Synaxis of Mothers of the Three Hierarchs: Saints EMMELIA (375) the mother of Basil the Great, NONNA the mother of Gregory the Theologian, and ANTHOUSA (347-407) the mother of John Chrysostom // SUNDAY AFTER FEB 2 THE FEAST OF THE RECEPTION OF THE LORD //
The Holy Synod of the Church of Greece has determined, that the memory of the three holy mothers of the Three Hierarchs be honored. They are Saint Emmelia, the mother of Basil the Great (379), Macrina the Younger (330–379) and Gregory of Nyssa (334-394), Naukratios of Mount Nitria (332-358), and Peter of Sebaste (347-392), Emmelia is also commemorated on May 30th; Saint Nonna of Nazianzus, the mother of Gregory the Theologian, Gorgonia (February 23) and Caesarius of Nazianzus (March 9), Nonna is also commemorated on August 5th; and Saint Anthousa, the mother of John Chrysostom, for whom this is her primary feast.
One of the things are beneficial to the struggle as an Orthodox mom is reading the lives of holy Orthodox mothers. Their faith and example give the strength we need to continue moving forward in attempt to raise good Orthodox Christian children and to keep fighting our own spiritual battles. So many times when reading the lives of the saints we hear of their pious parents, most commonly their mothers. The stories that particularly strengthen are those of real Orthodox moms. Mothers who have run their race and finished successfully. Mothers who have not only secured sainthood for themselves but for their children.
Gregory championed Nonna as a model of Christian motherhood. He wrote of her: "My mother was a worthy companion for such a man (as my father) and her qualities were as great as his. She came from a pious family, but was even more pious than they. Though in her body she was but a woman, in her spirit she was above all men... Her mouth knew nothing but the truth, but in her modesty she was silent about those deeds which brought her glory. She was guided by the fear of God."
And speaking further of his parents as models of Christian parentage, he wrote: "Our mother, from the beginning and by virtue of descent, consecrated to God and receiving piety as a necessary heritage not for herself alone, but also for her children, was truly a holy lump from the holy first fruits of the dough. She so far increased and augmented it that some have expressed their belief the assertion is bold, but I will make it that not even her husband's perfection was any other's work than hers. And how wonderful it is that a greater and more perfect piety was bestowed as the reward of piety! Both were lovers of their children and of Christ. Yet it is a striking paradox that they were more devoted lovers of Christ than of their children. Their sole enjoyment in their children was that they be known as Christ's and called His. Their single definition of good children comprised virtue and kinship with the Chief Good. Compassionate and sympathetic, they rescued much treasure from moths and brigands and from the prince of this world, transferring it from their place of exile to their homeland, and storing up the glory of heaven for their children as their greatest inheritance."

He was an ardent defender of Saint John Chrysostom against Theophilos of Alexandria, and was Saint Cyril the Great's cousellor against the heretic Nestorius. Thanks to his life of prayer, he instructed and illumined the entire world by his numerous letters, converting sinners, supporting the just, and clearly explaining passages from Holy Scripture to those who asked him. We have still extant two thousand and twelve of his letters, abounding with excellent instructions of piety, and with theological and critical learning. They are concise, and the style natural, very elegant, agreeable, full of fire and penetration. Possevin laments that they are not in use as a classic author for the Greek language. His prudence, undaunted zeal, profound humility, ardent love of God, and other virtues, shine admirably in them. The Church historian Evagrius (6th c.) writes of Saint Isidore, "his life seemed to everyone the life of an angel upon the earth." Another historian, Nicephorus Callistus (ninth century), praises Saint Isidore thus: "He was a vital and inspired pillar of monastic rules and divine vision, and as such he presented a very lofty image of most fervent example and spiritual teaching."

• THEOPHILUS the Penitent (538)
Likely to be a legendary figure. A 10th c. Latin play by Hrosvitha of Gandesheim depicts Theophilus as administrator (or archdeacon) of Adana, Cilicia, who declined a bishopric because of his humility. He was deposed of his office in the Church by the man who became bishop and was so furious that he made a pact with Satan, who had him restored to his position. He later repented, appealed to Our Lady, found the pact he had signed with satan on his chest when he awoke on morning, did penance for his deed, made a public confession of his sin, and had the bishop burn the pact before the congregation. This story, of course, is the basis of Goethe's Faust.
In art Saint Theophilus is an archdeacon making a pact with the devil from which he is rescued by the Virgin; sometimes she is shown handing him back the contract. There is an interesting representation of this on the Romanesque portal at Souillac, Languedoc, France.
+
Archdeacon and treasurer of the church in Adana, Cilicia (in modern Turkey). Offered the bishopric of Adana, he declined, saying he was not adequate to the task. Due to slander accusing him of theft of church funds, the new bishop removed him from his position. In anger, Theophilus signed a pact with a demon to avenge himself on the bishop and regain his position. When he came to his senses, he begged for the help of Our Lady who intervened, recovered the pact, and tore it up. The pact was burned in the public square, and this legend has figured in many dramas since, including Goethe's Faust.
