• MOLCHENSK (1405) Icon of the Mother of God in the Molcha swampland not far from Putivl'
The Molchensk Icon of the Mother of God appeared on 18 September 1405 in the Molcha swampland not far from Putivl'. At first it was situated in the Molchensk Sophroniev wilderness monastery, but in 1605, specifically on 24 April, it was transferred to the Putivl'sk monastery.
• Icon of the Mother of God named the "HEALER" (4th century) appeared as a copy of an image from the Tsilkan church in Kartalin in Georgia, written during the time of the holy Equal to the Apostles Nina
The "Tselitel'nitsa" ("Healer") Icon of the Mother of God, situated in Moscow, appeared as a copy of an image from the Tsilkan church in Kartalin, written during the time of the holy Equal-to-the-Apostles Nina (IV Century). The icon depicts the Mother of God, standing at the bed of a sick clergyman.
• Icon of the Mother of God named the "HEALER" (1794) in the St Alexis Monastery in Moscow
The original icon known as "Tselitel'nitsa," or "The Healer" was from the Tsilkan church in Kartali, Georgia. It was painted at the time of St Nino (January 14).
There is another icon with the same name in the Alexeev women's monastery in Moscow, and many miracles took place before it at the end of the eightheenth century. St Demetrius of Rostov (September 21 and October 28) relates a story about this icon in his book "The Bedewed Fleece". A cleric of the Navarninsky church, Vincent Bulvinensky, was in the habit of venerating the icon of the Mother of God whenever he entered the church. He would also recite the following prayer before the icon: "Hail, Virgin Theotokos full of grace, the Lord is with Thee. Blessed is the womb which bore Christ, and the breasts which nourished the Lord God, our Savior."
In time, he found himself suffering from a dreadful affliction. His tongue began to putrefy, and he passed out from the pain. When he came to himself, he prayed his usual prayer to the Most Holy Theotokos.
As soon as he had finished his prayer, he saw a handsome young man at the head of his bed. The sufferer realized at once that this was his guardian angel. The angel looked at him with pity, calling on the Mother of God to heal him. Suddenly, the Theotokos appeared and healed the sick man who was so devoted to Her. He got out of bed and went to church, taking his place on the kleros for the service. Those present were astonished to see his recovery.
This miracle inspired the painting of "The Healer" icon depicting the Mother of God standing at the bed of the sick man.

• Translation of the Icon of the Mother of God in Triumph to Russia. The Tikhvin STARORUSSK (returned in 1888) Icon of the Mother of God, of Stara Russa
The Starorusskaya Icon of the Mother of God was titled such because for a long time it was located Stara Russa, whither it had been brought by the Greeks from Olviopolis during the very first period of Christianity in Russia. The icon was situated in Stara Russa until the XVII Century. In 1655 during the time of a plague it was revealed to a certain inhabitant of the city of Tikhvin that the pestilence would cease, if the wonderworking Starorusskaya Icon were transferred there, and the Tikhvin Icon sent to Stara Russa. After the transfer of the icons the plague ceased, but the Tikhvin people did not return the icon and only in the XVIII Century did they give permission to make a copy from the Starorusskaya Icon, which on 4 May 1768 was sent to Stara Russa. A feast was established in honour of this event. On 17 September 1888 the original was also returned to Stara Russa and a second festal date established.

• "TSAREGRAD" (1071) Constantinople Icon of the Mother of God
The locally honored Constantinople Icon of the Mother God is found in the Old Rus Cathedral (Novgorod Diocese). The icon by measurement is 2 diuma (2 inches), and was beaten out on a slate board. According to tradition, in ancient times two monks from Constantinople, passing through Old Rus, attended the liturgy in the Cathedral and left this icon there as a memorial. A great many believers streamed to this holy icon and took the water consecrated by immersing the holy icon in it, with the hope of healing sick babies.
• Makar'evsk (named in a memory of Monk Makarij the Wonderworker) "DIRECTRESS" (Hodegetria, "Way-Guide") (1442) Icon of the Mother of God
The Makar'ev "Hodegetria" ("Way-Guide") Icon of the Mother of God appeared during the reign of prince Vasilii Vasil'evich the Dark (1425-1462) to the Monk Makarii the Wonderworker, who asceticised on the desolate shores of the River Unzha. On 17 September 1442 at about the third hour of the morning, when the Monk Makarii was finishing his usual morning akathist song to the MostHoly Mother of God, his cell was illumined suddenly by an unknown light. The monk became confused in spirit and began fervently to pray. Beyond the cell walls he heard the angelic refrain: "Hail, Thou Full of Grace, O Mother Unwedded!" With fear and astonishment the monk went out from his cell and on the northwest horizon he saw the icon of the Mother of God, surrounded by a luminous radiance. The icon approached towards the cell of the ascetic. With joyful trembling the monk fell to the ground and cried out: "Hail, Mother of God! Hail, Thou Ever-Flowing Fount issuing salvation to all the world and assuring protection and intercession to all the Galich land!" He reverently took up the icon and placed it in his cell, whereby it also came to be named the "Cell-Icon". Afterwards the disciples of the monk gave it the title of "Makar'ev". On the place of the appearance of the holy icon was founded a monastery, likewise named Makar'ev. From the Makar'ev Icon of the Mother of God there were made copies, which became reknown just like the original.

