• Sainted BRICE (Britius, Brixius) 布里基 of Tours (444) a disciple of St Martin of Tours in France, in fact he was proud and ambitious. Chosen to be St Martin's successor at Tours, he was eventually driven out. He repented and was reinstated. Such was the change in him that his flock proclaimed him a saint immediately after his death
• CAILLIN of Ferns (6th c.) of Fenagh, Irish saint, son of Niata, was descended from Rudraighe, whose grandson, Fergus Mac Roigh, flourished at the beginning of the Christian era. His mother was Deighe, granddaughter of Dubhthach, chief poet of King Laogaire in the time of St Patrick
• CHILLIEN (Kilian, Chillianus, Chillien) of Aubigny (7th c.) born in Ireland and a relative of St Fiacre, he was a missionary in Artois in the north of France. His relics were enshrined in Aubigny near Arras

Convert who became Christian when the Holy Spirit appeared to her in the form of a dove; hence, the name Columba, meaning dove. Martyred by the king of Cornwall.

• Venerable Monkmartyr DAMASCENE 达玛斯基诺 (at first was called Diamantis) a monk in the Lavra of St Athanasius on a Mt Athos, beheaded before the gate of the Phanar at Constantinople (1681)

• Sainted 金口约安 JOHN Chrysostom, Patriarch of Constantinople (407) splendid preacher, and for his rare talent with God-inspired words he received from his flock the title – the "Golden-Tongued" (Grk. "Chrysostomos", Slav. "Zlatoust"). Greatest of Christian orators is commemorated not only today, but as one of the Three Holy Hierarchs (with St Basil the Great and St Gregory the Theologian)

This Saint's feast was transferred to this day instead of being celebrated on the anniversary day of his death because this day falls in occurrence with the feast of the Exaltation of the Venerable and Life-giving Cross (September 14).

Captured by barbarians and dragged from Pannonia to Autun, France. When he achieved freedom, he became a monk then abbot there. Abbot in Vienne, France where he led a large group of monks and nuns for over 40 years.
• VM MAXELLENDIS (Maxellend) at Caudry near Cambrai (670) stabbed to death in Caudry near Cambrai in the north of France because she wished to be a nun
Daughter of Humolin and Ameltrudis. Her parents arranged a marriage for her with Harduin of Solesmes, but Maxellendis felt a call to religious life. When Harduin and his party arrived to take her, Maxellendis refused, insisting she wished to become a nun. Angered by her defiance, Harduin killed her - and was immediately struck blind. Convinced him of his error, Harduin knelt beside the girl's coffin, prayed for forgiveness - and his eyesight was restored.
• Bishop MEGASIUS
• Martyr MITRIUS (Mitre, Metre, Merre) of Aix (314) a Greek slave belonging to a tyrannical master in Aix in Provence in France. He was savagely abused by his master and his fellow-slaves and was finally beheaded
This ancient martyr suffered under Dioclesian, at Aix in Provence, and is honoured as principal patron of that city. St Gregory of Tours makes honourable mention of him. His torments were various and dreadful; but a miraculous constancy enabled him to bear them with joy.
• NICHOLAS I, Pope (867)
Son of the Theodore, who held the title Defensor. An excellent student, known for his piety and eloquence. Ordained as a sub-deacon by Pope Sergius II, and then a deacon by Pope Leo IV. Elected pope after the disintegration of the empire of Charlemagne when Christianity was threatened by apathy and indifference, and churchmen were becoming worldly. Nicholas became a vigorous, politically active pope who strengthened the Holy See. He arbitrated temporal and religious disputes, often setting important precedents, such as upholding the right of a bishop to appeal to Rome against his archbishop. Worked to prevent the proposed divorce of Lothair of Lotharingia, who wished to re-marry. Even when Holy Roman Emperor Louis II occupied Rome, Nicholas refused to yield, and finally forced Lothair to reinstate his wife. Challenged the right of Photius to occupy the see of Constantinople, and tried to get Saint Ignatius of Constantinople re-instated. Worked with Boris I to introduce Roman ecclesiastical jurisdiction in Bulgaria, which had recently been converted by the Byzantines.

• Bishop QUINTIAN (527) 库因提安 born in North Africa, he fled to France to escape the Arian-Vandal persecution. Eventually he became Bishop of Rodez, but was exiled by the Arian Visigoths. He went to Auvergne where he succeeded St Euphrasius as Bishop of Clermont
• Bishop WARMONDUS (Varmond, Varmundo, Varmondus) of Ivrea (1012) Piedmont, Italy
Bishop of Ivrea, Italy. Built the cathedral, encouraged monasticism and learning in his see, and fought to keep the Church free from secular authority.
