2nd Tuesday after PASCHA
RADONITSA • Day of Rejoicing. Commemoration of the Dead

On this day, the Tuesday of St Thomas week, according to the order instituted by our Holy Fathers, we call to remembrance, in Paschal joy, all those who have died from the beginning of the ages in faith and in the hope of resurrection and life eternal. The Slavs, like many ancient peoples, had a tradition of visiting family members' graves during the springtime and feasting together with them. After their conversion to Christianity, this custom transferred into the Russian Orthodox Church as the festival of Radonitsa, the name of which comes from the Slavic word "radost’", meaning "joy". In Kievan Rus' the local name is "Krasnaya Gorka" (Красная горка, "Beautiful Hill"), and has the same meaning. It may seem strange to call a memorial for the departed "joyful", but the Christian belief that lies behind this joy is the remembrance of Jesus' Resurrection and the joy and hope it brings to all. The commemoration of the departed after Pascha was also done in extreme antiquity. St Ambrose of Milan (340 – 397) says in one of his sermons: "It is truly meet and right, brethren, that after the celebration of Pascha, which we have celebrated, to share our joy with the holy martyrs and by them as participants in the suffering of the Lord, to announce the glory of the resurrection of the Lord". Although these words of St Ambrose relate to martyrs, they may be an indication of our custom to commemorate the departed after Pascha on Monday or Tuesday of Thomas Week because the beginning of the solemn commemorations in the faith of those who died is established in the New Testament Church as a pious custom to the memory of the martyrs, both among the martyrs buried in antiquity and the others who have died. Having previously celebrated the radiant feast of Christ's glorious Resurrection, the faithful commemorate the dead today with the pious intent to share the great joy of this Pascha feast with those who have departed this life in the hope of their own resurrection. This is the same blessed joy with which the dead heard our Lord announce His victory over death when He descended into Hades, thus leading forth by the hand the righteous souls of the Old Covenant into Paradise. This is the same unhoped-for joy the Holy Myrrhbearing Women experienced when discovering the empty tomb and the undisturbed grave clothes. In addition, this is the same bright joy the Holy Apostles encountered in the Upper Room where Christ appeared though the doors were closed. In short, this feast is a kindred joy, to celebrate the luminous Resurrection with our Orthodox forefathers who have fallen asleep. There is evidence of the commemoration of the dead today in the writings of the Church Fathers. St John Chrysostom mentions the commemoration of the dead performed on Tuesday of St Thomas week in his "Homily on the Cemetery and the Cross". The faithful departed are remembered in Divine Liturgies, 'koliva' is prepared and blessed in the churches in memory of those who have fallen asleep, and the Orthodox graves in cemeteries are blessed by the priests and visited by the faithful. On this day alms are given to the poor. Furthermore, it should be noted that due to the great spiritual joy this jubilant commemoration bears, it is called in the Slavonic tongue, "Radonitsa", or Day of Rejoicing.

The pious hegumen-elder of this monastery received a revelation about his impending end. Before death he wanted to be communed the Holy Mysteries of Christ and he besought of the serving priest to hasten to make the Divine Liturgy, but that one did not heed his request. Then from the wonderworking Gerontissa Icon in the altar was heard a fiercesome voice, ordering the priest to hasten to fulfill the wish of his hegumen. Another miracle from the icon occurred, when through the prayer of the head of the monastery, oil appeared in empty monastic vessels.On the icon, the Mother of God is imaged in full stature without the Christ-Child. Before Her is a vessel, from which oil pours out over the edge. An icon of the Gerontissa Mother of God is known of in the altar of the Uspenie-Dormition cathedral church in the Pochaev Lavra. Through the blessing of Archbishop Modest of Volynsk and Zhitomir, priest-servers before the start of Divine-services asked the blessing for the start of services in front of the Icon of the Mother of God.

June 9, 1928. S. Antonov came, as was agreed with the monks, on Volkozero. In place of the cell, he found charred logs and among them - two skeletons. An investigation began; established that in the forest there was a murder and arson. They were committed on Tuesday of the Bright Week with the purpose of robbing of two residents of the village of Korovinskaya - Komsomol member V. Ivanov and his comrade S. Yarygin. Both criminals were young people brought up under Soviet rule, who assumed that the archimandrite kept the treasures of the Solovetsky Monastery. On the eve of the feast of the Holy Pascha, the criminals gathered to go to the forest to rob monks. In the evening of April 17, 1928 they went to Volkozero. It was Tuesday of the Holy Week, the monks performed a festive Divine Service in their cell. The robbers waited for a long time, when in the hut the light turned off. At last it became dark, Ivanov went to the cell and opened fire on the windows. He released 4 patrons in a row. However, the gangsters did not dare enter the cell, they were filled with an incomprehensible horror. Having made their way to the passage, they climbed into the attic, where were kept supplies, outer clothing, shoes. Taking all this, the robbers backed the door with a stake, doused the cell with kerosene found in the attic, and set it on fire ... Even the Soviet court of that time could not justify the monstrous massacre of 20th year old guys over helpless old men. The murderers were sentenced to long terms of imprisonment.