The UNIVERSAL EXALTATION of the Precious and Life-Giving CROSS of Our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ (629) 普世举扬尊贵施生命之十字圣架
Ὕψωσις τοῦ Τιμίου καὶ Ζωοποιοῦ Σταυροῦ
The feast was celebrated in Rome before the end of the 7th century. Its purpose is to commemorate the recovering of that portion of the Holy Cross which was preserved at Jerusalem, and which had fallen into the hands of the Persians. Emperor Heraclius recovered this precious relic and brought it back to Jerusalem on 3 May 629.
Fast Day on whatever day the Feast falls.

• Icon of the Mother of God of LESNA (1683) 莱斯纳
The Lesna Icon was found on 14 September 1683 by a shepherd, Alexander Stelmashuk, of the town of Lesna, Bel'sky uezd, Grodnenskaya guberniya, in a thick forest on a pear tree surrounded by a brightness. The holy icon did not stay with the shepherd. It was confiscated by a Catholic Polish landowner. Misfortunes which then befell him moved him to give the icon to an Orthodox church in the town of Bukovich, near Lesna. Then again it was taken away by Catholics and placed in a Catholic church, which, in 1863, was handed over to the Orthodox faithful. At the same time the holy icon was returned. The icon is carved into a dark red oval stone. Some 500 miracles from it have been counted. It's feast day is on Pentecost, and on 8 September. The Icon is kept in France, at Lesna Convent in Provemont. Only once did it leave the Convent ― on the 1000-year anniversary of the Baptism of Russia in Paris.

Holy New Martyrs of JASENOVAC Concentration Camp
The martyrs are commemorated together on September 13, although a number of them are also commemorated separately, as the dates of their martyrdom are known. This is a particularly poignant icon, because we have still among us survivors of the Ustasha terror of World War II, and many whose loved ones found martyrdom. Moreover, it is an important icon inasmuch as it will witness not only to the faith of these martyrs, but also to the genocide of Serbs itself, which many ignore, forget or deny having occurred. A vast sea of haloed martyrs stands before a background showing the Jasenovac concentration camp in the upper left corner, with ominous grey walls, barbed wire and watchtowers. The Churches of Jasenovac (destroyed, sadly, twice now by Croats) and Glina (burnt to the ground with 500 Serbs in it) are shown centrally, while the upper right corner shows one of the many caves of Lika, Dalmatia, Bosnia or Hercegovina that became the graves of numerous innocents. In the lower foreground is a river perhaps the Sava, the Una, the Vrbas, or the Drina, all of which carried the tortured bodies. They bear crosses and appear peaceful, as they have accepted their martyrdom. The standing figures in the foreground are identified individually with an inscription in their halo. What touches many of us when we contemplate this fresco is that these Holy New Martyrs are every man: a peasant, a student, a teacher with her pupils, a nun, an old woman, a priest, a bishop, a child. All of them were killed for the simple fact that they were baptized in and lived by the Orthodox faith. For this, they are crowned with martyrdom; Christ blesses them, while on either side St. John the Baptist (patron of the Jasenovac Church) and St. Sava (patron of the Serbian people) intercede on their people’s behalf.
April 22 - Anniversary day of the prisoner breakout from Jasenovac Concentration Camp. For us Orthodox Christians, this is not 'the City of the Dead,' but the City of Alives, as for the Lord all the martyrs - victims of Jasenovac - are alive. The innocent victims of the Great-martyrdom of Jasenovac live in our hearts, as well as in our souls, in the memorial prayer of recollection. All of them, together with us, await for the resurrection of the dead and life of an age to come.

