On this day the Church remembers the man who lay by the Sheep's Pool in Jerusalem for thirty-eight years, waiting for someone to put him into the pool. The first one to enter the pool after an angel troubled the water would be healed of his infirmities, but someone always entered the pool before him. Seeing the man, the Lord felt compassion for him and healed him. The Kontakion for this Fourth Sunday of Pascha asks Christ to raise up our souls, "paralyzed by sins and thoughtless acts."

Day of Remembrance for those repressed (i.e. arrested, exiled, sent to the camps or shot) during the collectivisation of agriculture (1927-1933), in the forced-labour camps of the Gulag, and shot in their tens of thousands during the Great Terror of 1937-1938. Restoring the Names is our common cause. We also pray for the repose of the souls of the departed servants of God: innocently murdered in the hard times days, endured suffering and torment, who bitterly died in exile and imprisonment, of those their names You, O Lord, weigh themselves. God of spirits and of all humankind, as You trampled down death, overthrowing the evil one and granting life to Your world, will You, Lord, grant rest to Your servant now asleep in death, in a place of light, a place of renewed life, a joyous place, shunned alike by pain and sorrow and sighing. By Thine own Blood, O Savior, Thou hast ransomed mortal men, and by Thy death Thou hast delivered us from bitter death, granting us eternal life by Thy Resurrection. Give rest, then, O Lord, to all those who have fallen asleep in godliness, whether in wilderness or city, on the sea or land, in every place, both princes, priests and bishops, monks and married people, of every age and line, and count them worthy of Thy heavenly Kingdom. Have mercy, O Lord, if it, be possible, on the souls of Thy servants, departed to eternal life in separation from Thy Holy Orthodox Church. O Lord, Seek out the Lost Souls and if it be Possible, Have Mercy upon them, Unsearcheable and Unfathomable are Thy Judgements, O Master, Hold not this my prayer to be a sin, but let thy will be done, unto the ages of ages, Amen.
Here is the special prayer to Saint Varus (Uar) Patron Saint of Reposed Souls outside of The Orthodox Church:
O Holy, wondrous Martyr Varus, who, burning with zeal for the Heavenly King, didst confess Him before thy torturers and didst greatly suffer for Him! Now the Church doth venerate thee, as one glorified with the glory of heaven by Christ the Lord, Who granted thee the abundant grace to approach Him boldly. And now, standing before Him together with the Angels, rejoicing on high, beholding the Most Holy Trinity clearly, and enjoying the Uncreated Light, remember the suffering of our relatives who have died outside the Orthodox Faith, and accept our pleas, and as thou didst intercede for the unbelieving ancestors of Cleopatra and didst free them from eternal suffering, remember those who have died unbaptized and have been buried in an ungodly and UnOrthodox manner, and pray earnestly that they may be delivered from eternal darkness, that we may all, with one mouth and one heart, praise the Most Merciful Creator unto the ages of ages.

Archangel of God, Uriel! Beseech our Lord Jesus Christ that He may soften the hearts of my relatives who are sick with unbelief, enlightening their souls with the light of saving knowledge of the Orthodox Christian Church! Through thy all-powerful prayers, may they come to repentance, to belief in the Son of God, Who redeemed all mankind by His Blood. Amen.
• Hieromartyr Deacon JAMES of Numidia and Martyr MARIANUS of Lambesa, Lector (259) beheaded at Lambesa, North Africa
Deacon James in the same church as Saint Marianus, and imprisoned with him at Cirta (modern Constantine, Algeria) in the persecutions of Valerian. Tortured over several days to force him from his faith. During this torment he had a dream that showed him final triumph. Martyred with hundreds of others. His story was recorded by a fellow prisoner who was not killed.

Ravanica is a Serbian Orthodox monastery on Kučaj mountains near Ćuprija in Central Serbia. It was built in 1375–1377 as an endowment of prince Lazar of Serbia, who is buried there. The Ravanica church is called the birthplace of the new artistic movement "Morava school" because of architectural and artistic features. It is original blend of the Mount Athos and the cross-in-square five-domed model that became standard in the time of King Milutin.

