DAY 21. 3rd Sunday of the Great Lent. ADORATION OF CROSS
The Third Sunday of Lent is that of the Veneration of the Cross. The cross stands in the midst of the church in the middle of the lenten season not merely to remind men of Christ’s redemption and to keep before them the goal of their efforts, but also to be venerated as that reality by which man must live to be saved. "He who does not take up his cross and follow me is not worthy of me" (Mt.10:38). For in the Cross of Christ Crucified lies both "the power of God and the wisdom of God" for those being saved (1 Cor.1:24). For the catechumens of the early church, and the faithful preparing for Pascha today, the spiritual theme starts to change from personal faith, and personal effort, to Christ. The Church teaches that it is Christ's cross that saves. One cannot take up his own cross and follow Christ unless one has Christ's cross which he took up to save mankind. Partaking of this tree, one will no longer die, but will be kept alive. This is done to refresh, reassure and to encourage those participating in Great Lent. The Church equates the appearance of the cross at this time to the banners and symbols that precede the return of a victorious king. The Epistle reading is from Hebrews 4:14-5:6 and explains Christ's priesthood, and the Gospel lesson from Mark 8:34-9:1 ends with And He said to them, "Assuredly, I say to you that there are some standing here who will not taste death till they see the kingdom of God present with power."

• Hieromartyrs bishop NARCISSUS and his deacon FELIX (307) honoured as martyrs in Gerona in Catalonia in Spain
Born to he nobility. Priest, preacher and bishop of Gerona, Spain in the early 4th century. During the persecutions of Diocletian he fled to modern Augsburg, Germany with his deacon, Saint Felix of Gerona. There they befriended Saint Afra of Augsburg. Returning to Gerona, he and Felix were arrested and martyred. Legend associates him with the miracle of the flies which led to some of his patronage topics and iconography. In 1286 the army of Philip II of Burgundy laid siege to the city of Gerona. When the troops tried to desecrate the tomb of Saint Narcissus, it broke open, a cloud of stinging flies emerged, chased the soldiers and caused to much havoc that the French troops fled, leaving the city in peace.

She encouraged hospitality and love of one's neighbor, often in the most uncompromising of terms. She considered this to be the foundation of the Christian gospel, and she embodied it in her life. On March 30, 1945 — Great, Holy and Good Friday that year — Mother Maria was selected for the gas chambers, in which she perished the following day, on Great and Holy Saturday. Accounts are at odds about what happened. According to one, she was one of the many selected for death that day. According to another, she took the place of another prisoner, a Jew, who had been chosen. Although perishing in the gas chamber, she did not perish in the Church's memory. Survivors of the war who had known her would again and again draw attention to the ideas, insights and activities of the unusual nun who had spent so many years coming to the aid of people in desperate straights. She was glorified by the Church of Constantinople on January 16, 2004, along with her companions, Priest Dmitri Klepinin, her son George (Yuri) Skobtsov, and Elie Fondaminsky. They are commemorated on July 20 as Martyrs of Paris.

Archbishop of Jerusalem (386)

He succeeded his father 539/540 as Bishop of Langres and is said to have held this office for 33 years. Like his father, he resided chiefly in Dijon. Tetricus participated in the Fifth Council of Orleans (549) and The Council of Paris (552). According to Gregory of Tours, who was a later relative of Tetricus, the Merovingian king Chilperic I had a dream in which Tetricus with Agroecula of Chalon and Nicetus of Lyon appeared to the king.
(Mark. 8, 34 – 9, 1)
The Cross is not plain.
It has something sweet, joy
Sunday of the Adoration of the Holy CrossToday, the third Sunday of Great Lent, the Church dedicates its adoration to the Holy Cross. We worship the Cross, but with the Cross there are also always flowers. There, the place where Christ was crucified, there was a garden with basil and flowers. For this reason, wherever the Cross is, there is also the basil and usually flowers. The Cross isn’t plain, and drab, but it also has something sweet, something very joyful. This is not accidental. Christ felt pain, was afflicted, poured out his blood, but within all of this pain came the salvation of man, came joy. And all of this came from God for the salvation, for the joy, of man.
Man, however, must pick up his cross. And man’s Cross isn’t simply life’s difficulties, though these help you to grieve for sin. The more someone is crucified, is in pain, and grieves for his sin, the more grace comes: he is set free, is liberated. These go together. It is necessary, however, for man to take the right stance. To accept whatever cross God allows, and to take refuge in Christ, in order to help him lift his Cross with the hope of salvation. However much man doesn’t want to suffer, to hurt, or to be crucified together with Christ, this much is he also unhappy.
On this day, we venerate the Cross. We become one with Christ, and in this way we gain strength to continue on, in order to traverse the remaining weeks of Great Lent.

In the Name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit.
O God, be merciful to me, a sinner.
O Lord Jesus Christ, Son of God,
for the sake of the prayers
of Thy most pure Mother,
our holy and God-bearing fathers and all the saints, have mercy on us.
Amen.

Blessed be God.
