• Commemoration of the healing of blinded Stephen by the Icon of the Most Holy Theotokos of Panagia of KASSOPITRA 卡西奥彼亚 in Kerkyra (1530)

In 1530 a young peasant named Stephen went to the city of Kerkyra for certain business that he had there. There he met other young men from the countryside whom he knew, and they decided to return home together. On the way they met other young people who were bringing flour from the mill to their homes. The companions of Stephen decided to forcibly take this flour, and urged Stephen to participate in the theft. Stephen not only refused to participate in this evil act, but urged the others to abandon their plan as well. Despite this the theft took place and the one who was punished was the innocent Stephen. This was because the victims lodged a complaint to the authorities, and the perpetrators went into hiding while Stephen did not hide, having not committed the crime. For this reason he walked freely back to the city one day and they arrested him. He was brought before Symeon Leone who ordered that either his hand be cut off or his eyes removed for the crime, leaving to innocent Stephen the choice; he chose the second. Now blind, Stephen was led by his mother to the Church of Saint Lazarus to beg for mercy. Yet in the city Stephen encountered derision, so they decided to go away from the city and arrived in Kassiopi. Arriving at the Monastery of the Theotokos, there they asked the guardian monk for hospitality. The monk allowed them to stay the night in the church. During the night, while Stephen was numb from the pain, he felt someone pushing his eyes hard, and he awoke screaming. He then saw a woman bright beyond measure, who then disappeared immediately. He then woke up his mother to tell her of his vision, and revealed to her that he could now see. Hearing the cries of Stephen, the monk ran to the church. Amazed, the monk went to the city and proclaimed the miracle. Symeon Leone himself went to the Monastery to see the miracle, and upon seeing Stephen's new eyes and the scars from the heated iron that had previously removed them, he begged for forgiveness for his unjust punishment. It should also be noted that before the miracle the eyes of Stephen were brown, but after they became blue, and he would show his brown eyes which were contained in liquid to prove he had a new pair of eyes.

It is usually clothed with a white robe and sky blue cloak, the colors of the Argentinian flag. Only the dark oval face with big blue eyes and the hands folded in prayer are now visible. radition says that an ox-drawn wagon was taking the statue from Buenos Aires to Santiago del Estero. The animals stopped at the Luján River and refused to cross. Through trial and error the teamsters discovered that it the box with the Virgin was in the wagon, the oxen would not move; if it was removed, then away they went. After testing this several times, the people realized that Our Lady wanted to stay in Luján.

WIRO Bishop of Utrecht in Holland and one of the Apostles of Frisia (753), PLECHELM and deacon OTGER (746) worked with S Wiro of Utrecht to found a monastery at Odilienburg, Netherlands
Born in England, Wiro reposed in c 753. He became Bishop of Utrecht in Holland and is one of the Apostles of Frisia. He and his two companions founded a monastery at Odilienburg. Wiro was a holy Irish bishop, who travelled to Rome with St Plechelm, and the deacon Otger. He afterwards preached the faith of Christ to the Pagans in the low-countries. Prince Pepin of Herstal was a great admirer of his sanctity, and bestowed on him a lonely wood, called the Mount of St Peter, now of St Odilia, near the river Roer, one league from Ruremund; and repaired to him often bare-foot to confess his sins. Broken by austerities and old age, he departed to our Lord in the seventh century.

He is one of the original and most honored Desert Fathers. Born of a noble family, he was a deacon and a courtier in Constantinople. One day he heard a voice saying "Arsenios, flee from men, and thou shalt be saved." He left the capital in secret and sailed to Alexandria, then journeyed to Skete in the Egyptian desert, where he became a monk. For years he was the disciple of St John the Dwarf. Even though he had already abandoned the world so dramatically, after some time in the desert he again heard a voice saying, "Arsenios, flee, be silent, pray always, for these are the causes of sinning not." He then separated himself from his brother monks and lived as a hermit, practicing silence. It was told of him that, on Saturday evenings, he would stand, turn his back to the setting sun, raise his hands in prayer, and pray without sitting down until the sun shone on his face the following morning. A monk who came to visit him looked into his cell and saw Arsenios at prayer, his entire body glowing like a flame. He reposed in peace at the age of ninety-five.

