Apostles JASON 雅颂 and SOSIPATER 索悉帕提 of the Seventy, and their companions: Martyrs SATURNINUS 萨图尔尼诺, JAKISCHOLUS (Inischolus) 雅基斯霍洛, FAUSTIANUS 法邬斯提安, JANUARIUS 雅努阿里, MARSALIUS 玛尔撒利, EUPHRASIUS 艾弗福拉西, MAMMIUS 玛穆弥 ― the holy seven former theives, the Virgin CERCYRA 凯尔基拉, and CHRISTODOLUS 赫里斯托杜洛 the Ethiopian, at Corfu (1st c.)
• Martyrs ZENO 兹诺, EUSEBIUS 艾弗塞维, NEON 奈翁 and VITALIS 维塔利 and his wife VALERIA at Ravenna and Milan (1-2nd c.) early martyrs in Milan in Italy who were converted by Apostles Jason and Sosipater
Allegedly, Valeria was the mother of SS Gervase and Protase and wife of Saint Vitalis. She is said to have been martyred in Milan; however, she appears to be a fictitious character. The casket which once contained her supposed relics is in the British Museum. In art, Saint Valeria is depicted with her sons, Gervasius and Protasius, and her husband Saint Vitalis of Milan. She may be shown being beaten with clubs for refusing to sacrifice to pagan gods. She is venerated in Milan. Vitalis, but the one who is commemorated today was reputedly a rich man who lived in Milan, Italy. He was happily married to Saint Valeria with at least two fine children, SS Gervase and Protase, whose remains were discovered and enshrined by Saint Ambrose in the 4th century. The only crime of Vitalis was that he became a Christian. Another martyr was to be executed in Ravenna and Vitalis stood by him, urging him not to lose his faith in the face of this final trial. The authorities were enraged. They stretched Vitalis on a rack and then buried him alive. His wife, too, was attacked by vicious pagans and died of her wounds just outside Milan when Marcus Aurelius was emperor. In art, Saint Vitalis is portrayed with stones in his lap, seated between his two sons, Gervasius and Protasius, who each hold a stone. He may also be shown (1) buried alive in a pit; (2) stoned; (3) with a whirlbat; or (4) as a young layman with two sons.

Their names were Theognis, Rufus, Antipater, Theostoichus, Artemas, Magnus, Theodotus, Thaumasilas and Philemon. During the reign of the Emperor Constantine a church was built in Cyzicus in their honor, and their incorrupt relics were deposited there.

Born wealthy. Fluent in Greek and Russian, he read heavily in all sacred works, and was later known as a Bible scholar. When he was grown, he renounced his inheritance, and became a monk in the Turov Borisoglebsk monastery. Preached discipline and obedience to his brother monks. Cyril wrote about the monastic life, and some of his works have survived the centuries. Believing that even the monastic life was too distracting, he became a hermit on a pillar. His simple life, scholarly background, and reputation of sanctity drew many would-be followers. Bishop of Turov. Correspondent with and counselor to prince Andrei Bogoliubsky on spiritual matters and relations between the Church and state. An exponent of Greek tradition on Russian soil. Renowned orator and preacher, usually on the Passion and Resurrection. He spent his later years writing on spiritual matters.

• Translation (425) of Relics of Martyr soldier FLORIAN of Lauriacum, today Lorch in Austria (304) a Christian holy man, and the patron saint of Linz, Austria; chimney sweeps; soapmakers, and firefighters
Florian was born about 250 A.D. in Cetium (now in Austria). He joined the Roman army and advanced in the ranks. However, the Emperor Diocletian was shocked to learn that Florian did not carry out his orders to persecute all Christians in the area, and, thus, was sentenced to death by fire. Standing on the funeral pyre, Florian is reputed to have challenged the Roman soldiers to light the fire, saying "If you do, I will climb to heaven on the flames." Apprehensive to his words, instead of burning Florian, they drowned him. His body was later retrieved by Christians and buried at an Augustinian monastery near Lorch. Saint Florian was adopted as patron saint of Poland after Pope Lucius III consented to the request of King Casimir to send relics of Florian to that country. Soon after, a person was saved from a fire by invoking Saint Florian's name. Since then, Florian has been invoked against fire and has generally been regarded in most countries as the patron saint of the fire service.

