Forefeast of the NATIVITY of the Theotokos
Προεόρτια Γεννέσεως Ὑπεραγίας Θεοτόκου
The following are from the church hymns for this day. "Today David exults, Jesse now leaps for joy and Levi is magnified; Joachim the righteous rejoices in spirit, and Anne is freed from childlessness". "Mountains, break out in gladness, Apostles and Martyrs, dance, Ascetics and Righteous now rejoice". "Today has been brought to birth the bridge which leads humanity to light, heavenly ladder" and "Now the fog of wickedness begins to grow less; for the living cloud of the sun has dawned from barren loins". "As we see her today in the bosom of Anne, leaping for joy, with faithful Joachim" "Let us offer praise to the Redeemer, the Lord who from a barren womb gave us the Mother of God" and "In gladness today with joy sing the praise of the nativity of the Mother of God". The first lesson at Great Vespers (Genesis 28:10-17) describes Jacob’s dream of a ladder reaching from earth to heaven, and the angels ascending and descending upon it. The second lesson (Ezekiel 43:27-44:4) speaks of the gate of the sanctuary which faces east. God enters through this gate, which is shut so that no one else can enter by it. The third reading (Proverbs 9:1-11) talks about the house that Wisdom has built. These readings are interpreted as prefiguring the Mother of God.

She was born in Constantinople to a noble family, and grew to be unusually beautiful and learned — so much so that she was chosen to participate in a ‘bride show’, at which the Emperor Theophilos was to choose a wife. Struck by Kassia’s beauty, the Emperor approached her and said ‘Through a woman came forth the baser things,’ referring to Eve’s transgression. Kassia responded, ‘Through a woman came forth the better things’, referring to the Incarnation of Christ through His Most Pure Mother. Stung by her reply, the Emperor rejected her and chose Theodora as his wife. Kassia entered monastic life and founded a women’s monastery in Constantinople, closely allied with the Stoudion Monastery. Serving as abbess of the monastery, she wrote many liturgical hymns, at least twenty of which are included in the services of the Church. Best-known (or at least most closely associated with her) is the Hymn of Kassiani, sung at Matins on Holy Wednesday. She reposed in peace.