Saint Arsenius the Lover of Labor lived during the fourteenth century. This ascetic was distinguished by his love for toil, and living in asceticism in the Kiev Caves monastery of the Dormition of the Most Holy Theotokos, he knew no rest. He prayed constantly and partook of food only at the setting of the sun. For his humility and love of labor the Lord gave him the gift of wonderworking. His memory is also celebrated together with the Saints of the Far Caves on August 28.

The Monk Arsenii of Novgorod reposed in the year 1570 (the account about him is located under 12 July ― the day of his repose). The celebration was established on 8 May in connection with the transfer of his relics in 1785, and with the "Saints-name-in-common" ("tezoimenitstvo") of this day.

His was a pious family; his parents turned their home into a hospital, and his brothers, Deodato and Didier, died as a martyrs. Desideratus was a courtier and advisor to king Clotaire. Fought simony and heresy. He wished to retire to life as a monk, but was chosen to serve as bishop of Bourges, France in 541. Attended the 5th Council of Orleans in 549, and the 2nd Council of Auvergne. Fought against Nestorianism.

Saint Dionysius is said to have been one of the ten missionaries sent into Gaul with Saint Peregrinus by Pope Sixtus I in the early 2nd century. He succeeded Saint Justus as bishop of Vienne in the Dauphiné.

She bore nine children, and imparted her Christian faith so effectively that five of them are counted as Saints of the Church: Basil the Great, Gregory of Nyssa, Peter of Sebaste, Macrina and Theosevia. In her old age she founded a monastery, and lived in it with her daughter Macrina until her repose.
EUPRAXIA Abbess of Pskov Monastery (1243)
• Venerable GIBRIAN (Gibrianus) Priest in Champagne, France (515)
The Irish hermit Saint Gibrian was the eldest of nine (or eight) siblings, all of whom migrated to Brittany where they became saints. They include his brothers Tressan (Trasain, a priest), Helan(us) (priest), Germanus, Abran (seems to be Gibrian himself), Petran, and sisters Franca, Promptia, Possenna. He left Ireland in quest of a retreat, and led many years a penitential contemplative life, in a poor cell which he built near the river Marne, in the territory of Challons, where he assembled a small community of fervent servants of God, and another at some distance of holy virgins. Gibrian laboured near Rheims and was buried at a place now called after him Saint Gibrian. He died very old, in the eighth century. Many miraculous cures of sick persons at his tomb, and by his intercession, gave occasion to a chapel being built over his tomb. By an order of Fulk, archbishop of Rheims, his body was translated thither about the year 890. His relics were translated to the basilica of Saint Remigius in Rheims and deposited there in the great church of the abbey of St Remigius.

IDUBERGA (Ita, Idaberga, Ida or Itta) 伊杜贝尔伽 Matr., W., Nun, Fndr. of convent at Nivelles (Nijvel) in Brabant (652) a widow, she became a nun at Nivelles in Belgium under her daughter, St Gertrude; she is invoked against toothache and erysipelas
St Ida was born around 600 and was a daughter of the Duke of Aquitania in southwest France. Her brother was the Bishop of Trier. She was married to Pepin of Landen, with whom she had several children. Upon her husband's death in 640, Ida founded the famous convent at Nivelles in Belgium, along with her daughter St Gertrude. St Ida fell asleep in the Lord on May 8, 652.
Holy Apostle and Evangelist JOHN 约安 the Theologian (98-117) the "beloved disciple" of the Lord

The Apostle reposed when he was more than one hundred years old; he was the only one of the Apostles not to die a martyr. Knowing that his death approached, he took seven of his disciples and told them to dig a grave in the form of a cross. He then lay down in the grave and died, and was buried by his disciples. When the faithful later opened his grave, they found it to be empty. But on this date every year a fine powder, called manna by the people, poured forth from the grave, and was used by the faithful for healing of ailments of body and soul. On the island of Patmos where St John wrote the Book of Revelation, there is enshrined the Kozak martyr, St Pachomius.

