• Icon of the Mother of God of "THE SIGN"
The account of the Icon of the Sign is to be found on November 27. Today’s commemoration may be for a wonder-working copy of the original icon.
• PRISCUS 普里斯科, MALCHUS 玛尔霍 and ALEXANDER 亚历山大 in Caesaria of Palestine (259)
This trio of martyrs was thrown to the wild beasts during the public games at Caesarea, Palestine, under Valerian. During the height of the persecution they had secretly reproached themselves for their cowardice in hiding. Unable to suppress the emotions they felt, they said to one another, "While the secure gate of heaven is open, shall we shut it against ourselves? Shall we be so faint-hearted as not to suffer for the name of Christ, who died for us? Our brethren invite us by their example: their blood is a loud voice, which presses us to tread in their steps. Shall we be deaf to a cry calling us to the combat, and to a glorious victory?" Full of the Holy Spirit, they returned to Caesarea and presented themselves to the governor as Christians. Some were struck with admiration at this act of courage, but it incite the judge. They were tried, tortured, and exposed to wild beasts in the arena.

Saint Jonah was the brother of Saint Barachisius. The brothers Jonah and Barachisius were Christians who lived in the village of Yasa in Persia during the time of the emperor Sapor (310-331), a fierce persecutor of Christians. Learning that Christians were being tortured in the city of Baravokh, they went there to the prison where Saints Zanithas, Lazarus, Maruthas, Narses, Elias, Marinus, Habib, Sivsithina and Sava were being held. They encouraged them to adhere to the Christian Faith until the very end. The holy martyrs firmly confessed their faith in Christ and would not agree to the demands of the pagans. Therefore, they were subjected to fierce torments and death. The bodies of the holy martyrs Jonah, Barachisius and the other martyrs were buried by a pious Christian named Habdisotes.

Mother Gavrilia, who was known to many who are still alive, has not been officially glorified by the Church, but is considered by many to be a Saint of our time. Her biography, "Ascetic of Love", has been translated into English and several other languages. Mother Gavrilia was born in Constantinople on October 15, 1897. She grew up in the city until her family moved to Thessalonika in 1923. She traveled to England in 1938 and stayed there throughout World War II. She trained as a physiotherapist and, in 1945, returned to Greece where she worked with the Friends Refugee Mission and the American Farm School in Thessalonika. Later, she opened her own therapy office in Athens. In March 1954, her mother died, and the therapy office was closed. Gavrilia left Greece and traveled to India where she worked with the poorest of the poor, even the lepers, for five years. In 1959, she traveled to the Monastery of Mary and Martha in Bethany, Palestine, to become a nun. When she arrived, she asked Fr Theodosius, the chaplain, for a rule of prayer. Fr Theodosius was somewhat surprised to find that she could read ancient Byzantine Greek and said, "The great elders that we hear about no longer exist. I certainly am not one. You came here to save your soul. If I start giving you rules, you will lose you soul and I will as well. But here is Fr John. He will be your elder." During her first year at the monastery, Fr.John set her to reading only the Gospels and the works of St John Climacus. It should be noted that at that time "The Ladder of Divine Ascent" had not been published in modern Greek. She lived for three years in Bethany. In April, 1962, word came that Patriarch Athenagoras of Constantinople wished to send an Orthodox monastic to Taize in France. Sister Gavrilia went by way of Taize (she spoke fluent French from childhood) to America. In 1963, she traveled back to Greece. She was tonsured at the Small Schema by Abbot Amphilochios (Makris) on Patmos in the Cave of St Anthony under the Monastery of Evangelismos just before she and Nun Tomasina left again for India. Elder Amphilochios was enthusiastic that a nun would be open to an active outreach in the world. In India, she lived for three years in Uttar Pradesh where Fr Lazarus Moore was the priest and where he consulted her in his translations of the Psalter and the Church Fathers. Between 1967 and 1977, Sister Gavrilia traveled as a missionary in East Africa, in Europe visiting old friends and her spiritual fathers Lev Gillet and Sophrony of Essex, again to America, and briefly in Sinai. She traveled extensively, with much concern and broad love for the people of God. Some of her spiritual children found her in Jerusalem beside the Tomb of Christ while others found her in the mission field of East Africa. Beginning around 1977, she lived hidden in a small apartment, the "House of the Angels", in Patissia in the midst of the noise and smog of central Athens. A little place, a hidden place, a precious place to those who knew her. In 1989, she moved to the Holy Protection Hermitage on the island of Aegina, close to the shrine of St Nectarios. There she called the last two of her spiritual children to become monastics, and she continued to receive many visitors. At the beginning of Great Lent in 1990, she was hospitalized for lymphatic cancer. She spent forty days in the hospital, leaving during Holy Week and receiving communion on Pascha. To the astonishment of her doctors, the cancer suddenly disappeared. Mother Gavrilia finally withdrew to a quiet place. With only one nun, she moved for the last time to the island of Leros. There they established the hesychastirion of the Holy Archangels. Only in the last year of her life did she accept the Great Schema at the hands of Fr Dionysious from Little St Anne's Skete on Mount Athos. He came to give her the Schema in the Chapel of the Panaghia in the Kastro on the top of Leros. Mother Gavrilia passed from this world on March 28, 1992, having never built a monastery. Over the years, six of her spiritual children became monastics, but never more that one or two were with her at a time. Only the angels could count the number of lives that God touched and changed through her. Her biography and collected writings were published in Greek in 1996, through the work of her last monastic daughter and the contribution of many others who held her dear. An English translation of her work was also published.