They all suffered for Christ the Lord at Myropolis in Phrygia, during the reign of Julian the Apostate. They were harshly tortured for destroying the statue of an idol, and were burned on an iron grid until they gave up their souls to God. While burning over the fire, these brave men cried out mockingly to their torturer, saying: ``Wouldn't you like to try our meat to see if it is well cooked?'' And also, like the glorious Archdeacon Lawrence, they said: ``Turn us over onto the other side, for this side is done!'' Witnessing the holy martyrs on the fire, the torturer was more perplexed and frightened than they were.

Ὁ Ἅγιος Χρυσόστομος Σμύρνης ὁ Ἐθνοϊερομάρτυρας
After the defeat of the Greek Army in Anatolia and the reoccupation of Smyrna by the Turks, Chrysostomos refused to leave Smyrna and abandon his flock. The metropolitan was abducted by a mob incited by Nureddin Pasha on September 9, 1922. According to eyewitness accounts, he was tied to a barber chair, cruelly tortured, and put to death.
"According to the French observers,...'The mob took possession of Metropolitan Chrysostom and carried him away,...a little further on, in front of an Italian hairdresser named Ismail...they stopped and the Metropolitan was slipped into a white hairdresser's overall. They began to beat him with their fists and sticks and to spit on his face. They riddled him with stabs. They tore his beard off, they gouged his eyes out, they cut off his nose and ears.' The French soldiers were disgusted by what they saw and wished to intervene, but their commanding officer was under orders to remain strictly neutral. At the point of a revolver, he forbade his men from saving the metropolitan's life. Chrysostom was dragged into a backstreet in the Iki Cheshmeli district, where he eventually died from his terrible wounds."

Little else is known for sure, but many stories and much speculation have attached to Ailbhe. He may have been the first bishop of Emly, Ireland. He may have founded a monastery at Killeaney, Inishmore, Ireland. One old story stays that he was born to parents so poor that they were unable to feed him, and abandoned him in the deep woods; a she-wolf, running from hunters, settled beside the baby and suckled him as one of her cubs; the hunters found them, saved the baby and spared the wolf.

Afterfeast of the NATIVITY of the Theotokos
• A Weeping icon of the Most Holy Mother of God of Kazan, in KAPLUNOVKA (1689) 卡普路诺夫卡
The Kaplunovsk Icon of the Mother of God, after its wondrous appearance in a dream to the priest Ioann, on 11 September 1689 had been purchased by him from a Moscow iconographer, who was passing through the village of Kaplunovka. One time, on the Third Sunday of Great Lent, the icon shone with an extraordinary light, and was then transferred into the local Kaplunovsk church. The Kaplunivska Icon of the Mother of God of Kazan became famous for its association with Hetman Ivan Mazepa and the Battle at Poltava in 1709. Peter I took this icon to keep with his army. The Lutheran soldiers of King Charles XII of Sweden went to burn down the Church in which the icon was enshrined, but to their great mystification, the Church would not catch fire despite their concerted efforts. Charles then asked Hetman Mazepa what shrine was housed in the Church that protected it from burning. When the Hetman told the king about the Kaplunivska icon, the king then asked where it was now. When the Hetman told the king that the tsar had it, King Charles became sullen and said that it was doubtful if they would ever defeat Peter as a result.

The Zimnenska icon was given to the Zimnensky monastery by St Volodymyr the Great as he often retired to Zimnenske during the winter. The icon itself was a gift to St Volodymyr frm the Ecumenical Patriarch of Constantinople on the occasion of his wedding to Anna of Constantinople.

One night, the spiritual father of this monastery saw himself in Paradise, and saw Euphrosynus there as well. Euphrosynus picked and gave him three apples from Paradise. When the spiritual father awoke, he saw three unusually beautiful and fragrant apples by his pillow. He quickly found Euphrosynus and asked him: ``Where were you last night, brother?'' ``I was where you were, father,'' the blessed God-pleaser replied. The spiritual father then revealed the entire incident to the monks, and all recognized the sanctity and godliness of Euphrosynus. But Euphrosynus, fearing the praise of men, immediately fled the monastery and hid in the wilderness, where he spent the remainder of his life.

