• Holy Martyr STEFAN 斯特梵 Uros III of Dečani, King of Serbia (1336)
Do not I hate them, O Lord, that hate Thee? (Psalm 139:21)
The King of Serbia, Milutin, had a jealous, scheming wife who turned him against his own son, Prince Stefan. Convinced of the prince's treachery, the king ordered him blinded. In great pain, Stefan finally fell asleep in the Church of St Nicholas. Nicholas appeared to him in the church at Ovèče Polje (Field of the Sheep) and showed him his eyes saying: ``Stefan, be not afraid: behold your eyes in my palm. In due time, I will return them to you.'' Stefan spent five years in Constantinople as a prisoner in the Monastery of the Pantocrator. By his wisdom and asceticism, his meekness and piety, his patience and benevolence, Stefan not only surpassed all the monks in his monastery, but all monks in Constantinople. When five years had passed, St Nicholas again appeared to him and said: ``I came to fulfill my promise.'' He then traced the sign of the Cross on the blind king, and Stefan received his sight. The saint touched Stefan's eyes and then vanished. When Stefan woke up, he could see! However, he kept this a secret, still wearing cloth bandages over his eyes, and pretending to be blind. After three more years, King Milutin died. Prince Stefan told how Saint Nicholas came and his sight returned. Then Stefan returned to Serbia and became king. While he was king, he founded Decani Monastery, with a monastery church dedicated to St Nicholas. He also founded a leprosy hospital. In gratitude to Saint Nicholas King Stefan sent a silver altar and great icon to the Saint Nicholas basilica in Bari, Italy. Saint Nicholas appeared to King Stefan a third and last time, saying "The Lord is calling you to him, Stefan—be ready to depart this life." Preparing for his death, the king gave his riches to the monastery ahd leprosy hospital. Soon after, his own son led an uprising and had King Stefan killed. Stefan lived his earthly life as a martyr, and died as a martyr in the year 1336, receiving the wreath of immortal glory from the Almighty God Whom he had faithfully served.

• MARTIN 玛尔提诺 the Merciful 仁慈者, bishop of Tours (316-397)
One winter while on duty in Amiens, France, as a 4th century Roman soldier, Martin, yet a catechumen, came across a beggar barely dressed in rags and freezing in the cold. Moved with compassion, Martin drew his sword and skillfully slashed his own military cloak, giving half to the poorly clad beggar. Later that night in a dream, Christ appeared wearing the same torn cloak Martin had given to the beggar. Thereafter, Martin was fully received into the Faith, was released from military duty, settled in France, founded the area’s first monastic community, and went on to become Bishop of Tours. Having endured scourging and exile, Martin courageously and continually refuted the Arian heresy and defended the fullness of the Gospel. Upon his death in 397, Martin became the patron saint of France. His military cloak became a relic often carried into battle by France’s army. Whenever in the field, a tent was set up to enshrine the relic of St Martin’s cloak, or “cappa” in Latin, and the priests who were entrusted to care for it were called “cappellani”. Eventually, all those who tended to the spiritual well-being of military personnel became known as “cappellani”, “chapelains” in French, “chaplains” in English. St Martin of Tours is the patron saint of soldiers.