Boyan was the son of Krutogan and the nephew of Grubash. Boyan confessed his faith in Christ; however, his brother Milomir was a pagan. By decree of his brother, Boyan was beheaded for the True Faith in the year 827 A.D.

Eustratius was very wealthy and, being touched with love for Christ, distributed his entire estate for the sake of Christ and entered the monastery of Pecer and was tonsured a monk. When the Polovtsians waged war against Kiev in 1097 A.D., they plundered the monastery and slew many Christians, including monks. Eustratius, alone, with some of the faithful, were sold into slavery to a Jew in the city of Khorsum [Chresom]. This Jew ridiculed the Faith of Christ and attempted to coerce the Christians into embracing the Jewish religion. Seeing that they had no other alternative, they all agreed to starve themselves to death and not to deny the True Faith. Eustratius encouraged the Christians to follow that decision. They all died of hunger; some after three days, some after four and some after seven. Being accustomed to fasting, Eustratius, alone, remained alive and endured fourteen days without food. The Jew, angered because he lost money with which he purchased the slaves, took out his revenge on Eustratius by nailing him to a cross. Eustratius praised God from the cross and prophesied a severe and imminent death for the Jew. Wild with rage, the Jew pierced him with a spear. The saint of God gave up his soul to his Savior. His body was thrown into the sea, but it floated to the surface. Great miracles occurred over this martyr's body. Shortly after the death of Eustratius, the Byzantine emperor decreed that the Jews of the city of Khorsum be punished for their wickedness toward Christians. This tormentor of Christians was hung on a tree and received the reward of Judas.

Born to the nobility, the daughter of the Duke of Alsace. Niece of Saint Odilia of Alsace. Nun. Abbess at Niedermünster Abbey, Regensburg, Germany.
• GUNTRAMNUS (Contran, Gontran, Gontram, Gunthrammus) (592) a repentant King of Burgundy in France. Having divorced his wife and ordered the execution of his doctor, he was overcome with remorse and lamented these sins for the rest of his life
Died March 28, 592. Saint Guntramnus, son of King Clotaire and Saint Clothildis, was crowned king of Orléans and Burgundy in 561, while his brothers Charibert reigned in Paris and Sigebert at Metz. In general, his life was that of a peacemaker. He protected his nephews against the wickedness of the dowager queens, Sigebert's Brunehault and Chilperic's Fredegonde. But he had a period of intemperance. He divorced his wife, Mercatrude, and hastily ordered the execution of his physician. He was overcome with remorse and lamented these sins for the rest of his life, both for himself and for his nation. In atonement, he fasted, prayed, wept, and offered himself to the God he had offended. Throughout the balance of his prosperous reign he gave examples of how the maxims of the Gospel could be rendered into effective policy. He was the protector of the oppressed, care-giver to the sick, and the tender parent to his subjects. He was open-handed with his wealth, especially in times of plague and famine. He strictly and justly enforced the law without respect to person, yet was ever ready to forgive offenses against himself, including two attempted assassins. Guntramnus munificently built and endowed many churches and monasteries. Saint Gregory of Tours relates many miracles performed by the king, both before and after his death, some of which he witnessed himself. At the time of his death, Guntramnus had reigned for 31 years. Almost immediately he was proclaimed a saint by his subjects. He was buried in the church of Saint Marcellus, which he had founded. The Huguenots, who scattered his ashes in the 16th century, left only his skull untouched in their fury. It is now kept there in a silver case. In art, Saint Guntramnus is depicted as a king finding treasure and giving it to the poor. Sometimes there may be three treasure chests before him, a globe, and cross on one.

