VEN. ATHANASIUS OF MT. ATHOS (1000). MARTYR ANNA AT ROME (304). MARTYR CYRILLA OF CYRENE IN LIBYA, A WIDOW . VEN. LAMPADUS, MONK, OF HIRENOPOLIS (10TH C.)

• Icon of the Mother of God "ECONOMISSA" (Stewardess)(967)
The Economissa (or Stewardess) Icon of the Most Holy Theotokos depicts the Mother of God seated on a throne, with Her Son on her left knee. St Athanasius of Mt Athos stands on her right, holding a model of the Great Lavra. On her left is St Michael of Synnada. Two angels hold a crown above her head.
The Mother of God has been considered the Stewardess of Mt Athos ever since the tenth century when the Great Lavra was being built. St Athanasius walked away from the half-built Lavra after he was abandoned by his monks because there was a shortage of food and money. He began walking toward Karyes, intending to ask for advice about whether or not to beg the emperor for the funds needed to complete the building. After about two hours, he saw a beautiful woman standing before him wearing a long blue veil.
“I know your sorrow,” she said, “and I would like to help. Where are you going?”
St Athanasius explained everything that had happened, and she asked, “Have you deserted your monastery for a morsel of bread? Go back! You will have everything you need in abundance, if you do not abandon your monastery.”
“Who are you?,” the astonished saint inquired.
“I am the Mother of your Lord,” she responded.
St Athanasius was doubtful, as he was afraid of being deceived by the Evil One. He asked Her how he could be sure that Her words were true.
“Do you see this rock?,” she asked, pointing to the side of the path. “Strike it with your staff in the name of the Holy Trinity, and you will know who is speaking to you. Do not appoint a steward at any time, for from this time forward, I shall be the Stewardess of your monastery.”
St Athanasius did as he was told, and the rock split open. A stream of water began to flow out of the crack. When he turned to face the Mother of God and to ask forgiveness for his doubts, she had disappeared. Returning to the monastery, St Athanasius found all the storerooms filled to capacity with food, wine, and oil. The building was completed, and soon the Lavra was filled with monks once again. To this day, the Lavra does not have a steward. There is, however, a monk who serves as an assistant steward to the Mother of God. The Economissa Icon rests on a throne in the narthex of the main church, and the Theotokos remains the Stewardess of the Lavra. Pilgrims venerate the Icon before entering the side chapel that contains the tomb of St Athanasius. The spring of St Athanasius still flows with healing water.

Having established a Lavra of many Monks, he departed to the Lord, though he was also a shareholder of a martyric end. Because the unbreakable one did not cease to subject himself to heavier labors, he worked to better rebuild the roof, namely the dome of the Holy Sanctuary. When the Saint went up to complete the dome, it collapsed, burying the Saint with six of his disciples.

Grand Duccess, Nun-Martyr, of Alopajevsk of Russia (1864-1918) Fndr. and Abs. of Sts Martha and Mary Convent
After the assasination of her husband Sergios in Moscow, Grand Duchess Elizabeth had a cross erected at the site of his death, bearing the inscription "Father, forgive them, for they know not what they do." After the revolution, the cross remained standing through the devotion of the people of Moscow to St Elizabeth, until it was personally torn down by Lenin.
Jacovleva, of Alopajevsk of Russia (1918)
St Barbara died with St Elizabeth on July 5, 1918, the day after the murder of Tsar Nicholas and his family. The two nuns, who had been confined at the nearby village of Alopaevsk, were thrown into a mineshaft by Soviet executioners, and grenades were tossed in after them. St Elizabeth remained alive for several hours, and could be heard singing hymns by nearby villagers who crawled up to the mineshaft after the murderers had left the area. A few days later, the bodies of St Elizabeth and St Barbara were recovered from the mineshaft after the pro-Tsarist armies took Alopaevsk. They were ultimately taken to Jerusalem in 1920, and buried in the church of St Mary Magdalene on the Mount of Olives.
• New Martyrs Grand Dukes SERGIUS Romanov (1869- 1918), Princes JOHN Constantinovich, CONSTANTINE, IGOR Constantinovich and VLADIMIR ― murdered by the Bolshevik along with several other Romanovs relatives and his personal secretary at Alapayevsk on 18 July 1918, one day after the murder of Tsar Nicholas II and his immediate family at Yekaterinburg
There exists an eyewitness account of the murders of the Romanov group in Alapayevsk, related by one of the local Bolsheviks, Vasisili Ryabov. He later recalled:
“It was night of the 17th to 18th July, 1918. When we were sure the whole town was asleep, we quietly stole through the window into the school building. Nobody there noticed our presence, they were already all asleep. We entered through the unlocked door into the building where the women were sleeping, and woke them up, telling them quietly to get dressed at once, as they were to be taken to a safe place because of the possibility of an armed attack. They obeyed silently. We tied their hands behind their backs there and then, blindfolded them, and let them out to the cart, which was already waiting by the school, sat them in it, and sent them off to their destination. After that, we went into the room occupied by the men. We told them the same story as we had told the women. The young princes Konstantinovich (KR's sons) and Prince Paley also obeyed meekly. We took them out into the corridor, blindfolded them, bound their hands behind their backs, and put them in another cart. We had earlier decided that the carts should not go together. The only one to try to oppose us was Grand Duke Sergei Mikhailovich. Physically he was stronger than the rest. We had to grapple with him. He told us categorically that he was not going anywhere, as he knew they all were going to be killed. He barricaded himself behind the cupboard and our efforts to get him out were in vain. We lost precious time. I finally lost my patience and shot at the Grand Duke. However, I only fired with the intention of wounding him slightly and frightening him into submission. I wounded him in the arm. He did not resist further. I bound his hand and covered his eyes. We put him in the last cart and set off. We were in a great hurry: already the dawn was heralding morning. Along the way, Grand Duke Sergei Mikhailovich again repeated that he knew they were all going to be killed. “ Tell me why? He asked. “ I have never been involved in politics. I loved sports, played billiards, and was interested in numismatics. “ I reassured him as best as I could. although I was very agitated myself by everything I have been through that night. Despite his wounded arm, the Grand Duke did not complain. At last, we arrived at the mine. The shaft was not very deep and as it turned out had a ledge on one side that was not covered by water.”
At shaft number 7, the deepest and longest unused mine shaft, the carriages stopped. Blindfolded, the Romanovs were ordered to walk across a log placed over the 60-foot-deep (18 m) mine. Grand Duke Sergei Mikhailovcih, the oldest man in the group, was the only one to disobey. He threw himself at the guards and they shot him to death immediately. His body was thrown into the shaft. His relatives were struck in the head and thrown into the deep shaft still alive. A couple of hand grenades were pitched in after that. The mouth of the mine was filled with dry brushwood and set it alight until there were no signs of life beneath the earth.