The blind monk Anthimos was born in Kefalonia in 1727. He became a monk at Aghio Oros and visited many sacred places in Greece. He cloistered at the Monastery of Saint Matrona in Chios, where, according to tradition, he was sleeping on the church’s floor. He is considered the missionary of the Cyclades and the Dodecanese, because, on his passage through these islands, his preaching were of great spiritual benefit for the inhabitants and he left behind great work. The monk Anthimos Kourkoulis renovated the Monastery at Lepeda in 1769 and converted it into a woman’s monastery.

This lake, at present, is known as Lough Gara, or Lough O'Gara, near Boyle, and on the borders of the counties of Roscommon and Sligo. The river Boyle has its source from this lake. We are informed, that St Patrick, while in Connaught, resolved to visit Moylurg, and that passing through Bearnas Hua Noililla, or the gaps of Collooney, he moved onward towards the River Buill—now the Boyle—which takes its rise in Loch Techet.

A taciturn hermit monk in Liskeard, Cornwall, England, at whose grave King Alfred is said to have been cured of a serious illness. Saint Gwerir's cell was occupied after his death by Saint Neot.

ISIDORE 伊西多若 of Seville, Bishop of Seville (636)

Born in Cartagena in Spain, he was the brother of Sts Leander, Fulgentius and Florentina. He succeeded St Leander as Bishop of Seville in 600. He presided over several Councils, reorganised the Spanish Church, encouraged monastic life, completed the Mozarabic rite, was an encyclopedic writer and was also responsible for the Council of Toledo in 633.

The Monk Jakov of Galich asceticised during the 15-16 Centuries at the Starotorzhsk monastery in the city of Galich in the Kostroma district, nearby the Stolbischa marker, or Staroe-town. They suggest, that the Starotorshzk monastery was founded by the Monk Jakov of Zhelesnoborovsk (11 April). The Monk Jakov died a schema-monk and was buried beneathe the altar of the monastery church in honour of Saints Boris and Gleb. His image was written similar to that of the Monk Zosima of Solovetsk (17 April).

In his grievous illness he turned to God with prayer and made a vow: if the Lord granted him health, he would then serve the brethren of the Kievo-Pechersk monastery until the end of his days. The prayer of the much-sick sufferer was heard. After his return to health, he entered the Kievo-Pechersk monastery, took monastic vows and began fervently to work at deeds of fasting and prayer, and with love to serve the brethren. After his death the Monk Joseph was buried in the Farther Caves (his memory is likewise celebrated together with the Sobor-Assemblage of the Monks of the Farther Caves on 28 August).

Saint Merryn is the titular patron of a place in Cornwall. He may be identical with the Breton saint honoured at Lanmerin and Plomelin. During the medieval period, the legendary Saint Marina was believed to have been its patron.

Ὁ Ἅγιος Θεωνᾶς Ἀρχιεπίσκοπος Θεσσαλονίκης
Saint Theonas was a disciple of Saint James of Kastoria (November 1), and lived at the beginning of the sixteenth century. He lived for some time in the Pantocrator and Simonopetra Monasteries on Mt Athos. He founded the Monastery of Saint Anastasia, and was consecrated as Archbishop of Thessalonica. He died in peace.

TIGERNACH (Tigernake, Tierney, Tierry) of Clones (549) Abbot of Clones, succeeded St Macartin as Bishop at Clogher in Ireland
Abbot Saint Tigernach of Cluanois (Clones) Abbey in Monaghan succeeded Saint Macartan as bishop of Clogher, Ireland. While the details of his life are unreliable because they were written from tradition centuries after his death, he is said to have had a tragic childhood and to have died blind. They say that he was the son of a famous general named Corbre and Dearfraych, the daughter of an Irish king named Eochod. He was baptized by Bishop Saint Conleth of Kildare with Saint Brigid as his godmother. While still a youth, he was captured by pirates and taken to the British king, who placed him in the monastery of Rosnat. There he learned to serve God with his whole heart, mind, soul, and strength. When he returned to Ireland, he was reluctantly consecrated bishop, and, upon the death of Macartan in 506, took over that see.
• Venerable Hieromonk ZOSIMAS 佐西玛 of Palestine (560) a monk of the Jordanian monastic community during the reign of Emperor Theodosius the Younger. It was he who discovered, administered Holy Communion to and buried the body of St Mary the Egyptian. He died in the Lord in his 100th year in the 6h century

The Monk Zosima of Vorbozomsk was the founder of a monastery in honour of the Annuniciation of the MostHoly Mother of God on an island in Lake Vorbozoma, situated 23 versts to the south of Belozersk. The monastery was founded way back in the XV Century, since it is known, that in the year 1501 the head of the monastery was Hegumen Jona, a disciple of the Monk Zosima. The monastery was among the number of those numerous wilderness-monasteries (small monasteries) which, being of the form of the so-called "Trans-Volga" monasteries, were dispersed around the Kirillo-Belozersk monastery. The Monk Zosima died in the first half of the 16th century. It is known, that the monk wrote guidances and letters to his spiritual daughter Anastasia.
