Ὁ Ἅγιος Κλήμης ὁ Ἱερομάρτυρας Ἐπίσκοπος Ρώμης
Exiled to the Crimea, on the far eastern frontier of the Empire. There the holy bishop continued to work wonders of evangelism, founding 75 churches in one year and bringing countless pagans to faith in Christ. Finally, to put a stop to the Saint's work, the Governor of the region had him cruelly tortured, then thrown into the Black Sea with an anchor around his neck.
Pope St Clement built up the first Christian community on the shores of the Black Sea in the area of Tauria and Kherson. He was martyred by being thrown into the sea with an anchor tied around his neck. His disciples Sts Phoebus and Cornelius led the Christian community in prayer for three days when the miracle of the receding waters of the Black Sea occurred, revealing a sunken Greek town where the relics of St Clement, together with his anchor, came to rest. This miracle occurred annually on this day for many years and St Clement’s anchor proved to be a wonderworking relic as well. Upon his baptism at Kherson, St Volodymyr the Great retrieved the holy relics of the Head of St Clement, those of his disciple St Phoebus and the miraculous anchor of St Clement and returned to Kyiv with these. What St Volodymyr saw was that the anchor had, in and of itself, become the symbol of Christianity at Kherson. He adapted it along the lines of the Byzantine emblem with the Cyrillic “B’s” facing one another to signify “the King of Kings” with the middle vertical bar completed with a Cross. This has been extensively researched by modern Ukrainian scholars who have published their findings and have concluded that the Ukrainian Cross-Trident is derived from the venerated anchor of St Clement, pope of Rome. St Clement’s skull is kept with the 61 myrrh-bearing skulls of the Kyiv Caves Lavra in a silver chalice into which it drips Holy Myrrh. St Volodymyr the Great dedicated his Royal Chapel to St Clement and St Clement’s icon is included on the wall of the St Sophia Cathedral. Sts Cyril and Methodius took other relics of St Clement to Rome where they are today enshrined in the San Clemente Basilica.

In the vision the Master Christ had appeared to him as an adolescent of 12 years of age wearing a white garment torn from head to foot which He held with His hands to His breast to cover His nakedness. When Saint Peter asked the Lord who rent His garment, the Lord answered that it was Arius, and that he must not be received back into communion because he rent and tore asunder His people in the Church. The Lord also told Peter to bless Achilles as his successor and Alexander as Achilles' successor so as to prevent Arius from coming to the episcopal throne of Alexandria. Eventually, the motif of the torn garment became a metaphor for schisms and for the Arian misinterpretation of the Trinity.
