• Icon of the Most Holy Theotokos "INEXHAUSTIBLE CHALICE" (1878) 不竭之杯
Σύναξις Ὑπεραγίας Θεοτόκου ἐν Σιέρπουχωφ Ρωσίας
The “Inexhaustible Chalice” Icon of the Most Holy Theotokos was revealed in Russia in 1878. A retired soldier from Tula had spent his pension on alcohol, ruining his health. Though he was no longer able to walk, he continued to drink. One night a holy Elder appeared to him in a dream and told him to go to the Serpukhov monastery of the Mother of God. “Have a Molieben served before her Icon “The Inexhaustible Chalice.” Since he had no money and could not walk, the man paid no attention to the dream. Then the Elder appeared a second and third time, speaking to him with increasing severity. Crawling on all fours, the man reached the next village and stayed in the home of an old woman. She rubbed his legs, and he began to feel better. The next day, he resumed his journey with two canes, then with one, until he arrived at the monastery. He described his dreams to the monks, but none of them had ever heard of “The Inexhaustible Chalice” Icon. Finally, one of them remembered an icon on which a chalice was depicted. On the back of the icon was an inscription, “The Inexhaustible Chaice.” After the Molieben, the peasant returned home restored to health, and cured of his alcoholism. News of the miracle spread, and many alcoholics and their families came to pray before the Icon. Many of them came back to thank the Mother of God for answering their prayers. Every Sunday in the Serpukhov-Vyotsk monastery a Molieben with an Akathist is served before the Icon for those who are addicted to alcohol.

• New Hieromartyr PLATON of Banja Luka (1941) the 3rd Serbian Orthodox bishop of Banja Luka
Ὁ Ἅγιος Πλάτων ὁ Ἱερομάρτυρας Ἐπίσκοπος Ἀχρίδος
The territory of his diocese became part of so-called Independent State of Croatia. Since he was a Serb born in Serbia, not in Bosnia, he was told to leave Banja Luka. He wrote back: "The authorities appointed me Bishop of Banja Luka lawfully, according to canon law; having such a position I took the obligation before God, Church, and people, that inseparably binding my life and my destiny with the life and destiny of my spiritual flock, to take care of my spiritual flock permanently and firmly, regardless of any events, and to stay on its spiritual path all the time of my life given to me by God, persevering in my staying with the flock as a good shepherd who gives his soul for his sheep…" He asked a Roman Catholic bishop, Dr Jozo Garić (who was a Croat like Ustašas) to intervene with the authorized military officer and let him stay for two or three days more so that he could prepare for the departure. This Bishop told him to be calm and peaceful. However, the Ustaše arrested Bishop Platon the very next night, May 5, 1941, and took him, together with priest Dušan Subotić, who was hierarchal administrator from Bosanska Gradiska, somewhere out of Banja Luka. The two of them were killed there and their corpses were cast into the Vrbanja River. Ustasa Asim Celic committed this repulsive deed. The bishop's corpse, which was scarred and disfigured, was found in the village of Kumsale, on May 23, 1941. He was buried in a military graveyard in Banja Luka. Then in 1973, his remains were transported to the Banja Luka Cathedral for reburial.

• Conversion of St AUGUSTINE of Hippo (354-430)
Son of a pagan father who converted on his death bed, and of Saint Monica, a devout Christian. Raised a Christian, he lost his faith in youth and led a wild life. Lived with a Carthaginian woman from the age of 15 through 30. Fathered a son whom he named Adeotadus, which means the gift of God. Taught rhetoric at Carthage and Milan, Italy. After investigating and experimenting with several philosophies, he became a Manichaean for several years; it taught of a great struggle between good and evil, and featured a lax moral code. A summation of his thinking at the time comes from his Confessions: "God, give me chastity and continence - but not just now." Augustine finally broke with the Manichaeans and was converted by the prayers of his mother and the help of Saint Ambrose of Milan, who baptized him. On the death of his mother he returned to Africa, sold his property, gave the proceeds to the poor, and founded a monastery. Monk. Priest. Preacher. Bishop of Hippo in 396. Founded religious communities. Fought Manichaeism, Donatism, Pelagianism and other heresies. Oversaw his church and his see during the fall of the Roman Empire to the Vandals. Doctor of the Church. His later thinking can also be summed up in a line from his writings: Our hearts were made for You, O Lord, and they are restless until they rest in you.

