Synaxis of the Seven Saints of VOLHYNIA
Σύναξις τῶν Ἁγίων τῆς Βολυνίας
Volhynia was once of what the Russian chronicles call “Chervonnaya Rus”, which means literally “Red Russia”, brought to the Orthodox Christian faith in the time of Grand Prince Vladimir. Ravaged by Mongol Hordes, occupied by Poland-Lithuania, absorbed back into the Russian Empire under Catherine the Great, Volhynia returned briefly to Poland after World War I and then became part of the Soviet Union after World War II. Despite its turbulent history, Volhynia is today largely Orthodox Christian. At the region’s Orthodox heart is one of the most revered monasteries of Russian and Ukrainian Orthodoxy, the Holy Dormition Pochaev Lavra.
Many saints and righteous ones have come from Volhynia, but those commemorated by name on the feast of the Synaxis are:

• Commemoration of the Reunion of 3 000 000 Uniates with the Orthodox Church at Vilnius (1831) 纪念1831年300万合并派教徒(东仪天主教教徒)回归正统教会
Vilna was accessed by Russia after the partition of Poland in the late 1700's. There was an uprising by the Poles in 1831. This reunion may have been a result of the uprising. The final step of the full particularity of the Ukrainian Church was then effected by the development of the middle Ruthenian language into separate Ukrainian and Belarusian language around 1600 to 1800. After the partition of Poland, the uniate territory was mostly divided between Russia and Austria. Only in the easternmost areas did the population volutarily returned to Orthodoxy. The Russian authorities were however extremely tolerant of the uniate church and allowed it to function (calling them Basilians). However immediately the clergy was split into pro-Catholic and pro-Russian. The former, to avoid persucution began converting to pure Catholicism, whilst the latter could only have their demands met after the failed uprising of 1831. In 1839 the Sinod of Polotsk (Modern Belarus) under the leadership of bishop Joseph Yamashko agreed to terminate the uniate chuch and all its property transferred into Orthodox. The event was commemorated by a special medal bearing an inscription "Torn away by violence (1596), reunited by love (1839)".

ALDHELM (Adhelm, Aldelmus) Bishop of Sherborne (639-709)
Ὁ Ἅγιος Ἀλδέλμος Ἐπίσκοπος Σέρμπορν
Bishop and abbot, also called Adelemus, Athelmas, Adelnie, Eadelhelm, Aedelhem. Born about 639, and a relative of King Ine of Wessex, he received his early education at Malmesbury, in Wiltshire, England. There he was trained by an Irish teacher, Maildubh, and by Adrian, a native of Roman Africa. Adrian arrived in England with Bishop Theodore and was made abbot of St. Augustine's, Canterbury. After his training in Malmesbury, Aldhelrn was named abbot of Malmesbury, where he practiced great austerity. During his term in office the abbey prospered, and he also founded St. Lawrence monastery, in the area of Bradfordon-on-Avon. Aldhelm went to Rome to represent Malmesbury before Pope Sergius. He also counseled the Wessex Synod. In 705, Aldhelm succeeded Hedda as bishop of Sherborne, Hedda's original diocese being divided. He died only four years later. A silver shrine was erected at Malmesbury in 857 by King Ethelwulf. The shrine honored not only the saint's holiness but his extraordinary and long-lasting impact on English scholarship. He was the first Englishman to promote classical learning in the isles. Some evidence of his own remarkable literary skills is extant.
ARWA (Arve)
BEDE the Venerable, Hieromonk of Wearmouth and Jarrow (673-735) Father of English History
Bede was born near St Peter and St Paul monastery at Wearmouth-Jarrow, England. He was sent there when he was three and educated by Abbots Benedict Biscop and Ceolfrid. He became a monk at the monastery, was ordained when thirty, and except for a few brief visits elsewhere, spent all of his life in the monastery, devoting himself to the study of Scripture and to teaching and writing. He is considered one of the most learned men of his time and a major influence on English literature. His writings are a veritable summary of the learning of his time and include commentaries on the Pentateuch and various other books of the Bible, theological and scientific treatises, historical works, and biographies. His best-known work is HISTORIA ECCLESIASTICA, a history of the English Church and people, which he completed in 731. It is an account of Christianity in England up to 729 and is a primary source of early English history. Called "the Venerable" to acknowledge his wisdom and learning, the title was formalized at the Council of Aachen in 853. He was a careful scholar and distinguished stylist, the "father" of English history, the first to date events anno domini (A.D.). He died in Wearmouth-Jarrow on May 25.

Dunchadh was born into the line of Conall Gulban. He became a monk at Killochuir in southeast Ulster and, from 710 until his death, ruled the abbey of Iona, Scotland. During Dunchadh's abbacy, Saint Egbert finally convinced the Celtic monks of Iona to adopt the Roman customs ― tonsure, date of Easter, Benedictine Rule. For Saint Bede, this was the final sign of unity from diversity, which was the main theme of his Ecclesiastical History. Dunchadh is the titular saint of Killclocair, in the diocese of Armagh. His feast is still celebrated in Donegal on May 25; elsewhere it is March 24. He is the patron of sailors in Ireland.