MARTIN of Saujon (6th c.) priest, monk and abbot in Saujon, Saintes, France
METRONE (Metro, Metron, Metronius) of Verona (8th c.) penitent who chained himself to a stone in front of the cathedral of Verona, Italy, threw the key into Adige River, and lived there on the street for seven years in penance. The key to his chains was found in the belly of a fish by two fishermen who took the key to the local bishop. The bishop took the return to the key as a sign, freed Metrone from his chains, and welcomed him to active Communion in the Church

ODRIAN Bishop and Tutelar Saint of Waterford in Ireland (563) Abbot at Meath, Ireland. Friend of Saint Columba and travelled with him to Scotland to become a monk at Iona Abbey
This rich and famous city was subject to the bishop of Lismore, (which see was founded by St Carthag, in 631,) till the Ostmen being settled here, they procured a bishop for Waterford. Malchus, a monk of Winchester, was consecrated first bishop of Waterford by St Anselm, at Canterbury, in 1096. For the sees of Dublin, Limerick, and Waterford were subjected to the metropolitan of Canterbury during the eleventh and twelfth centuries, whilst the Ostmen were masters in those cities. The sees of Waterford and Lismore have been united since the year 1363.

Saint Pimen, Faster of the Caves, won fame by his exploit of fasting. The relics of the saint rest in the Far Caves. He is also commemorated on August 28.
TARASIUS of Lycaonia, miracle worker
VICTOR the Moor, Martyr at Milan (303) a soldier from Mauritania in North Africa, martyred in Milan in Italy under Maximian
St Ambrose speaks of him, and St Gregory of Tours mentions his tomb famed for miracles. Soldier in the Roman Praetorian Guard. A Christian from his youth, Victor lived in quiet praise of God. He served in the armies of Maximian, and by his order was tortured on the rack, and at length beheaded at Milan, in 303. He was tortured for his faith, basted in molten lead, and killed. His celebrated church at Milan, is now in the hands of the Olivetan monks, by whom it was rebuilt in a most sumptuous manner and in a finished taste, when St Charles performed the dedication of it, and the solemn translation of the martyr's relics.

• The Apparition of St MICHAEL the Archangel on Mount Gargano near Manfredonia in southern Italy, to Bishop Laurence of Siponto (490) in memory of which the famous Monastery of the Archangel (Sanctuary of Monte Sant'Angelo) was founded
It is manifest, from the Holy Scriptures, that God is pleased to make frequent use of the ministry of the heavenly spirits in the dispensations of His providence in this world, and especially towards man. Hence the name of Angel (which is not properly a denomination of nature, but office) has been appropriated to them. The angels are ll pure spirits; they are, by a property of their nature, immortal, as every spirit is. They have the power of moving or conveying themselves from place to place, and such is their activity that it is not easy for us to conceive it. Among the holy archangels, there are particularly distinguished in Holy Writ Sts Michael, Gabriel, and Raphael. St Michael, whom the Church honors this day, was the prince of the faithful angels who opposed Lucifer and his associates in their revolt against Gad. As the devil is the sworn enemy of God's holy Church, St Michael is its special protector against his assaults and stratagems. This holy archangel has ever been honored in the Christian Church as her guardian under God, and as the protector of the faithful; for God is pleased to employ the zeal and charity of the good angels and their leader against the malice of the devil. To thank His adorable goodness for this benefit of His merciful providence is this festival instituted by the Church in honor of the good angels, in which devotion she has been encouraged by several apparitions of this glorious archangel. Among others, it is recorded that St Michael, in a vision, admonished the Bishop of Siponto(commemorated February 7) to build a church in his honor on Mount Gargano, near Manfredonia, in the kingdom of Naples. When the Emperor Otho III. had, contrary to his word, put to death, for rebellion, Crescentius, a Roman senator, being touched with remorse he cast himself at the feet of St Romuald, who, in satisfaction for his crime, enjoined him to walk barefoot, on a penitential pilgrimage, to St Michael's on Mount Gargano, which penance he performed in 1002. It is mentioned in particular of this special guardian and protector of the Church that, in the persecution of Antichrist, he will powerfully stand up in her defence: "At that time shall Michael rise up, the great prince, who standeth for the children of thy people." St Michael is not only the protector of the Church, but of every faithful soul. He defeated the devil by humility: we are enlisted in the same warfare. His arms were humility and ardent love of God: the same must be our weapons. We ought to regard this archangel as our leader under God: and, courageously resisting the devil in all his assaults, to cry out, Who can be compared to God?
