Icon of the Mother of God From time immemorial the Russian people, with faith in the all-powerful help of the Most Holy Theotokos, considered the title “Seeker of the Perishing” to refer not only to those who are dying, but to those whose souls are in danger of spiritual death.

Born in Ireland, Indract was the son of an Irish king who visited Glastonbury in the early 8th century with nine companions, while journeying home from a pilgrimage to Rome. On leaving the abbey, they were murdered at a place called Hywise (probably Huish Episcopi, Somerset) with his sister St Dominica (Drusa) and others near Glastonbury in England, by heathen: by one of the nobles of King Ine of Wessex named Huna and his men, out of greed for the wealth they were thought to be carrying. The bodies were buried in a cave, but a persistent light shone over their grave which caused the king who was staying nearby to discover the murder and order their re-burial at the abbey: Indract by the altar, the others under the floor. Their relics were enshrined there. Miracles subsequently took place.

Jesus Christ, Lord of all things! You see my heart, you know my desires. Possess all that I am - you alone. I am your sheep; make me worthy to overcome the devil. - Saint Agatha
Lord, my creator, you have protected me since I was in the cradle. You have taken me from the love of the world and given me patience to suffer. Now receive my spirit. - Saint Agatha
My fellow Christians, our annual celebration of a martyr's feast has brought us together. Agatha achieved renown in the early Church for her noble victory. For her, Christ's death was recent, his blood was still moist. Her robe is the mark of her faithful witness to Christ. Agatha, the name of our saint, means "good." She was truly good, for she lived as a child of God. Agatha, her goodness coincides with her name and her way of life. She won a good name by her noble deeds, and by her name she points to the nobility of those deeds. Agatha, her mere name wins all men over to her company. She teaches them by her example to hasten with her to the true Good, God alone. - from a homily on Saint Agatha by Saint Methodius of Sicily
Agatha is the patroness of Catania, where she preserves Mt Etna from erupting. She is also patroness of breast cancer patients, of bell-founders (shaped like her breasts, or possibly because bells are used to warn of fire), martyrs, firefighters, girdlers, jewellers, maltsters, nurses, wet nurses, weavers, bakers and shepherdesses. Agatha is the patron saint of bell-founders because of the shape of her severed breasts, and also of bakers, whose loaves were blessed at her feast day. Minne di Sant'Agata, a typical Sicilian sweet shaped as a breast, representing the cut breasts of Saint Agatha. Agatha is invoked against earthquake, fire, lightning, storm, sterility, wolves, and diseases of the breast.
Born in Catania in Sicily, where she was martyred. She was handed over to a prostitute and her breasts were cut off. The Apostle Peter healed her of this mutilation while she was in prison, where she subsequently reposed. At Agatha's burial, attended by many, her Guardian Angel appeared and placed a marble slab on her tomb, inscribed with the words: A righteous mind, self- determining, honor from God, the deliverance of her fatherland.