Third Finding (850) of the Precious Head of JOHN 约安 the Baptist (29) 第三次寻获前驱,先知,施浸礼者圣约安之尊贵圣首纪念日 hidden in the bowels of the earth for many long years
Μνήμη τρίτης εὑρέσεως τῆς τιμίας κεφαλῆς τοῦ προφήτου Προδρόμου καὶ Βαπτιστοῦ Ἰωάννου
The Third Discovery of the Venerable Head of the Holy Prophet, Fore-Runner and Baptist of the Lord John occurred in about the year 850 (the account about the First and Second Discoveries is located under 24 February). During the time of unrest at Constantinople connected with the exile of Sainted John Chrysostom (Comm. 13 November), the head of Saint John the Fore-Runner was found in the city of Emesia. It was transferred from there during the time of Saracen raids (about 820-820) to Komana and there ― during a period of iconoclast persecution, it was hidden in the ground. When the veneration of icons was restored, Patriarch Ignatios (847-857) during the time of prayer at night was shown in a vision the place, where the head of Saint John the Fore-Runner was concealed. The hierarch communicated this to the emperor, who dispatched a delegation to Komana, and there the head was found a third time at the place decreed by the patriarch in about the year 850. Afterwards the head was again transferred to Constantinople, and here on 25 May it was placed in a church at the court. Part of the head is located at Athos. In memory of the Third Discovery of the Head of the Baptist of the Lord John, the celebration is on 25 May.

• Hieromartyr URBAN Pope of Rome (230)
Born in Rome, Italy; died there on May 23, 230. Pope Saint Urban, son of Pontianus, was elected pope c. 222 to succeed Pope Saint Callistus I. He ruled during a relatively peaceful period of the early Church. Although he died on May 23, he was buried on May 25, which is celebrated as his feast day. At least one epistle survives him. Saint Urban is portrayed in art after his beheading, with the papal tiara near him. Otherwise, he may be depicted as idols fall from a column while he is beheaded; scourged at the stake; seated in a landscape as a young man (Saint Valerian) kneels before him and a priest holds a book; or sometimes as a pope with a bunch of grapes (confused with the bishop, Saint Urban of Langres). He is invoked against storm and lightning.
URBAN I Pope of Rome (230) elected pope in 222. He was a Roman and served as bishop of Rome for almost nine years. Hippolytus may have been anti-pope during his reign, and legends say that Urban baptized Valerian, the husband of St Cecilia. Urban died in 230 and was buried in the cemetary of Callixtus • Venerable URBAN of Heilbronn (656)
Urban is called a student of Gallus. He is said to have preached in the 7th century near Heilbronn am Neckar and taught viticulture. According to legend, he erected a cross around which a grape vine snaked.
ZENOBIUS 1st Bishop of Florence (390)
Ὁ Ἅγιος Ζηνόβιος Ἐπίσκοπος Φλωρεντίας
Born a pagan, Zenobius converted and was baptized as an adult. Priest. Archdeacon. He was a member of the Florentine Geronimo family. Zenobius is best known for his close friendships with Saints Ambrose of Milan and Pope St Damasus I (r. 366-384) The latter used him as a papal legate to Constantinople (modern Istanbul,Turkey) to deliver the papal views concerning the Arian heresy which was then troubling the Church. Worked with Saint Eugene of Florence and Saint Crescentius. Zenobius was famous for miracles, including raising five people from the dead.
The Three Marys (1st c.)
This feast is observed in Camargue at the mouth of the Rhône (and elsewhere) in honor of Mary Madgalen, Mary the wife of Cleophas (John 19:25), and Mary the mother of James (Mark 15:40). It is associated with the legend that these three Marys, together with Lazarus, whom Jesus raised from the dead, his sister Martha, who had been 'cumbered about much serving', and other pious people, driven out of Palestine, arrived at Marseilles and proceeded to evangelize Provence. The beginnings of this baseless story are first found only in the 11th century in connection with the alleged relics of Mary Magdalen at Vézelay, Burgundy. Nevertheless, it is still popularly believed in Provence and other places.
• Finding of the Holy Icon in Ermoupolis on the island of Syros, in the Cyclades, Greece (1936) of St DEMETRIOS the Myrrh-gusher
Μνήμη εὐρέσεως τῆς ἱερᾶς εἰκόνος τοῦ Ἁγίου Μεγαλομάρτυρος Δημητρίου τοῦ Μυροβλύτου
On the Greek island of Syros in the Cyclades, in the village of Vapori a little outside Hermoupolis, on 25 May 1936, the icon of the Holy Great-Martyr Demetrios the Myrrhgusher was discovered. It was found by a resident of Hermoupolis by the name of Manousos Pelekis after he was told of its whereabouts in a vision. On the spot of its discovery, Metropolitan Philaretos of Syros built a magnificent church to honor the miracle. This is the first church the visitor to the island sees when approaching Syros by sea. When ships approach the island, they do not whistle upon entering or exiting the port of Hermoupolis, but when passing this church. It is one of the most visited sites on the island. The discovery of the icon of St Demetrios is celebrated on the last Sunday of May.
In the Name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit.
O God, be merciful to me, a sinner.
愿上帝怜恤我罪人
O Lord Jesus Christ, Son of God,
for the sake of the prayers
of Thy most pure Mother,
our holy and God-bearing fathers and all the saints, have mercy on us.
Amen.

Blessed be God.
