• The Most Holy Theotokos in commemoration of the "Abbess of Holy Mount Athos” icon of the Most Holy Mother of God
Commemorated at the Russian monastery on Mt. Athos. The icon is kept at St. Panteleimon’s Monastery and famous for many miracles.
From the rich depository of the Church's Sacred Tradtion, we are told that in the year A.D. 52 the Holy Virgin, accompanied by St. John the Theologian and others, set sail for Cyprus to visit Lazarus, for he had written of his great desire to see her. A storm drew the ship off course and drove it north along the Agean Sea until at length it found harbor on the northeast coast of Athos, in a cove where today the monastery of Iveron is located. Marvelling at the beauty of the place, the Holy Virgin heard a voice: "Let this place be thine inheritance and garden, a paradise and a haven of salvation for those seeking to be saved." From ancient times the Macedonian peninsula of Athos was inhabited by pagan tribes and boasted a large temple of Apollo. When the Mother of God stepped ashore, the idols in the pagan temples, constrained by a higher power, began falling over and screaming: "Men of Apollo, hasten to welcome Mary, the Mother of the great God Jesus!" The people crowded around to listen as the Holy Virgin told them of the mystery of the Incarnation, the purpose of God's coming to earth, Christ's teaching, His suffering, the glory of His Resurrection and Ascension. Many were baptized, their faith confirmed by numerous miracles wrought by the hand of the Mother of God. Leaving one of her company to shepherd the newly-enlightened people, she bid them farewell. "May the blessing of My Son and My God be upon this place and upon all those who dwell here with faith and piety, keeping His commandments." It is recorded in the Life of St. Peter the Athonite (+681) that while living virtually alone on the Holy Mountain as a hermit, he had a vision of the Mother of God telling St. Nicholas of her love for the place. "The time will come when, from every direction, it will be filled with a multitude of monks.... If those monks shall labor for God with all their hearts and faithfully keep His commandments, I will vouchsafe them great gifts on the great day of my Son. And, while even here on earth, they will receive great aid from me. I shall lighten their afflictions and labors. I will be for the monks an invincible ally, invisibly guiding and guarding them, a healer, a source nourishing them, and make it possible for them, with but scant means, to have sufficiency for life." Over the centuries the monks who came to inhabit Athos experienced the truth of these words. Not in name only but in very deed is the Mother of God honored as the Abbess of the Holy Mountain.
• The Most Holy Theotokos in commemoration of Icon of the Mother of God of IGOR (1147) 伊格尔圣母像纪念日
Σύναξις Ὑπεραγίας Θεοτόκου τοῦ Ἰγκὸρ ἐν Κιέβῳ
The holy Passion-Bearer and Great Prince of Kiev Igor Ol’govich prayed before this icon during the last moments of his life in the chapel of St John the Theologian in the Dormition Cathedral of the Kiev Caves Lavra. This icon was of old Greek origin, and had an inscription saying that it belonged to St Igor.
• Commemoration of the Miraculous Deliverance (1893) from Drought of Kainourgio by Theotokos in Vlochos the Panagia VLOCHAITISSA (Oraiotates) who helping barren women bear children, and healing illnesses in a manner unexplained by modern physicians
Up the mountain where the ancient city of Thestieis is located, in the region of Aitoloakarnanias, a few kilometers before Agrinio, is the Monastery of the Panagia the Vlochaitissa with its wonderworking icon. The icon gets its name from the location of the monastery, which is officially called the Monastery of the Dormition of the Theotokos in Vlochos. The icon of Panagia Vlochaitissa, or Panagia Oraiotates, depicts the Virgin Mary enthroned with the Christ Child seated on her lap, surrounded by four prophets and two angels. This icon is a source of numerous miracles, which includes helping barren women bear children, and healing illnesses in a manner unexplained by modern physicians. It is truly an icon full of grace. One particular miracle is celebrated annually at this monastery on June 5th. In 1893, after many months of drought in the area of Aetolia, residents and priests of the town of Kainourgio decided after some days of fasting and going to confession to turn to their patron, Panagia the Vlochaitissa, and seek her help by going up to her monastery. A Divine Liturgy was celebrated and everyone communed, then they bore the sacred icon on their shoulders and processed with it down to the town of Kainourgio. There, in the town square, with tears in their eyes, they begged the Mother of God to deliver them from the drought that brought them much affliction, damaging their crops and drying up their wells. Then suddenly, the miracle took place. A cloud appeared over the monastery that brought down rain with it. It was the rain asked for by the residents. The inhabitants further reported that the rain only fell on the town of Kainourgio. They all glorified God. The elderly of the town even today remember the story as it was told to them by their parents and grandparents who were eye-witnesses, and they would speak of it with tears in their eyes. It was a clear indication of divine intervention on their behalf. In order to not forget this great miracle of the Panagia Vlochaitissa, an annual celebration was established on June 5th, when residents of the area go up to the monastery and celebrate the Divine Liturgy, thanking God and the Panagia for their covering and help and protection in their lives.
• Martyresses ZENAIS, CYRIA, VALERIA & MARCIA
A group of Christians who converted together, were imprisoned together, tortured together, and martyred together. This seems to be an amalgam of two sets of martyrs. Zenais apparently suffered at Constantinople. The other three are early martyrs at Caesarea and appear to be contemporaries of Jesus.
