• OUR LADY OF THE SNOW (Dedicatio Sanctae Mariae ad Nives, Santa Maria Maggiore)
A feast that commemorates the dedication of the church of Santa Maria Maggiore on the Esquiline Hill in Rome, Italy. The church was originally built by Pope Liberius, and was known as the Basilica Liberii or Liberiana. It was restored by Pope Sixtus III, and dedicated to Our Lady. From that time on it was known as Basilica S. Mariae or Mariae Majoris. Since the seventh century it was known also as Maria ad Praesepe. The appellation ad Nives (of the snow) originated a few hundred years later, as did also the legend which gave this name to the church. The legend says that during the pontificate of Liberius, the Roman patrician John and his wife, who were without heirs, made a vow to donate their possessions to Our Lady. They prayed that she might make known to them how they were to dispose of their property in her honour. During the night of 5 August, snow fell on the summit of the Esquiline Hill. In obedience to a vision which they had the same night, the couple built a basilica in honour of Our Lady on the spot which was covered with snow. From the fact that no mention whatever is made of this alleged miracle until a few hundred years later, not even by Sixtus III in his eight-lined dedicatory inscription, it would seem that the legend has no historical basis.
• OUR LADY OF COPACABANA (La Coyeta, Virgin of Copacabana)
A statue of the Blessed Virgin Mary standing four feet tall, made of plaster and maguey fiber. Except for the face and hands, it is covered in gold leaf, dressed like an Inca princess, and has jewels on neck, hands and ears. There is no record of what the image looks like under the robes, the carved hair has been covered by a wig, and the image never leaves the basilica. It has been the recipient of many expensive gifts over the years, most of which were looted by civil authorities in need of quick cash.
There was a Christian colony in Edessa, Syria, by the 2nd century, and from there it appears the faith spread to Mesopotamia and Persia. St Addai is of the 72 original disciples sent out to spread the faith. Addai was sent by St Thomas the Apostle, who is said to have been the Apostle of India, to heal King Abgar the Black, a correspondent of Jesus' who had fallen ill. Addai stayed to evangelize, and converted Abgar and his people including St Aggai, Royal jeweler to King Abgar the Black, and St Mari. Known as one of the great apostles to Syria and Persia. St Mari became the Missionary around Nisibis, Nineveh, and along the Euphrates.

Probably born in Ireland, he became Archbishop of Rheims in France. As his Cathedral was occupied by an intruder, he went to live at the monastery of Lobbes in Belgium.

Cassian succeeded St Rheticius as bishop of Autun, France, from 314 to 350. During his long episcopacy, he became renowned as a miracle-worker. A 9th-century vita styles him as an Egyptian. His veneration spread to England, where there is a church dedicated to Cassyon at Chaddesley Corbett in Worcestershire.

Convert to Christianity. Bishop, consecrated by Pope Saint Marcellus. Very successful missionary to Trier, Germany. However, when he started smashing pagan idols, the non-converts revolted, and he had to flee to Rome for safety. When he returned to his mission in Ascoli Piceno, Italy he was martyred as part of the persecutions of Diocletian.

Daughter of Filtazius, she was raised in a Christian home. Married and converted St Gregory of Nazianzen the Elder. Mother of St Gregory Nazianzen, St Caesarius of Nazianzen, and St Gorgonia. She outlived her husband and the latter two children.
