Crete, throughout its history, has been blessed by God to have had many holy Christian personalities that were either born there or taught there. Gortyn, Gortys or Gortyna (Greek: Γόρτυν, Γόρτυς, or Γόρτυνα, pronounced [ˈɣortina]) is a municipality and an archaeological site on the Mediterranean island of Crete, 45 km away from the modern capital Heraklion. The seat of the municipality is the village Agioi Deka. Gortyn, the Roman capital of Creta et Cyrenaica, was first inhabited around 3 200 BC. It is located in the valley of Messara in the south of the Psiloritis mountain, in the current position of the settlements of Metropolis and Agioi Deka, and near the Libyan Sea.

Martyred in the persecution of Emperor Commodus. Died stretched on the rack, beaten with clubs, burned, then beaten to death with lead-tipped whips in 192 at Rome, Italy.
• Virgin Martyrissa LUCILLA and her father Martyr NEMESIUS a Deacon (254) martyred in Rome under Valerian
Lucilla was blind from her birth, and was taken by her father to be cured and baptized by St. Stephen, the Bishop of Rome. Many others were converted and baptized on account of the miracle. Nemesius rejoiced to see her go before him to the martyr's glory. He was beheaded between the Via Latina and Via Appia.

Genesius was an actor who worked in a series of plays that mocked Christianity. One day while performing in a work that made fun of Baptism he received sudden wisdom from God, realized the truth of Christianity, and had a conversion experience on stage. He announced his new faith, and refused to renounce it, even when ordered to do so by emperor Diocletian.

Hunegund was drawn to religious life, but was compelled to marry against her wishes. When they returned home, Hunegund entered the convent at Homblieres in northern France; her ex-future husband became a priest, and served as chaplain to the convent.
