• Holy Great Martyr JAMES 雅各 the Persian 波斯人 surnamed Intercisus (421)
Ὁ Ἅγιος Ἰάκωβος ὁ Πέρσης
Military officer and courtier to King Jezdigerd I. During Jezdigerd's persecution of Christians, James apostacized. Following Jezdigerd's death, he was contacted by family members who had never renounced their faith. James experienced a crisis of faith and conscience, and openly expressed his faith to the new king Bahram. He was condemned, tortured and martyred.
The emperor then gave orders to deliver the saint over to a death by martyrdom. They placed the martyr on a chopping-block and they alternately cut off his fingers and his toes, and then his hands and his feet. During the prolonged torture Saint James incessantly offered up prayer of thanks to the Lord, that He had granted him the possibility through the terrible torments to be redeemed of the sins committed. Flowing with blood the martyr was then beheaded.
When the executioners severed the thumb of St James's right hand, he said: "Even a vine is pruned in this manner, so that in time a young branch may grow."
At the severing of his 2nd finger, he said: "Receive also, O Lord, the 2nd branch of Thy sowing."
At the severing of his 3rd finger, he said: "I bless the Father, the Son and the Holy Spirit."
At the severing of his 4th finger, he said: "O Thou who acceptest the praise of the 4 beasts (symbols of the four evangelists), accept the suffering of the 4th finger."
At the severing of the 5th finger, he said: "May my rejoicing be fulfilled as that of the 5 wise virgins at the wedding feast."
During the severing of the 6th finger, he said: "Thanks be to Thee, O Lord, Who at the 6th hour stretched out Thy most pure arms on the Cross, that Thou hast made me worthy to offer Thee my 6th finger."
At the severing of the 7th finger, he said: "Like David who praised Thee 7 times daily, I praise Thee through the 7th finger severed for Thy sake." At the severing of the 8th finger, he said: "On the 8th day Thou Thyself, O Lord, wast circumcised."
At the severing of the 9th finger, he said: "At the 9th hour, Thou didst commend Thy spirit into the hands of Thy Father, O my Christ, and I offer Thee thanks during the suffering of my 9th finger."
At the severing of the 10th finger, he said: "On a 10-stringed harp I sing to Thee, O God, and thank Thee that Thou hast made me worthy to endure the severing of the 10 fingers of my 2 hands, for the Ten Commandments written on two tablets." Oh, what wonderful faith and love! Oh, the noble soul of this knight of Christ!

Son of Achille, Laverius was raised in a pagan family. Served as a soldier in the imperial Roman army. A convert to Christianity, he began preaching in the streets of Teggiano, Italy. By order of the prefect Agrippa, Laverius was arrested, tortured, put on display for public abuse and ridicule, and ordered to make sacrifice to pagan gods; he refused. He was then thrown to wild animals in the amphitheatre, but instead of attacking him, they knelt in front of him. Laverius was thrown back into this cell, but an angel freed him during the night and ordered him to travel to Grumentum (modern Grumento Nova, Italy). He arrived on 15 August 312 and began immediately to preach and to baptize converts. Agrippa sent soldiers after him. Laverius was captured, flogged, and when he would not stop preaching Christ even while being beaten, he was executed.

Oda was born blind and her father sent her on pilgrimage to Liège to visit the relics of Saint Lambert. While praying at Saint Lambert's grave she was miraculously cured of her blindness. The miraculous cure of Oda is recorded in Saint Lambert's 8th century vitae. Vowing to dedicate her life to God, she returned to Scotland.
According to records, her father wanted her to arrange a marriage for her. Because of her vow she fled across the North Sea. After a pilgrimage to Rome and Monte Sant'Angelo sul Gargano, Oda prayed in various villages in the Netherlands and Belgium only to be repeatedly disturbed by magpies. Seeking solitude, she fled from the magpies and the birds led her to the open space in the forest. There the villagers built a hut for her.
In order to protect their humble shelter from the wind, hail, rain and snow and to hide from the view of the world, Oda planted some bushes. The following day they had already grown into a thick hedge. Her father sought for her, and as in the story of St Dymphna, her location was disclosed by her use of coins from her homeland. However, when he attempted to approach her hut, magpies repeatedly drove him off. Eventually he gave up and returned to Scotland without her. She remained there as a hermitess.
Saint Oda is usually depicted wearing a long blue gown with one shoulder bare. She usually carries a staff or a book (symbolic for her cure of blindness). She is always shown with a magpie on her hand and a crown under her feet (symbolic of her rejection of her earthly father's kingdom).

Abbot of Saint Peter's monastery in Salzburg, Austria; one of his monks was Saint Modestus. Bishop of Salzburg in 765, ordained by Duke Odilo. Saint Boniface twice accused him of heresy because of his scientific ideas (including a round earth), but this reflected some friction between the style and people of Roman and Celtic origins, and Virgilius was always cleared of the charges. He rebuilt the cathedral of Salzburg. Sent missionary priests to Carinthia, Austria.