NEW MARTYRS AND CONFESSORS in the 20th century
• Birthday of Royal Martyr Tsar NICHOLAS II (1868-1918)
• Martyr VUKAŠIN 邬卡辛 Mandrapa, of Klepci, modern-day Bosnia and Herzegovina (1943) martyred by fascists during World War II for refusing to acknowledge the local nazi leader Ante Pavelic
He is seen as a testament to the Serbs' strong faith. Mandrapa was a farmer and merchant, born in Klepci (at the time the Ottoman Empire, modern-day Bosnia and Herzegovina). He and his family lived in Sarajevo and then returned to Klepci, but were arrested and sent to the Independent State of Croatia Jasenovac death camp, for both their Serbian ethnicity and for refusing to convert from Orthodox Christianity to Roman Catholicism. At least two of his nephews are said to have died at Jasenovac before he did. In January 1943, Mandrapa was singled out by a Croatian Ustaše, surnamed Friganović (first name Josip or Mile), who had observed his stoic behavior during the forced labor days and the slaughter of prisoners at night. He was mutilated by Friganović, after his repeated refusals to praise Ustaše leader Ante Pavelić. For as long as Mandrapa could speak, he told Friganović "radi ti, dijete, svoj posao." ("Do your job, child" in Serbian): as a result his ears, tongue and nose were cut, then his eyes and heart were gouged out, and his throat was slit.
• Blessed SOPHIA (Myrtidiotissa in Schema) the ascetic of Kleisoura, Fool for Christ
This holy ascetic, newly glorified in 1911, was born as Sophia Saoulidi in 1883 in Trebizond, Turkey. In 1907 she married, but her husband disappeared seven years later, leaving her with a newborn son. Not long afterward her beloved only son also died. Turning from the world, she placed all her trust in God, spending her time in solitary prayer on a mountain near her town. In 1919 she arrived in Greece as part of the “exchange of populations” between Turkey and Greece. Not long after her arrival the Most Holy Theotokos appeared to her in a vision and said “Come to my house.” When Sophia asked her where to find her house, the Virgin replied “I am in Kleisoura.” Heeding these holy instructions, Sophia moved to the Monastery of the Nativity of the Theotokos in Kleisoura in northern Greece, where she remained for the rest of her life. She never took monastic tonsure, but lived in the monastery kitchen. She slept only two hours a night, giving over the rest of the night to prayer. She dressed in old, tattered clothes, but if anyone tried to give her better clothing she would give it away to the poor. Similarly, if anyone gave her money, she would hide it until she could give it to someone in need. She ate very little and showed no interest in food. Worldly people called her “Crazy Sophia”, but those with discernment saw her as a living saint. She was endowed with gifts of healing and prophecy: when visitors would come to her she would greet them by name even if she had never met them before, and would describe their family problems, offering counsel. In 1967 she was healed of a painful, life-threatening illness through a vision of the Holy Theotokos, the Archangel Gabriel and St George. She fell asleep in the Lord on May 6 (New Calendar) 1974, after a long life given over to prayer, asceticism and utter poverty. Her relics are enshrined in the monastery where she spent most of her life.
• Hieromartyr JOHN Karastamatis, Priest in Santa Cruz (1937-1985) martyred by the Satanists
Father John was a sensitive and beautiful soul. At the instruction of Elder Dorotheos, he wrote poems and religious hymns. He was deeply touched by the miracles of the Virgin and the lives of the saints. As a small child, he loved to go to St Nicholas monastery on theislandofAndros, saint whom he loved dearly. An icon of the Virgin from this monastery began to shed blood and myrrh and Father John began to talk about the miracles of Our Lady with greater divine zeal and many people of different faiths become Orthodox. His preaching has angered some who began to threaten him by phone and letters, to cease preaching. But Father John became even more passionate about his ministry saying: “As long as my eyes have tears, I will preach Christ and Orthodoxy.” He advised the faithful to guard themselves against the pitfalls of the Antichrist and not to take the mark. Then the telephone threats on his life become even more intense, but Father John did not worry for anything. In the evening of May 17, 1985 he telephoned the Abbot Dorotheos and asked him about the miracles of the myrrh streaming icon of Blessed Virgin – Myrrhovlytissa, because he wanted to preach a sermon on her for the following Sunday. The next day on May 18, Father John was at home alone with her son Photius. The presbytera (his wife) and their daughter Mary were away from home. The boy went out with his friends, and Father John left to the church to finish his sermon. The boy returned home later that evening and seeing that his father was missing anxiously went to look for him at the Church. There, the boy was faced with a terrible sight: his father was found on the floor slaughtered and unrecognizable… he had been hit in the head with a hammer and his whole body was butchered with knifes. As the police had later discovered, because father John didn’t die right away, the criminals took the cross he was wearing around the neck and hanged him with its chain. The blood poured from his wounds and flooded the floor of the Holy Shrine. The Satanists used his blood to write their slogans and the mark 666 on the walls of the Church. The blessed father John suffered martyrdom in the very place where he was photographed with the cross in his hand, almost prophesizing of what would follow.