Afterfeast of the NATIVITY of the Theotokos
Sunday before the Universal Elevation of the Precious and Life-Creating Cross of the Lord

• Finding the icon of the Most Holy Theotokos of SEPTA (1825)
• Synaxis of the Icon of the Theotokos "TRIKERIOTISSAS" (1825)
The tiny island of Old Trikeri, in Greece's Pagasitic Gulf, is as quiet an island as can be found this side of deserted. There are no cars, no police, no schools, no doctors, no bakeries. Numerous tracks shaded by trees criss-cross the island, but there are few roads. Tucked away into a curve of the Pelion peninsula, a short sea-crossing from the mainland, it's been mouse-quiet for centuries.
Approaching the island, the first signs of civilisation you might notice are three or four plastic chairs perched on the headland, put there because it's a nice, breezy place to sit after the heat of the day. Coming into the port you dock beside a rusty old tub, tipped up on its side and used as a diving platform by local children. There's a jumble of fishing boats in front of the first of the island's two tavernas and a strip of scruffy beach where vegetables are sold twice a week. The village's only shop, further along the harbour-front, is little more than a large cupboard.
In winter the island is often wet and grey, and the population dwindles to between 30 and 60 inhabitants, mostly fishermen and people staying on to tend the animals while the grey-green olive trees rattle in the wind. But once a year, as many as 2,000 souls arrive on Old Trikeri in search of miracles. For it is here that the miracle-working icon of Our Venerable Lady Virgin Mary was unearthed, on 10 September 1825.
The early inhabitants of the island first migrated to the mainland sometime in the 11th century, fearful of pirates who were plundering the area, and the island remained deserted until the 19th century when a monk named Damianos Koslis set up home in a cell down by the old port. Nothing much had changed in the intervening centuries. The olive trees were pretty much the same trees, and though paths had been lost and the church of the Virgin Mary had fallen into ruin, pirates still menaced the area. It was fear of them that made Damianos Koslis build a shack as a hiding place beside the tumbledown church. And here, one dark night, the Virgin Mary appeared to him in a dream.
The Virgin ordered Damianos to dig in the ruins where, beneath a wild olive, he would find her lost icon. She appeared to Damianos three times before anyone took the monk seriously, and when, with help from the mainland, he finally dug up her icon, it glowed and let off an endless fragrance. A great celebration was held, and over the next three years a new church dedicated to the Virgin was built beside the ruins of the old.
The Monastery of the Annunciation of the Virgin Mary stands today in all its splendour, a mere 10-minute walk from the village. In normal times it has few visitors and seems almost too grand a building for so small an island. I was only staying on Old Trikeri for three days and did not hear about its icon until I was due to leave. I was curious to learn more about it, and it was suggested I talk to the local priest.
The monastery was up a steep rubble-strewn path rutted by the previous winter's rains. A long, thin building, on the day of my visit it was besieged by 10 or more local women frantically tugging up weeds from between stones; others were watering flowers and polishing candlesticks, crosses, steps, cups, and anything else that could be polished. The monastery was undergoing a spring-clean in preparation for the pilgrims due to arrive that weekend.
The priest was an anxious little man dressed in grubby robes. He was supervising the women, and although he'd agreed to spare a few minutes, it was obvious he wouldn't have time to answer more than a couple of questions. What I wanted to know most of all was what miracles had actually been performed. Either he found the question impertinent or his English was not as good as I'd been led to believe, but whatever, a cleaning crisis materialised and he disappeared.
The icon itself was inside the monastery, the frame supporting it and with which it would be carried in procession, leaning against an alabaster pillar painted to resemble marble. Both the face of the Infant Jesus and the Virgin were too dark to make out, either blackened by fingers, time, or more likely a century of smoky incense wafting about the church. Surrounding the icon, and now encased with it behind glass, were heirlooms – gold and silver rings and a late-Victorian gold watch, the offerings of earlier believers.
I still do not know what miracles were performed, not even after rooting around on the internet to find an answer. Perhaps the icon simply being dug up and found was miracle enough. Certainly if that had not happened, if the Virgin Mary had not come to Damianos Koslis in a dream, the monastery itself would never have been resurrected from the ruins.
I did not go to Old Trikeri in search of miracles, but by the time I left I'd begun to wonder if some could be so subtle that you would hardly recognise them when they happened. Perhaps in these troubled times it is miracle enough to find such a simple and beautiful place as the Holy Monastery of the Annunciation of the Virgin Mary, with its cloistered courtyard that on most days is an oasis of silence, surrounded by olive trees on top of a hill that looks down through a haze of heat to a warm and glittering blue sea.
• Synaxis of the Theotokos "ORCHOMENIOTISSA" ("Panagia Skripou") (1943)
On 8 September 1943, the day of the feast of the Nativity of the Theotokos, the Italians capitulated and in the beginning refused to surrender their weapons to their German allies. In Orchomenos of Boetia the regional organization E.A.M. felt they could capitalize on this and accept the Italian arms. The Italians refused this and went with their weapons to Livadia. On the way the Germans surrounded them and disarmed them, and the Italians betrayed the people of Orchomenos by stating their intentions. When the Germans learned of the intentions of the people of Orchomenos they sent against them the next day, September 9th, armored vehicles. When the people of Orchomenos heard this they left and arrived at the crossroads of Agios Andreas, unprepared and disorganized as they were, and scattered throughout the surrounding area to the most remote Dionysus (Tsamaliou). The Germans continued the chase, to retaliate against Orchomenos, as was their usual tactic.
When the Germans entered Orchomenos they took 600 hostages, left a section in the village, and sent three tanks against the rest to Dionysus. On the night of the 9th towards the 10th of September, at around midnight, about 550 meters away from the Byzantine Church of the Panagia Skripou (established in 874 AD), the three German tanks were immobilized for no apparent reason. As the German commander known as Hoffman later recounted, the form of a woman had appeared in the night sky with her hand raised in a prohibitive stance. Commander Hoffman then requested a tractor to pull the tanks, and he beheld another miracle when the tractor was able to easily pull the heavy tanks like an empty matchbox. He then proclaimed "miracle! miracle!" and asked the residents to take him into the church. From the icon in the church the commander recognized the woman to be the Virgin Mary. He fell down on his knees and said: "This woman saved you! You must honor her and glorify her!"
Orchomenos was indeed saved by the Panagia and the 600 hostages were freed with a vow by the commander that the village would not be harmed. Following the war, Commander Hoffman returned to the Church of Panagia Skripou, donating an icon of the vision he saw along with an large oil lamp. Just about every year he returned on September 10th to commemorate the event and light a candle in the church. For this reason the Panagia Skripou celebrates a feast on September 10th every year. A procession takes place with the icon on this day to the spot where the tanks were immobilized.

