HOLY APOSTLES BARTHOLOMEW AND BARNABAS (1ST C.)
2nd Week after Pentecost. The beginning of the Apostolic Fast of Sts Peter and Paul
Beginning of APOSTLES' (Peter & Paul) FAST // 2019 //
The Orthodox Church has four main fasting periods. They are: the Nativity Fast before Christmas, Great Lent before Pascha, the Dormition of the Mother of God fast before the feast of the Dormition on August 15th and the Apostle's Fast from the Monday after All Saints Sunday until the feast of Ss Peter and Paul on June 29th. This fast can be longer or shorter depending on when Pascha falls. Tradition tells us that the apostles undertook this fast in order to prepare themselves to go out and preach the Gospel after Christ's Ascension into heaven and the descent of the Holy Spirit at Pentecost. Some people criticize the Church's fasts, saying they are man-made rules but this is not the case. In the second chapter of Saint Mark's Gospel, when the Pharisees criticize our Lord's apostles for not fasting, Jesus says: Can the wedding guests fast while the bridegroom is with them? As long as they have the bridegroom with them, they cannot fast. The days will come, when the bridegroom is taken away from them, and then they will fast in that day (Mk 2:19-20). In other words, fasting is not appropriate when Jesus is with his apostles, but that is when our Lord returns to Heaven his disciples (including all of us) will fast. But why does Jesus want us to fast? Because it gives us spiritual strength. Once when the apostles asked our Lord why they had not been able to cast a demon out of a young boy and heal him, Jesus said: … this kind does not go out except by prayer and fasting (Mt 17:21). So fasting is important and for all of us. But we must be very careful not to fast only from certain foods and think that we are virtuous because of this. Even if we fast strictly, if our hearts are filled with judgement, lack of forgiveness, self-righteousness, grudges, etc. then our fasts are not pleasing to God. So in whatever way we fast, let our fasting come out of love for God and neighbor.
• Icon of the Most Holy Theotokos "IT IS TRULY MEET" ("Axion Estin") (982)
A monk on the Holy Mountain was chanting the ancient hymn to the Most Holy Theotokos, "More honorable than the Cherubim..." (composed by St Cosmas the Hymnographer) in his cell, when the Archangel Gabriel appeared to him, disguised as a monk. The angel chanted the same hymn, but began it differently: "It is truly meet to call thee blessed, the Theotokos, the ever-blessed and most pure and Mother of our God. More honorable than the Cherubim..." Amazed at the hymn's beauty, the monk asked the stranger to write it down for him: the Angel inscribed it on a stone tablet with his finger, then vanished from sight. The tablet was brought to Constantinople and shown to the Emperor and the Patriarch as proof of the miracle. From that time, this version of the hymn began to be sung in the Divine Liturgy, as it is to this day.
• Commemoration of the Appearance of the Archangel Gabriel to a Monk on Mt Athos and the Revelation of the Hymn "It Is Truly Meet..."
The “It is Truly Meet” Icon of the Mother of God is in the high place of the altar of the Cathedral at the Karyes Monastery on Mount Athos. During the reign of Emperors Basil and Constantine Porphyrogenitos, and the patriarchate of St Nicholas Chrysoberges in the tenth century, a certain Elder and his disciple lived near Karyes. One Saturday night, the Elder went to the Karyes Monastery for the all-night Vigil. Before leaving, he instructed his disciple to remain behind and read the service in their cell. As it grew dark, the disciple heard a knock on the door. When he opened the door, he saw an unknown monk who called himself Gabriel, and the disciple invited him to come in. They stood before the icon of the Mother of God and read the service together with reverence.
During the Ninth Ode of the Canon, the disciple began to sing “My soul magnifies the Lord…” and then recited the line, “More honorable than the Cherubim….”
The stranger began to sing the next verse, “For He has regarded the low estate of His handmaiden….,” but then began to chant something the disciple had never heard before, “It is truly meet to bless Thee, Oh Theotokos, ever-blessed and most pure, and the Mother of our God…” Then the stranger continued with, “More honorable than the Cherubim.…”
While the hymn was being sung, the Icon of the Theotokos shone with a heavenly light. The disciple was moved by the new version of the familiar hymn, and asked his guest to write the words down for him. When the stranger asked for paper and ink, the disciple said that they did not have any. The stranger took a tile from the roof and wrote the words of the hymn on its surface with his finger. The disciple knew then that this was no ordinary monk, but the Archangel Gabriel. The angel said, “Sing in this manner, and all the Orthodox as well.” Then he disappeared from the room, and the Icon of the Mother of God continued to radiate light for some time afterward. The Icon of the Mother of God, before which the hymn “It Is Truly Meet” was first sung, was transferred to the Monastery at Karyes. The tile, with the hymn written on it by the Archangel Gabriel, was taken to Constantinople when St Nicholas Chrysoberges was Patriarch. Numerous copies of the “It Is Truly Meet” Icon are revered in Russian churches. At Galerna Harbor in St Petersburg, a church with five cupolas was built in honor of the Merciful Mother of God, and a grace-bearing copy of the “It Is Truly Meet” icon sent from Athos was put into the church.

He obtained market, coinage and toll rights for the city of Bremen in 888 from Emperor Arnulf of Carinthia and thus considerable improved the financial state of the archbishopric. In 884 he personally led a Frisian army against the Vikings and, after the victorious Battle of Norditi was able to drive them permanently out of East Frisia.