This Saint Colman was a professor at Cork. About 664, he wrote a prayer in verse (or 'lorica') seeking protection for the yellow plague that killed one-third of Ireland's population. He took his students to an island in the ocean to escape the pestilence. En route they chanted the prayer, which is believed to be the only extant writing from Finbarr's (f.d. July 4) school at Cork. The prayer was included in Kathleen Hoagland's 1 000 Years of Irish Poetry published November 1999.

Monk of Lindisfarne Abbey. Noted for his personal sanctity, his extensive Bible knowledge, and his charity to the poor; he annually gave away a tenth of his goods and property. Bishop of Lindisfarne, England for eleven years; successor to Saint Cuthbert. Even as bishop he would make two 40-day retreats each year to live as a hermit in meditation. Built several churches in the region, and improved the structures at Lindisfarne. Bede wrote about him

Evodius is traditionally conceived as one of the 72 disciples commissioned by Jesus. Tradition has him ordained and consecrated bishop of Antioch by one of the Apostles, probably Peter, who it is said he succeeded. It is believed that Evodius coined the word: Christian.

According to popular tradition, she was the sister of St. Lateerin, who is likewise popularly known, at Cullin, in that part of the country, and to an older sister, who lived at Kilmeen. It it stated, according to a local tradition, that the angels of Heaven made a road, one night, from Kilmeen through Dromtariff and on to Cullin, so that the three sisters might the more conveniently visit each other once every week. Much obscurity hangs over their history, as their celebrity appears to be merely local; although, the people, in their part of the country, have a great veneration for those sisters.

This icon of patient endurance in the face of all that God sends us lived near Arabia about 2 000 years before Christ. He was a descendant of Abraham through Esau. Saint Job of Pochaev was born about 1551 in southwest Galicia of a pious Orthodox family. In his tenth year the Saint departed for the Ugornitsky Monastery of our Savior in the Carpathian Mountains. Tonsured after two years, he was ordained hieromonk about 1580. Renowned for his meekness and humility, Job was invited by the great zealot for Holy Orthodoxy in Carpatho-Russia, Prince Constantine Ostrozhky, to be Abbot of the Monastery of the Cross in Dubno. In his zeal for the preservation and propagation of the Orthodox Faith, and to counteract the propaganda of the Uniates, he printed and widely disseminated Orthodox spiritual and liturgical books. About 1600 he removed to the Mountain of Pochaev where at the insistence of the brethren, he became Abbot of the Monastery of the Dormition of the Theotokos, which he enlarged and made to flourish. Through his labours, a large printing works was founded at Pochaev and greatly assisted in the nurture of the Orthodox faithful in that region. His monastery became the center of the Orthodox Church in western Ukraine. The Saint reposed, having taken the schema with the name of John, in 1651, at the advanced age of one hundred.
In these times when many call for a false union with the enemies of Orthodoxy, let us call upon St Job the Wonderworker of Pochaev to pray for us to Christ God, who is glorified with the Father and the Holy Spirit, now and ever and unto the ages of ages. Amen!

The apostles John and James, the sons of Zebedee, had said to Jesus that they were willing to drink the cup of His passion so that they might share through him the joy of His resurrection. Our Lord responded to them, saying that they would indeed "drink of my cup." (Matt. 20:23). Subsequently James and John did share in Our Lord's passion by being martyred for their faith. Pious tradition has it that Saint John, under Emperor Domitian, was thrown into a cauldron of boiling oil "before the Latin Gate." Hence, this particular feast day. Through a miracle, this torture had no effect on him, and a church in honour of St John was built near the Latin Gate of Rome's Aurelian Wall, at the spot of the miracle's occurrence. Commemorates the attempted martyrdom of Saint John the Apostle in 95. John stepped out of the cauldron without injury, and instead was exiled to Patmos.

Saint Lucius was one of the prophets in the church at Antioch when Paul and Barnabas were consecrated for their apostolate (Acts 13:1). It is said that he was from Cyrene, which is the source of the tradition that he was the first bishop of the city in the Ptolemais in Africa.

Benedictine monk at Brescia, Italy. Abbot. On assignment from Pope Gregory II in 717, he re-built, re-staffed and re-invigorated the monastery at Monte Cassino, Italy following the Lombard invasions that had left the place damaged and deserted. Saint Tabitha, the widow raised from the dead by the Apostle Peter, was a virtuous and kindly woman, belonged to the Christian community in Joppa. Being grievously ill, she suddenly died. At the time, the Apostle Peter was preaching at Lydda, not far from Joppa. Messengers were sent to him with an urgent request for help. When the Apostle arrived at Joppa, Tabitha was already dead. On bended knee, Saint Peter made a fervent prayer to the Lord. Then he went to the bed and called out, "Tabitha, get up!" She arose, completely healed (Acts 9:36).

