Though illiterate, Spyridon knew the entire Psalter by heart and worked many miracles during his lifetime. An instance is known, when he extinguished his mantle which had caught fire from the oven – the fire was put out, but the mantle remained whole. The fingers of the right hand of the Monk Spiridon are positioned together 3-fingered.

Words are powerless to convey the destruction that the enemy wrought: tearing infants from their mothers’ breasts, they beat their heads against the bridge, watching as their eyes dropped from their skulls... A river of blood flowed through the city. The Turkmen castrated young children, raped women, and stabbed mothers to death over their children’s lifeless bodies. The whole city shuddered at the sound of wailing and lamentation. The river and streets of the city were filled with death.

NEW MARTYRS AND CONFESSORS in the 20th century
• Holy Priestmartyr JOHN 约安 Kochurov of Chicago and St Petersburg (1871-1917) Missionary in America First Clergy and 1st Hieromartyr of the Russian Revolution of Russia's atheist yoke
He was born in Russia in 1871, and as a young priest was sent to America as a missionary. There he worked zealously (he was instrumental in the building of the Orthodox cathedral in Chicago) until he was called back to Russia just before the October Revolution in 1917. Only 6 days after the Bolsheviks seized power, he was beaten to death in the street by a gang of Bolshevik sailors in Tsarskoye Selo near St Petersburg. Thus he became the first of countless Priestmartyrs of Russia's atheist yoke.

Among the people watching the torture was a woman with infirmity of the eyes; a droplet of blood from the martyr healed her infirmity.

• Righteous PETRO Kalnyshevsky, Koshevoy-Commander of the Zaporozhian Cossacks (1803)
After the destruction of the Zaporizhian Sich, Kalnyshevsky was arrested, tried and in July 1776 incarcerated at Solovetsky Monastery, with the strict prohibition of correspondence or socialization with anyone. In 1792, he was transferred to solitary confinement at the Povarnya jail, where he remained until 1802. Being pardoned by Emperor Alexander at the age of 110 years, Kalnyshevsky (already blind at that time) decided to remain in the monastery, where he died two years later in 1803.

Son of a Roman senator. Convert to Christianity. Missionary to Gaul with Saint Lucian of Beauvais. Quentin's preaching and example won many converts in Amiens. Arrested in 286 by Prefect Rictius Varus during the Maximian persecution. Martyr. Tortured and beheaded at Augusta Veromanduorum, Gaul (now Saint-Quentin, France); body thrown in the river, but recovered and buried by people he had helped convert.

Educated by Benedictines at Reichenau, Switzerland. Spiritual student of Saint Romuald. Benedictine monk at Einsiedeln abbey, Switzerland in 964. Teacher; director of the abbey school. Abbey prior in 970. Evangelized the Magyars in modern Hungary. Missionary to Pannonia. Priest. Bishop of Ratisbon (modern Regensberg, Germany) in 972. Reformed clerical discipline and spirituality in his diocese. Noted for his preaching, his teaching abilities, his charity (hence the name Great Almoner) and his care for lay people in his diocese. Tutor to the future emperor Saint Henry II.
