore he was called "Vlasatyi" or "Hairy". The title "Merciful" was bestown upon Blessed John for the many healings that occurred at his grave, and also in connection with the memory of the holy Patriarch John the Merciful (12 November), whose name he had in common.

• LIAFWINE (Lebuin) Patron of Daventer, Confessor (773) a monk at Ripon in England, he went to Holland and took part in the work begun by St Boniface. He worked with St Marcellinus under St Gregory of Utrecht and founded a church in Deventer. From there he preached to the Saxons and the Frisians

• Hieromartyr LIVINUS (Lebwin) (633/650) bishop in Ireland, martyred with several companions near Alost, Brabant, Belgium
Son of a Scottish nobleman and an Irish princess, he was raised in Ireland, and studied there and in England. Ordained by Saint Augustine of Canterbury. Highly successful missionary to Flanders, Belgium with three companions. Bishop of Ghent, Belgium. Tortured by pagans, his tongue was torn out to stop his preaching; legend says tongue continued to preach on its own.
• MACHAR (Macharius, Mochumna) 玛哈尔 of Iona, bishop of Aberdeen in Scotland (6th c.) born in Ireland, he was baptised by St Colman and became a disciple of St Columba at Iona in Scotland. Later he went with 12 disciples to convert the Picts near Aberdeen
• MARTIN 玛尔提诺 the Merciful 仁慈者, bishop of Tours (316-397) became the patron saint of France. His military cloak became a relic often carried into battle by France’s army. Whenever in the field, a tent was set up to enshrine the relic of St Martin’s cloak, or “cappa” in Latin, and the priests who were entrusted to care for it were called “cappellani”. Eventually, all those who tended to the spiritual well-being of military personnel became known as “cappellani”, “chapelains” in French, “chaplains” in English. St Martin of Tours is the patron saint of soldiers

Physical passions have their origin in physical desires, and against them abstinence is necessary; but spiritual passions are born of spiritual desires, and against them, prayer is necessary.
Byzantine imperial official; may even have been a Praetorian Prefect. Married and father of two. When the children were grown, Nilus and the wife agreed to lead separate lives devoted to God. Monk on Mount Sinai with his son Theodulus. After a few years on the Mount, Arab raiders kidnapped Theodulus. Nilus went in search of him and found him in Eleusa in Palestine where the bishop had ransomed him out of slavery and made him the door-keeper of his church. The bishop ordained them both, and the returned to Sinai. Noted author on theological matters, his works influenced the Eastern Church. Bishop of Ancyra. Friend, supporter and spiritual student of Saint John Chrystostom.
