We know very little about the holy new martyrs, who were almost our contemporaries. Therefore we do not learn from their experience or turn to them in prayer. We need to pray especially to Holy Hieromartyr Seraphim (Chichagov) that he would enlighten our minds; that we would see life as it really is before God and not before people; that we would understand the signs of the times, and be able to make sense of the complicated, contradictory world in which we live, in which God has judged that we must live.
Holy Hieromartyr Seraphim, pray to God for us! Amen.

• Venerable Martyress ANNA 安纳 of Constantinople, W., Matr., Nun (766) beaten for speaking on behalf of Saint Stephen, was perfected
Ἡ Ἁγία Ἄννα ἡ Ὁσιομάρτυς
Anna was a woman of noble birth who, after her husband's death, was tonsured into monasticism by St Stephen the New. Emperor Constantine Copronymus urged her to say that she had engaged in illicit physical relations with St Stephen, in order to humiliate him before the people. However, this holy woman refused to join in the emperor's intrigue against the saint, whom she venerated as her spiritual father. For that, she was whipped and then cast into prison. The emperor sat in a public building with an assembled crowd, and had Saint Anna brought to his presence. Since she insisted that both she and Saint Stephen were innocent, the emperor had her stripped naked in the sight of all. During her interrogation, she remained silent. Meanwhile, her maidservant falsely swore that Saint Stephen had sinned with her mistress.
Angered by her refusal to speak, the emperor had Saint Anna stretched out on the ground, where soldiers beat her with rods. During this torment, she said, "I have never sinned with Stephen. Lord, have mercy." The soldiers continued to beat her until she was almost dead.
The emperor returned to his palace, leaving orders that Saint Anna be imprisoned in one of the city’s abandoned monasteries. There she departed to the Lord, receiving from Him the twin crowns of virginity and martyrdom.

Christos was an Albanian Christian living in Constantinople and a gardener by trade. After interrogation, he was chained and cast into prison. In prison, someone offered him food, which Christos refused, saying: "It is better that I appear before my Christ hungry." After that, he pulled out some money he had concealed under his belt and gave it to one of his fellow prisoners, requesting that the money be used for several Liturgies to be celebrated for his soul. He was beheaded by the Turks in the year 1748, and was glorified forever in the Kingdom of Christ God.

• Venerable Martyr STEPHEN 斯特梵 the New 幼者, of Mt St Auxentius and (767) from Constantinople
Ὁ Ὅσιος Στέφανος ὁ Ὁμολογητής ὁ Νέος
Reading the examples of perseverance in the Faith and generosity of the saints of God, we also become persevering in the Faith and generous. When Copronymus's men urged St Stephen to reject the veneration of icons to please the iconoclastic emperor, Stephen extended his hand, clenched his fist and said: "If I had in myself only a fist full of blood, I would shed it for the icon of Christ." As St Stephen the Protomartyr suffered at the hands of the Jews, so this Stephen suffered at the hands of the iconoclastic heretics.
On the following morning over Mount Auxentios there appeared a fiery cloud, and then an heavy darkness descended upon the capital with a fierce thunderstorm, which struck at much.
A gravely ill soldier was brought to St Stephen the New to be healed by him through prayer. Stephen told him to venerate the icons of Christ and the Holy Theotokos. The solider did this and was immediately restored to health, and this miracle was spoken of everywhere. Hearing of this, the iconoclastic Emperor Constantine Copronymus summoned this soldier and questioned him. When the soldier confessed that he received healing from the holy icons, the emperor reproached him with fury for venerating them. The frightened soldier repudiated the veneration of icons before the emperor and grew ashamed of his faith in them. When the soldier left the court and mounted his horse, the horse went wild under him, threw him off and trampled him with its hooves until he gave up his soul. Behold: a punishment immediately following sin. But it never fails to come, except where repentance takes the place of punishment.
• SIMEON the Logothete (1000) also known as Simeon Metaphrastes
Saint Simeon was probably a Logothete (secretary of state) to Emperor Constantine VII Porphyrogenitus, at whose order he compile a menology of legends and stories of the Byzantine saints under the name Simeon the Logothete. It is the most famous of the Medieval Greek collections, comparable to The Golden Legend of Blessed James Voragine in the west. Because he "retold" the stories, he received the moniker "metaphrastes" (reteller). Simeon also wrote a chronicle, prayers, letters, and collections of maxims of Basil and Macarius of Egypt.