Herodion of Patras was a relative of Saint Paul whom Paul greets in Romans 16:11. According to tradition, he was numbered among the Seventy Disciples and became bishop of Patras, where he suffered greatly. After beating, stoning, and stabbing him, they left him for dead, but St Herodion arose and continued to serve the Apostles. He was beheaded with Olympas in Rome while they were serving Saint Peter on the same day that St Peter was crucified.

• Hieromartyr PROTERIUS of Alexandria (457)
Ordained by Saint Cyril, Patriarch of Alexandria. Leader of the orthodox Christians in Alexandria. Appointed archpriest of Alexandria by Dioscorus, Patriarch of Alexandria. When Dioscorus began supporting heretical theologians, Proterus opposed him. When Dioscorus was denounced by the Council of Chalcedon in 451, Proterus was elected Patriach of Alexandria. Theologically, this divided Alexandria into two groups, almost like armed camps - supporters of Proterus and supporters of Dioscorus, and later Elurus, his successor. When imperial forces intervened to settle the matter, rioting broke out; Elurus was driven from the city, and Proterius was murdered in a church.

Saint Stephen lived under Emperor Leo the Armenian (813-820). Early in life he embraced monastic life and became hegumen of the Monastery of Triglia. Summoned by the Emperor who persecuted those who venerated the Holy Icons and called to disown this practice, he energetically refused, dealing with the godlessness of those who were asking it of him. After many punishments, imprisonments, and exiles, he committed his soul to God.
• TUTILO (915) a gifted and artistic monk at St Gall in Switzerland
Tutilo was a painter, musician and composer of music for harp and other strings, poet, orator, architect, metal worker, mechanic, head of the cloister school, and sculptor, but he is best known for his obedience, recollection, and aversion to publicity.
A large, powerfully built man. Educated at Saint Gall's monastery in Switzerland where he stayed to become a Benedictine monk. Friend of Blessed Notkar Balbulus. A renaissance man before the term was coined. Excellent student, he became a sought after teacher at the abbey school. Noted speaker. Poet and hymnist, though nearly all of his work has been lost. Architect, painter, sculptor, metal worker, and mechanic; some of his art continues to grace galleries and monasteries around Europe. Composer and musician, playing several instruments including the harp. No matter his talents or works, he preferred the solitude and prayers of his beloved monastery.

Taxiotis was a soldier from Carthage. He spent his entire life in grievous sinsbut finally repented, left the military service and lived a God-pleasing life. While he was with his wife on his estate near the city, he committed adultery with the wife of his farm worker. Afterwards, he was bitten by a snake and died immediately. Taxiotis was dead for six hours after which he arose. Then, on the fourth day, he spoke and related how and what kind of level of judgment he had passed through until he came to the level of judgment [Mitarstvo] for adultery. There, he fell into the dark abode of demons from which he was led out by an angel who attested on his behalf and was sent back in the flesh to repent for his latest sin. He repented for forty days, going from church to church, beating his head against the doors and thresholds, always crying and telling of the terrible sufferings which sinners undergo in the other world. He implored men not to sin but to repent for those sins already committed. On the fortieth day, with rejoicing, Taxiotis took up habitation into the Kingdom of the Merciful God.
