• "SUMORIN TOTMA" Icon of the Mother of God (1554)
The Sumorin Totemsk Icon of the Mother of God was glorified by numerous healings at the Spaso-Sumorinsk monastery of the city of Tot'ma. When the inhabitants of the city turned to tsar Ivan the Terrible for permission to build a monastery in their city, the Rostov archbishop Nikandr in the year 1554 bestowed upon the Monk Theodosii the grammota-grant for building. The hegumen of the Prilutsk monastery blessed the Monk Theodosii with an icon of the Mother of God for success at building the new monastery. The icon thereafter received the name Sumorinsk-Totemsk ("Sumorinsk" derives from the family name of the Monk Theodosii, and Totemsk from the placename Tot'ma). After the death of the monk, the wonderworking icon was situated in a kiosk-case in front of the crypt of the saint at the Ascension church of the monastery.
It is to be noted, that for many of the sick, the Monk Theodosii has appeared to them holding this icon in his hands.
• Remembrance of ALL THE DEPARTED who suffered in the years of persecution for Faith in Christ
• New Martyrs and Confessors of RUSSIAN Church // MOVABLE HOLIDAY ON THE SUNDAY CLOSEST TO JANUARY 25TH //
Today we commemorate the uncounted millions of faithful who suffered and died at the hands of the Soviet atheists. These include the Tsar-martyr NICHOLAS II and the rest of the Russian Royal Family (July 4); Patriarch TIKHON (March 24); Grand Duchess ELIZABETH (July 5); thousands of martyrs, both clergy and laity, whose names are known; but also millions upon millions of simple believers whose names have been lost to history. The number of the New Martyrs of Russia far exceeds all those from the "Age of the Martyrs," the first three centuries of Christianity. May their memory be eternal.
Martyrdom is the same thing as Christianity. These two words have the same meaning. Hatred against Christ and His followers should not surprise us. It is natural, it was foretold by the Lord Himself, Who said: “If the world hate you, ye know that it hated me before it hated you” (John 15:18).
Today we celebrate the memory of the Holy New Martyrs and Confessors of the Russian land. These are all the multitude of bishops, priests, monks, nuns, laymen, laywomen, and children who were killed or suffered gravely because of their faith and their refusal to compromise their faith, to cooperate with the new revolutionary government, or to renounce their faith in Christ. The experience of each and every one of these martyrs and confessors was unique. Even if their manner of death or suffering was similar in many cases, each of them brought with them to that moment of confession or martyrdom a unique soul, a unique set of experiences and circumstances. If we were to enter into the mind and heart of each one of these saints and observe the unique way in which they experienced their suffering and the knowledge of their coming martyrdom, we would see a wondrous tapestry of experience. And the thread which holds all this tapestry together is love, love for Christ. was foretold by the Lord Himself, Who said: “If the world hate you, ye know that it hated me before it hated you” (John 15:18).

Lord and Master of my life, give
勿许我陷于懈惰、好奇、me not a spirit of sloth, vain
curiosity, lust for power and idle talk.
But give to me, your servant, a spirit
of soberness, humility, patience and love.
O Lord and King, grant me to see
而非判断我的弟兄,my own faults and not to condemn
因赞美归于你,my brother: for blessed are you
阿民!to the ages of ages. Amen.

• Venerable JAMES 雅各 the Hermit and Faster of Porphyreon in Palestine (6th c.) the Ascetic, Who Murdered Yet Overcame Despair
The Roman Martyrology says: "In Palestine the memory of Saint James the Hermit, who, after a lapse from the faith, lay hid long in a tomb for penance, and renowned for miracles, passed to the Lord." A later legend changes the "lapse from the faith" into one of homicide, committed under the most romantic circumstances. The Prayer of St James the Ascetic from Within the Sepulcher: How can I presume to gaze upon Your holy icon, O Master, with my polluted eyes? How can I begin to confess my sins? With what heart and conscience can I approach? How will I move my impious tongue and soiled lips towards Your praise? For what sins shall I ask forgiveness first? How will I open my foul mouth to ask Your forgiveness for my wickedness? O Lord, lover of mankind, have pity upon me and bestow Your mercy upon me, unworthy as I am. Cast me not into perdition, though I am ungodly and iniquitous. I, the thrice-wretched, have committed fornication and murder, thereby defiling my soul in two-fold measure! I am not worthy to walk on Your earth! I dare not lift these profane and indecent eyes of mine to You in the heavens; but I take refuge in Your infinite compassion. Have mercy on me, though I am irreverent and undeserving. Have pity and compassion on me, who am filled with passions, and leave me not to the noetic dragon who will greedily devour me with his charming delights. But, with Your almighty hand, raise me up from this unclean and insatiable abyss!
