• The CHUKHLOMA "TENDERNESS" Icon of the Mother of God of GALICH (1350) // MAY 28 // JUL 4 // JUL 20 // AUG 15 //
The Chukhloma Icon of the Mother of God of Galich appeared in 1350 to St Abraham of Galich, who came from the north to live an ascetic life with the blessing of St Sergius of Radonezh. On the shores of Galich Lake which was hidden in a dense forest, he turned with prayer to the Mother of God, asking Her blessing. After finishing his prayers, he sat down to rest, but suddenly a bright light appeared on a nearby mountain and a voice said, “Abraham, come up the mountain, where there is an icon of My Mother.” The monk went up the mountain where the light shone, and indeed found an icon of the Mother of God with the Infant on a tree. With tenderness and in gratitude to God, he took the icon and, strengthened by prayers to the Most Holy Theotokos, built a chapel there in which he placed the icon. Galich Prince Demetrius Feodorovich learned about St Abraham’s trip, and asked him to bring the icon to him. St Abraham journeyed across Galich Lake in a boat and, accompanied by clergy and a throng of people, took the wonderworking icon to the cathedral church in the city of Galich. A large number of sick were healed by this icon. When St Abraham told Prince Demetrius about the appearance of the icon, the Prince gave St Abraham money to build a monastery. Soon, a church was built in honor of the Dormition of the Most Holy Theotokos, around which a monastery grew. St Abraham founded several more monasteries, the last being the Chukhloma, not far from the city of Chukhloma. From the name of this monastery, the wonderworking icon became known as the Chukhloma Icon of Galich.
• "OF SIGN" of ABALATSK (1637) Icon of the Mother of God // NOV 27 //
The Abalatsk Znamenie-sign Icon of the Mother of God was written by a proto-deacon of the Tobol'sk cathedral, Matfei, in honour of Sophia the Wisdom of God, in the fulfilling of a vow by a paralytic peasant Evphymii towards the rebuilding anew at the Abalatsk monastery the church of the Znamenie-Sign of the Mother of God. This church was built in 1637 after the recurrent miraculous appearances of the Znamenie Mother of God, accompanied by Saint Nicholas and the Nun Mary of Egypt, appearing to the pious widow Maria. With the writing of the temple's Znamenie-Sign Icon, the paralytic Evphymii was completely healed. And during the time of the solemn transfer of the icon to the Abalatsk temple many healings occurred. In general appearance the Abalatsk Icon is similar with that of the Novgorod Znamenie Icon, but with this distinction, that on the Abalatsk Icon Saint Nicholas and the Nun Mary of Egypt stand before the MostHoly Mother of God. Many a wonderworking copy of the Abalatsk Icon is known of, reverently venerated throughout all Siberia.

Mother Maria was born in Latvia in 1891. Like many of the pre-Revolutionary Russian intelligenstia, she was an atheist and a political radical in her youth, but gradually came to accept the truths of the Faith. After the Revolution, she became part of the large Russian emigre population of Paris. There she was tonsured as a nun by Metropolitan Evlogy, and devoted herself to a life of service to the poor. With a small community of fellow-believers, she established 'houses of hospitality' for the poor, the homeless, the alcoholic, and visited Russian emigres in mental hospitals. In 1939 Metropolitan Evlogy sent the young priest Fr Dimitry to serve Mother Maria's community; he proved to be a partner, committed even unto death, in the community's work among the poor. When the Nazis took Paris in 1940, Mother Maria, Fr Dimitry, and others of the community chose to remain in the city to care for those who had come to count on them. As Nazi persecution of Jews in France increased, the Orthodox community's work naturally expanded to include protection and care of these most helpless ones. Father Dimitri was asked to provide forged certificates of baptism to preserve the lives of Jews, and always complied. Eventually, this work led to the arrest of Mother Maria, Fr Dimitri, and their associates.

During the persecutions of Diocletian, governor Hadrian sent troops to bring in Paphnutius; the hermit heard they were coming, went to the governor on his own, and made a public profession of Christianity. He was imprisoned and tortured to get him to give up his faith; he faith was so strong that he converted forty fellow prisoners (who were burned to death) and two of his torturers, Dionysius and Callimachus (who were beheaded). Released, Paphnutius was taken in by a local Christian name Nestorius, and spent his day preaching and teaching to the man’s family and anyone else who would listen; at least 546 people were brought to the faith, all of whom were later martyred. Hadrian finally sent the troublesome hermit to Diocletian whose forces finally killed him.