SYNAXARION on Sunday of the Paralytic
4th Sunday of Pascha
On this day, the fourth Sunday after Pascha, we commemorate the paralytic who was healed by the Lord, and we celebrate this as a miracle of our Lord God and Savior Jesus Christ.
The commemoration of this event is made on this particular day because it occurred during the celebration of the Hebrew fifty days ( between Passover and Pentecost ) .
Christ entered Jerusalem during this time of the Jewish festival, and He went to a place north of the Temple near the Sheep Gate called the Sheep's Pool. Built by King Solomon, this pool was covered by a dome that was supported by five sets of pillars, thus creating five porches. It was called the Sheep's Pool because the sacrificial lambs were washed there before they were offered in the Temple. An angel of the Lord came down at a certain time and stirred the water, and the first person to step into the water after it had been stirred was healed of whatever disease he possessed. Thus, the five porches were crowded with a multitude of sick folk as they awaited the moving of the water.
There Christ found a man who had been a paralytic for thirty-eight years and who, since he was so ill, did not have anyone to help him into the water. From this fact, we can learn how great a virtue it is to wait patiently. Since God was to grant baptism, the cleanser of all sins, He willed in His economy, according to the Old Law, to work this particular miracle through the use of water so that it would be that much easier to accept the mystery of Baptism.
Thus, Christ came to this paralytic, named Jairus, and questioned him, yet we should note that the paralytic did not ask for help. But Christ knew that He would be cured of his disease and said to him, "Pick up your bed and walk!" (John 5:8). Immediately, the ill man was made well and he picked up his bed and carried it on his shoulder to show that his deed was not just a fantasy in his mind, but a reality, and he went home.
Because it was a Sabbath (Saturday), the Jews did not allow him to carry his bed due to rabbinical regulations. But the paralytic brought the Lord Who had healed him before the Jews, saying it was the same One who told him to pick up his bed and walk, though it be a Sabbath, for he did not know who He was. During this time, a great number of people had gathered, and Christ had stepped aside and hidden himself.
However, Christ later found the man in the Temple and said to him, "Behold, you have been made well. Sin no more lest a worse thing come upon you" (John 5:14). Many incorrectly say that Christ said this because this man was going to strike Jesus when He was brought to stand before Caiaphas the High Priest. The striking of Jesus was a worse temptation, and yielding to that temptation would have resulted in the inheritance of the eternal fire of torment, as compared to only thirty-eight years of paralysis.
The Lord particularly showed through these words that the illness of paralysis that had befallen the man was due to his sins. However, not all sicknesses are due to sin, but to the weakness of our nature, gluttony and our trifling deeds.
When the paralytic understood that Jesus had made him well, he reported it to all the Jews. They were infuriated by this and sought to kill Christ, for He had broken the Sabbath. Then Jesus spoke many things and showed that it is right to do good on the Sabbath and that He is the One who stated that the Sabbath should be honored and that He is equal with the Father and that even as the Father works, so does He.
It should be noted that this paralytic is not the same one whose account is related in the Holy Gospel of St Matthew, for that miracle was done in a house, and men who were serving also heard, "Your sins are forgiven"; while this miracle was worked at the pool and the man had no one with him, as the Holy Gospel says. The five porticoes full of infirm men symbolize that the Hebrew race was infirm in its five senses: sight, touch, taste, hearing, and smell. These were the illnesses of the sons of Israel: they were not pure in their sight, for they beheld the miracles and yet disregarded them; they had no taste for being thankful, for they ate manna and desired meat; they did not have a whole sense of smell, for instead of the fragrance of the Master, they longed for the stench of the devil; their hearing was tainted, for they listened to the whistlings of the serpents and disregarded the teachings of the prophets; their sense of touch was useless, for they called their idols gods and rejected the living God.
This miracle is celebrated now because it happened during the fifty days, like the miracle of the Samaritan woman and the blind man. The preceding Sundays, celebrating St. Thomas and the Myrrhbearing Women, were in honor of the fact that they led many to belief in the Resurrection of Christ from among the dead; while these other Sunday commemorations until the Ascension are made because they occurred during the Jewish celebration of those distinguished fifty days. This, in short, is what we have learned from St John the Theologian.