• Martyr BARYPSABAS 瓦里普萨瓦斯 in Dalmatia (2nd c.) hermit; Keeper of the Blood of Christ
Ὁ Ἅγιος Βαρυψάβας ὁ Μάρτυρας
Saint Barypsabas (or Varypsavas) from Dalmatia received the honorable blood of our Lord Jesus Christ which ran from His side from a certain hermit, and through it worked many healings. For this reason one night he was beaten to death with clubs by unbelievers, who supposed the healings by the blood could be sold for a price. Barypsabas, however, kept the blood well concealed for them to not lay their hands on it. From then on the honorable treasure of the Master's blood was kept by the disciple of the Saint. Saint Nikodemos the Hagiorite explains that this blood in the possession of Barypsabas was not the blood that came directly from the side of Christ when He was crucified, since, according to the opinion of Gregory the Theologian, this blood rose together with Christ. Rather, it was most likely the blood that poured out from the icon of the Master Christ that was in Beirut when certain Jews stabbed the side of Christ depicted. This blood, which was brought to Constantinople, was considered by Christians to have been the blood of Christ, and worked many miracles.

• Commemoration of the THIRD ECUMENICAL COUNCIL (431) in Ephesus 纪念第三次神圣普世大公会议
Μνήμη τῆς Γ’ Ἁγίας Οἰκουμενικῆς Συνόδου
This Council met in Ephesus in 431 A.D. at the time of Emperor Theodosius the Younger. There were two hundred holy fathers present at this Council. This Council condemned Nestorius, the Patriarch of Constantinople, because of his heretical teachings concerning the Most Holy Virgin Mary and the birth of the Lord. That is, Nestorius did not want to call the Holy Virgin, the Birth-giver of God [the Theotokos] but rather the Birth-giver of Christ. The Holy Fathers condemned the teachings of Nestorius and confirmed that the Holy Virgin be called the Theotokos. Besides this, the Council confirmed the decisions of the First and Second Ecumenical Councils, especially the Symbol of Faith, the Nicaean-Constantinopolian Creed, ordering that no one take away from nor add to this Creed.