Hilary was an exuberant bishop, working so hard to spread the faith that he caused problems with the people and the civil authorities, and twice had to be reproved by the Vatican - his zealousness was causing more trouble than converts. But though some questioned his methods, none questions his sanctity or his true belief.

• MARTHA of Monemvasia, Abbess of the Most Holy Theotokos Monastery
The life of Saint Martha, Abbess of the Monastery of the Most Holy Theotokos in Monemvasia, situated below the Church of the Hodegetria, was written for us by Bishop Paul of Monemvasia in the 10th century. She was a very virtuous woman who suffered from a hemorrhage. For this reason she lived in the upper gallery of the church of the monastery. One day a certain elder monk came to see her at the monastery. He was sent up to Martha in the upper gallery and asked her for one of her garments. She told him that she had only two garments due to her hemorrhage, one that she she wore while the other was in the laundry needing to be washed from the flow of blood. Nonetheless, due to her good nature, Martha gave the old man her washed garment. With this, the old man gratefully departed. However, as soon as the old man left, Martha noticed that her hemorrhage had ceased. Recognizing this to be a miracle, she sent a few nuns to go and get the old monk, but he was nowhere to be found. On the very day and at the very hour in which the old monk had visited Martha in Monemvasia, suddenly he appeared in Thessaloniki at the home of natives of Monemvasia. When the old monk asked them if they knew Martha the abbess from the lower Monastery of the Most Holy Theotokos in Monemvasia, they responded that indeed they knew her, and in fact they were related to her. He showed and gave them her garment and sent a message with them for her when they were to return to Monemvasia, saying: "Many things await you." Having said this, he disappeared, to their astonishment. The natives of Monemvasia then noted the day and time of this meeting, and when they returned to Monemvasia they relayed the message of the old monk to Martha. When Martha learned from her relatives of their wondrous meeting with the old monk at the very day and hour she had met him and was healed of her hemorrhage, they were all amazed and glorified God. They also surmised that the old monk was none other than Saint John the Theologian and Evangelist. Martha also once saw the Mother of God from the gallery of the church while the nuns were chanting Matins for the Dormition of the Theotokos. She was sitting enthroned in the sanctuary, while Martha wept continuous tears. This vision lasted until the doxology at the end of Matins, when the sisters began to sing too loudly, for which the Theotokos disappeared. At this, Martha cried out: "What have you done?" When the nuns asked her why she screamed, Martha told them of the vision she had, and from that time forth ordered the nuns to chant the doxology more quietly and with a contrite heart.

• 15 Year Old Virgyn Martyress at Alexandria (3-4th c.)
Saint Romanos the Melodist was appointed as a deacon in this church of the Kyrou district, though he was initially completely unrefined and unpleasant in his voice and in the singing of hymns. For this he was mocked by many, despite being esteemed for his virtues. Distressed by this, Romanos, after a Christmas Eve vigil at Blachernae, went to the Church of the Most Holy Theotokos in Kyrou, and begged the Theotokos before her miraculous icon to grant him the gift of melody. Falling asleep near the ambon, at around midnight he beheld the Theotokos holding a scroll, which she gave to him to eat. Having consumed it, he received his desired gift, and ascending the ambon, sang the kontakion "Today the Virgin". Later he went on and became the composer of over a thousand kontakia. This district in Constantinople, where the Church of the Theotokos was built, was called "Kyrou" stems from one of Byzantium's most noted philanthropists and builders, Cyrus of Panapolis (Kyros is Cyrus in Greek), who was a Roman official during the reign of Emperor Theodosius II (408–450). Before the church was built, a pious person hid an icon of the Theotokos in a cypress tree. Later, in a miraculous manner, the light of a lamp would shine from this cypress. Cyrus reposed in 457, a century before Romanos the Melodist who reposed in 556; it is believed this church also contained relics of Saint Romanos. In other sources we find that the icon of the Theotokos in Kyrou, which was also known as Panagia Kyriotissa, was the source of many miracles and was one of the few shrines in Constantinople, renowned for its relics, that pilgrims flocked to especially to venerate a miraculous icon. And among the miracles of Saint Artemios there is the incident of an ailing child who was cured in the Church of the Theotokos in Kyrou, and when Saint Artemios appeared to the mother he said: "Christ our God, born of the Theotokos, this very One heals you."
In the Name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit.
O God, be merciful to me, a sinner.
愿上帝怜恤我罪人
O Lord Jesus Christ, Son of God,
for the sake of the prayers
of Thy most pure Mother,
our holy and God-bearing fathers and all the saints, have mercy on us.
Amen.
