In the Orthodox Church the term "Venerable" is commonly used as the English-language translation of the title given to monastic saints (Greek: Hosios, Church Slavonic: Prepodobni; both Greek and Church Slavonic forms are masculinum). A monastic saint who was martyred for the Orthodox faith is referred to as "Venerable Martyr". In the 20th century, some English-language Orthodox sources began to use the term "Venerable" to refer to a righteous person who was a candidate for glorification (canonization), most famously in the case of Saint John of Shanghai and San Francisco; however, this has not altered the original usage of this term in reference to monastic saints.

King of Kent and High King of England, he protected St Augustine's mission and may have been baptised by him as early as Pentecost 597. Though he never tried to force his subjects into Christianity, thousands followed his apostolic example.

可敬的埃拉斯默

He acquired a legacy of fame in that everything he possessed he used for the adornment of the Pechersk church: he mounted many an icon, which even now are over the altar. But with him there occurred suchlike a temptation, that when he came to be impoverished, he then came to be disdainful. The spirit of evil then began to suggest to him: "It gaineth thee naught, that thou squandered possessions upon the church, yea better were it that thou used it on the poor". Not having made proper sense about such thoughts, Erasm went into despondency and began to live carelessly. Because of his virtue the Gracious and Merciful God saved him. He brought upon him a grievous illness. In this sickness Erasm lay numb with closed eyes for seven days, hardly breathing. On the eighth day the brethren came to him and, seeing his terrible gasping, said: "Woe, woe to the soul of this brother, squandered in idleness. It beholds thee something and rebels, not leaving the body". And here Erasm suddenly stood up, as though healthy, and said: "Fathers and brethren! I am exactly a sinner, and a sinner not having repented, as ye said, but here not have appeared to me our monastic fathers Antonii and Theodosii, and said: "We have prayed for thee, and the Lord hath given thee time for repentance. Then beheld I the All-Pure Mother of God with Christ Son of God on Her arms, and She saith to me: "Erasm, since thou did adorn My Church with icons, I likewise adorn thee in the Kingdom of my Son! Arise, repent, put on the angelic form, and on the third day I shalt take thee to Myself as one having loved the magnificence of My home". Having said this, Erasm began to confess his sins before all without shame, then went to church and was envested in the schema, and on the third day he died.
• ETHELBERT (Ædilberct, Æthelberht, Aedilberct, Aethelberht, Aibert, Albert, Edilbertus) of Kent (552-616)
Son of Eormenric; great-grandson of Hengist, Saxon conqueror of Britain. Raised as a pagan worshipper of Odin. King of Kent in 560. Defeated by Ceawlin of Wessex at the battle of Wimbledon in 568, ending his attempt to rule all of Britain. Married the Christian Bertha, daughter of Charibert, King of the Franks; they had three children, including Saint Ethelburgh of Kent. Convert to Christianity, baptized by Saint Augustine of Canterbury in 597; his example led to the baptism of 10,000 of his countrymen within a few months, and he supported Augustine in his missionary work with land, finances and influence. Issued the first written laws to the English people in 604.

After an apparition by the Precursor himself, the Precursor's venerable head was discovered in Herod's house by two pilgrim monks in Jerusalem. A potter took it from the two monks' hands and in appreciating its worth set about to honor it with a special veneration. Feeling himself close to death, he left the relic to his sister, recommending her not to move it or reveal it but only to honor it. After the woman's death, many people successively came into possession of this relic. The last one to have it was a heretical priest-monk named Eustathios. He was expelled by the orthodox from the grotto where he lived (because he indignantly exploited the cures worked through the relic for a lucrative end and attributed the cures to his Arian heresy). In accordance with Providence's designs, the Precursor's venerable head was left in his grotto. It remained hidden and unknown there until the time of Archimandrite Marcellus, under Emperors Valentinian and Marcian (450-457) and Uranius, the Bishop of Emesa. At this time, after several celestial manifestations took place concerning this relic, it was rediscovered in an urn and carried into the church by Bishop Uranius where it worked many miracles and healings.

Of Calabrian parentage, he was born in Sicily, where his mother had been taken as a slave by the Saracens. He managed to escape to Calabria while still a child and there became a monk. Theristos, meaning harvester, refers to a miraculous harvest reaped by the saint.

• Holy Apostle MATTHIAS (63)
St Peter having, in a general assembly of the faithful held soon after, declared from holy scripture, the necessity of choosing a twelfth apostle, in the room of Judas; two were unanimously pitched upon by the assembly, as most worthy of the dignity Joseph, called Barsabas, and, on account of his extraordinary piety, surnamed the Just, and Matthias. After devout prayer to God, that he would direct them in their choice, they proceeded in it by way of lot, which falling by divine direction on Matthias, he was accordingly associated with the eleven, and ranked among the apostles.

• Hieromartyr PRAETEXTATUS (Prix) Archbishop of Rouen in France (586)
Bishop of Rouen, France from 549, a position he held for 35 years. Because of his involvement in political intrigue, the French king had him brought before a court of bishops on a charge of fomenting rebellion. Praetextatus denied the charges, but agreed to exile for several years instead of execution. He was formally reinstalled as bishop by the Council of Macon. Praetextatus continued correcting the queen and preaching against the evil practices of her regime, encouraging the monarch to set a holy example. Instead, she had him assassinated.

• Hosiosmartyr SERGIUS of Cappadocia (304)
Monk in Caesarea, Cappadocia. May have been a priest; records are unclear. He was one of a group of Christians assembled and ordered to make a sacrifice to idols during the persecutions of Diocletian; when the sacrificial fire went out, Sergius immediately claimed it was the work of the true God. He was immediately "tried" and executed by order of the local governor.