• Translation (836) of Relics of Hieromartyr Sainted LAMBERT Bishop of Maastricht (705)
Bishop, martyr, and patron of St Willibrord's missions. He was the son of a noble family of Maastricht, Flanders, Belgium, educated by St Theodard and succeeding him as bishop of Tongres-Maastricht in 668 when Theodard was murdered. He was driven from his see by Ebroin, the tyrannical mayor of the royal palace, and lived as a Benedictine in Stavelot until 681, when he was reinstated. When Lambert denounced the Mayor of the Palace Pepin of Heristal for adultery, he was murdered in Liege, Belgium. Although Lambert was buried at Maastricht, his successor as bishop, Hubertus, translated his relics to Liège, to which the see of Maastricht was eventually moved. To enshrine Lambert's relics, Hubertus, built a basilica near Lambert's residence which became the true nucleus of the city. The shrine became St Lambert's Cathedral, destroyed in 1794. Its site is the modern Place Saint-Lambert. Lambert's tomb is now located in the present Liège Cathedral. The Cathedral of Our Lady and St Lambert in Liege was built in his honor.
• Translation (836) of Relics of Sainted LIBORIUS Bishop of Le Mans (397)
He was a Gaul, influenced by Latin culture. He is said to have been Bishop of Le Mans for 49 years. He built some churches in its neighbourhood, an indication that his missionary activity was limited to the Gaul of his time. He is said to have ordained, in the course of 96 ordinations, 217 priests and 186 deacons. Saint Martin of Tours assisted him when he was dying. He was buried in the Apostle Basilica of Le Mans, beside his predecessor, Julian, the founder of the bishopric. Miracles are said to have occurred at his tomb. In 835 Bishop Aldrich placed some relics of his body into an altar in the cathedral, and in the following year, on the instructions of Emperor Louis the Pious, sent the body to Bishop Badurad of Paderborn, a diocese founded in 799 by Pope Leo III and Emperor Charlemagne that had no saint of its own. From this arose a "love bond of lasting brotherhood" that has survived all the hostilities of the succeeding centuries and is considered to be the oldest contract still in force. Both churches bound themselves to help each other by prayer and material assistance, as they have in fact done on more than one occasion.

Saint Memnon the Wonderworker from his youth lived in the Egyptian desert. By his arduous ascetical efforts, he attained a victory of spirit over the flesh. As Igumen of one of the Egyptian monasteries, he wisely and carefully guided the brethren. Even while aiding them through prayer and counsel, the saint did not waver in his efforts in the struggle against temptation. He received the gift of clairvoyance through unceasing prayer and toil. At his prayer a spring of water gushed forth in the wilderness, locusts destroying the harvest perished, and the shipwrecked who called on his name were saved. After his death, the mere mention of his name dispelled a plague of locusts and undid the cunning wiles of evil spirits.

• The Miracle at Carthage (610-641)
During the reign of Emperor Heraclius (610-641), when the Exarch of Africa was the patrician Niketas, a strange miracle took place there. In Carthage there lived a man named Tounezi who was a soldier, and when the city fell under an epidemic, he departed with his spouse. They went to their home in the country, where they resided so as not to become ill. But the envious and murderous devil lured this man into sin and led him to commit adultery with the wife of his farmer, who cultivated the land. He then fell ill with a hernia and died. Three hours after being buried, however, he began to shout from his grave, saying: "Have mercy on me, have mercy on me!" Having opened the grave, they found him alive, yet he was unable to speak. The Patriarch of Alexandria, Thalassios, strengthened him with words of comfort. Three days passed when this man began to speak, and he narrated the following: "The moment when my soul was coming out of my body, I saw demons, like Ethiopians, who stood next to me, and they had a gaze that caused terror and horror. Then I saw two Angels in the form of beautiful young people who approached me and with their presence my soul rejoiced.* The Angels took me with them, and ascended into heaven. Then the demons of the toll-houses in the air examined my every sin. Specifically, one demon examined my falsehood, another envy and another greed. To these sins that were examined by the demons, the Angels responded with my good deeds. Once we arrived at the gate of heaven, devils of another toll-house met me who examined the sin of fornication and they revealed the adultery I had committed a few days prior. The demons of the toll-house of fornication defeated me and pulled me into the bowels of the earth, where the souls of the unrepentant are damned. And what happens there cannot be described with human language. While I lamented for having reached this point, the two Angels appeared, to whom I cried out saying: 'Take pity on me and help me to repent.' They then took me and put me in my grave. There I found my body like mud and muck and did not want to enter it. But they told me it was not possible for me to repent any other way, unless I did so in my body, with which I committed my sin. Therefore I entered my body, and once my soul was again united with it, I began to yell." These things this soldier narrated and, having lived without food or drink for forty days, while weeping and lamenting for his sins, he died.**
* According to St. Nikodemos the Hagiorite, these two Angels were perhaps the Holy Archangels Michael and Gabriel, who have appeared with similar features as this story narrates.
** This narration comes from the Questions and Answers (Q. 89) of St Anastasios of Sinai. He further records that when the people heard this narration, the people were greatly benefited. And being filled with fear, they lamented of their own sins. They would see the man weeping and not eating, and they would beg him to eat, but he adamantly refused. He would furthermore go to the churches, and falling down to the ground, he would cry out with a loud voice and many tears, saying: "Woe, woe to those who sin and do not repent! Oh, what a fearful hell and exact judgement awaits them!" In this way this man spent his forty days, fasting, praying, weeping and preaching. Many people repented of their sins because of this man, and he reposed in the Lord after it was revealed to him twelve days beforehand the day he was to pass away. This narration is placed in the Synaxarion to be read on April 28th for the benefit of all.

In the Name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit.
O God, be merciful to me, a sinner.
O Lord Jesus Christ, Son of God,
for the sake of the prayers
of Thy most pure Mother,
our holy and God-bearing fathers and all the saints, have mercy on us.
Amen.

Blessed be God.
