• Icon of the Mother of God Panagia GALAKTOTROPHOUSA (Milk Feeder) 施乳者 of the Hilandar Monastery on Mt Athos
Σύναξις Ὑπεραγίας Θεοτόκου τῆς Γαλακτοτροφούσης
The “Milk-Giver” Icon of the Mother of God was originally located at the Lavra of St Sava the Sanctified near Jerusalem. Before his death, the holy founder of the Lavra foretold that a royal pilgrim having the same name as himself would visit the Lavra. St Sava told the brethren to give the wonderworking icon to that pilgrim as a blessing. In the thirteenth century, St Sava of Serbia visited the Lavra. As he approached the reliquary of St Sava the Sanctified, the saint’s staff fell at his feet. The brethren asked the visitor his name, and he told them he was Archbishop Sava of Serbia. Obeying the instructions of their founder, the monks gave St Sava his staff, the “Milk-Giver” Icon, and the Icon “Of the Three Hands” (celebrated on June 28 & July 12). The holy archbishop took the icon to Hilandar Monastery on Mount Athos and put it on the right side of the iconostasis in the church of St Sava at the kellion of Karyes, which is attached to Hilandar. The icon was later named Typikonissa, since the Rule (Typikon) of St Sava was preserved there.

Julius and Aaron were Roman-Britons who are said to have been put to death at Caerleon- upon-Usk in Monmouthshire, perhaps in the middle of the 3rd century. Nothing else is recorded about them. The date c. 304, during the persecution of Diocletian, commonly given to these martyrs is only a conjecture (though a very old one). It is now believed that Diocletian's decree against Christians was not enforced in Britain.

He fought against the Nestorian heresy at the Council of Ephesus. Miraculously healed from a serious illness by Saint Daniel the Stylite. May have been murdered by local heretics for his support of the Pope. Some of his writings, correspondence and hymns have survived the centuries.

We all know St Valentine’s Day, the festival of love. But how many people know that in Crete the day of love comes many months later, on July 3, the feast of Saint Hyacinth, known here as Agios Yakinthos? The day of Agios Yakinthos is not particularly promoted. What lover has given or received a gift, from a flower to a solitaire, on 3 July? Indeed, few people knew that there was a patron saint of lovers called Yakinthos until the late 1990s. Agios Yakinthos is the Orthodox Patron Saint of love, youth and loving couples, his feast day, according to the Orthodox Church, is on July 3. Agios Yakinthos became widely known in Crete in 1998 when the composer and singer "Loudovikos ton Anoyion" (Loudovikos of Anogia), founded the not-for-profit company “Agios Yakinthos” along with the inhabitants of the mountain village of Anogia, and persuaded Anthimos, the Metropolitan of Rethymnon, to build a small church in honor of Agios Yakinthos on Mount Psiloritis. The proposal was accepted by Ecumenical Patriarch Bartholomew and the church was soon built. On the feast day of Agios Yakinthos on July 3rd, various cultural events are held in Anogia each year. These are the “Yakinthia”, which are gradually becoming better known. Agios Yakinthos was originally celebrated to form the opposite pole to the completely commercialized day of love. One of the founders of the Yakinthia, the Anogian songster Loudovikos ton Anogion (photo below), says:
“...Agios Yakinthos as an ideology can be expressed in three words: the Saint of emotions, remembrance and expectation. That’s why I tell them, when you go to Agios Yakinthos, light two candles, one to remembrance and one to expectation. In this place of prayer I am bound, on the one hand, to remember a great love I have lost, but I can also, on the other hand, pray to be visited by the emotion again. So Agios Yakinthos is not the Saint of Love, but the Saint of remembered and hoped-for emotions.”

• NECTARIA (Natalia Sheremet’jeva-Dolgoruky) of Russia; Schemanun of the Kiev-Florovsky Convent (1751) buried at the entrance to the Cathedral of the Kiev-Caves Lavra
St Nectaria’s father, Count Boris Petrovich Sheremetiev, was a close friend and collaborator of Tsar Peter I. At 16, she became betrothed to a handsome man, 22 year-old Prince Ivan Alexeevich Dolgoruky, a favorite of Tsar Peter II and the brother of the Tsar’s fiancée, Princess Catherine, who showered Ivan with all kinds of favors. Natalia became acquainted with Ivan only after their betrothal, but she came to love him, as she herself wrote, for his “sincere and pure-hearted love.” In 1739 tragedy struck the family. As a result of a false denunciation, Natalia’s husband, Ivan, was taken to Novgorod where he was quartered. He died courageously, as a Christian. When they cut off his right hand he said; “I thank Thee, O Lord.” As they cut off his left leg he continued, “for Thou hast granted me,” concluding, when his left hand was severed, “to know Thee, O Lord!” In 1753 she finally retired to the Kiev-Florovsky Convent. There, at the age of 45, she was tonsured and given the name Nectaria, and in 1767, having prepared herself through monastic labors, she took the great schema. It is said that before her tonsure she threw her engagement ring into the Dnieper River.
