Both were also martyred for their Faith; Gervase was beaten to death with a lead tipped whip and Protase was beheaded. They are considered the first martyrs of Milan ever since St Ambrose, guided by a vision, unearthed their remains there. St Ambrose discovered their bodies in 386.

St John was from Poltava and a direct descendant of his patronal namesake, St John Maximovych, Metropolitan of Siberia. His ancestor translated the Divine Liturgy into Chinese, but it was his descendant, St John of Shanghai, who served it in China. St John founded the Orthodox Churches of France, the Netherlands and Spain. He founded an orphanage in the Philippines for Chinese, Filipino, Ukrainian and Russian children which he moved to San Francisco. There he built the Cathedral of the Mother of God, Joy of all who Sorrow and was enshrined there after his repose. His glorification as a saint was celebrated in many languages around the world and he is called the "Apostle of the Diaspora".

Laboring in this manner for the enlightenment of the pagan peoples and converting them from their former superstitions to the light of the true knowledge of Christ, he made his way to the lands around Mount Ararat, where he converted a multitude of people to Christianity. Having stirred up the pagan unbelievers, there they seized him and subjected him to tortures. Then they hung him up and shot arrows through him. In this way he delivered his soul into the hands of God, and received from Him the unfading crown of martyrdom.

Mary (Jacobe) was the wife of Cleopas, and the mother of the apostle St James the Less. Her other sons were Joshua, Jude and Simon – the “brethren of the Lord” – and she also had three daughters. She was present at the Crucifixion and afterwards went with Salomé and Mary Magdalene to the tomb to anoint Jesus’ body with spices. Being greeted by an angel who announced the Resurrection, they returned to tell the apostles of what they had learned. During the early persecution of Christians around 40 AD, the “three Maries,” were expelled from Jerusalem. They were placed, together with Lazarus, Martha, Maximin and Sidon, on a boat without oars or supplies. Sarah, their servant, was left behind, but Salomé threw her coat onto the waters and the coat became a raft, allowing Sarah to board. The boat eventually landed near Les Saintes-Maries-de-la-Mer in present-day France. The three Maries settled in Camargue, where they taught the good news of Christ. They peacefully gave up their souls to the Lord, and their grave became a popular place of pilgrimage.

Italian nobility who spent a wild youth. Acting as second, he witnessed his father kill another man in a duel, and Romuald sought to atone for the crime by becoming a Benedictine monk at Classe, Italy. Abbot from 996 to 999. A wanderer by nature, he established several hermitage and monasteries in central and northern Italy. He tried to evangalize the Slavs, but met with little success. Founded the Camaldolese Benedictines. Spent the last fourteen years of his life in seclusion at Mount Sitria, Bifolco, and Val di Castro. Spiritual teacher of St Wolfgang of Ratisbon.

圣殉道者佐西玛
