There is one God, the Father of the living Word, who is His subsistent Wisdom and Power and Eternal Image: perfect Begetter of the perfect Begotten, Father of the only-begotten Son. There is one Lord, Only of the Only, God of God, Image and Likeness of Deity, Efficient Word, Wisdom comprehensive of the constitution of all things, and Power formative of the whole creation, true Son of true Father, Invisible of Invisible, and Incorruptible of Incorruptible, and Immortal of Immortal and Eternal of Eternal. And there is One Holy Spirit, having His subsistence from God, and being made manifest by the Son, to wit to men: Image of the Son, Perfect Image of the Perfect; Life, the Cause of the living; Holy Fount; Sanctity, the Supplier, or Leader, of Sanctification; in whom is manifested God the Father, who is above all and in all, and God the Son, who is through all. There is a perfect Trinity, in glory and eternity and sovereignty, neither divided nor estranged. Wherefore there is nothing either created or in servitude in the Trinity; nor anything superinduced, as if at some former period it was non-existent, and at some later period it was introduced. And thus neither was the Son ever wanting to the Father, nor the Spirit to the Son; but without variation and without change, the same Trinity abideth ever. - a declaration of faith by Saint Gregory

An Arian woman struck the saint on the head with a stone, killing him. The murderers hid his body in a cave, where a Christian who kept straw there found his body. Ὁ Ἅγιος Ματθαῖος ὁ Ἀπόστολος καὶ Εὐαγγελιστής
He is represented in iconography as having the figure of a man at his side, the first of the symbolic animals of Ezechiel (Ezechiel 1:10), because his Gospel begins by the genealogy, according to the flesh, of Our Lord Jesus Christ.
When the holy apostle was fervently entreating God for the conversion of the Ethiopians the Lord Himself appeared to him in the form of a youth. He gave him a staff, and commanded him to plant it at the doors of the church. The Lord said that a tree would grow from this staff and it would bear fruit, and from its roots would flow a stream of water. When the Ethiopians washed themselves in the water and ate the fruit, they lost their wild ways and became gentle and good. When the holy apostle carried the staff towards the church, he was met by the wife and son of the ruler of the land, Fulvian, who were afflicted by unclean spirits. In the Name of Christ the holy apostle healed them. This miracle converted a number of the pagans to the Lord. But the ruler did not want his subjects to become Christians and cease worshiping the pagan gods. He accused the apostle of sorcery and gave orders to execute him. They put Saint Matthew head downwards, piled up brushwood and ignited it. When the fire flared up, everyone then saw that the fire did not harm Saint Matthew. Then Fulvian gave orders to add more wood to the fire, and frenzied with boldness, he commanded to set up twelve idols around the fire. But the flames melted the idols and flared up toward Fulvian. The frightened Ethiopian turned to the saint with an entreaty for mercy, and by the prayer of the martyr the flame went out. The body of the holy apostle remained unharmed, and he departed to the Lord.
The ruler Fulvian deeply repented of his deed, but still he had doubts. By his command, they put the body of Saint Matthew into an iron coffin and threw it into the sea. In doing this Fulvian said that if the God of Matthew would preserve the body of the apostle in the water as He preserved him in the fire, then this would be proper reason to worship this One True God.
That night the Apostle Matthew appeared to Bishop Platon in a dream, and commanded him to go with clergy to the shore of the sea and to find his body there. The righteous Fulvian and his retinue went with the bishop to the shore of the sea. The coffin carried by the waves was taken to the church built by the apostle. Then Fulvian begged forgiveness of the holy Apostle Matthew, after which Bishop Platon baptized him, giving him the name Matthew in obedience to a command of God. Soon Saint Fulvian-Matthew abdicated his rule and became a presbyter. Upon the death of Bishop Platon, the Apostle Matthew appeared to him and exhorted him to head the Ethiopian Church. Having become a bishop, Saint Fulvian-Matthew toiled at preaching the Word of God, continuing the work of his heavenly patron.

O Lord my God, against whose will not a single sparrow falls into the snare. It was You Who made room for David in his sorrow (Ps. 4:1), Who proved the Prophet David stronger than lions (Dan. 6), and granted a child of Abraham to be victor over torture and flames (Dan. 3:14). You know also, Lord, the infirmity of our nature. You see the struggle set before us. Our foe strives to snatch us, the work of Your right hand, away from You and to deprive us of the glory which is in You. On November 15/28 we commemorate the blessed respose of St Herman of Alaska. Following St Herman's repose there arose terrible weather and his body could not be reached on Spruce Island for a month, and due to poor record-keeping this date passed into history as the date of his repose. December 13/25 remains a celebration of St Herman, while many places also commemorate his repose on November 15/28, such as the St Herman of Alaska Monastery in Platina, CA.

圣斐理伯 Saint Philip the Apostle
Apostle Philip arrived in Phrygia, in the city of Phrygian Hieropolis, where there were many pagan temples, among which was a pagan temple devoted to snake-worship, having within it an enormous serpent. The Apostle Philip by the power of prayer killed the serpent and healed many bitten by the snakes. Among those healed was the wife of the city governor Amphypatos. Having learned that his wife had accepted Christianity, the governor Amphypatos gave orders to arrest Saint Philip, his sister, and the Apostle Bartholomew travelling with them. At the urging of the pagan priests of the temple of the serpent, Amphypatos gave orders to crucify the holy Apostles Philip and Bartholomew. At this time there began an earthquake, and it knocked down to the ground all those present at the judgement-place. Hanging upon the cross at the pagan temple of the serpent, the Apostle Philip prayed for the salvation of those that had crucified him, to save them from the ravages of the earthquake. Seeing this happen, the people believed in Christ and began to demand that the apostles be taken down from the crosses. The Apostle Bartholomew, in being taken down from the cross was still alive, and he baptised all those believing and established a bishop for them. But the Apostle Philip, through whose prayers everyone remained alive, except for Amphypatos and the pagan priests, – died on the cross. Mariamna his sister buried his body, and together with the Apostle Bartholomew she set out preaching to Armenia, where the Apostle Bartholomew was crucified (11 June); Mariamna herself then preached until her own death at Likaoneia (17 February).
Among the Slavic peoples, the Nativity Fast is often called Filipovka since it commences immediately after this feast.
The holy Apostle Philip is not to be confused with Saint Philip the Deacon (October 11), one of the Seventy.

Uros III of Dečani, King of Serbia (1336)
Do not I hate them, O Lord, that hate Thee? (Psalm 139:21)
The King of Serbia, Milutin, had a jealous, scheming wife who turned him against his own son, Prince Stefan. Convinced of the prince's treachery, the king ordered him blinded. In great pain, Stefan finally fell asleep in the Church of St Nicholas. Nicholas appeared to him in the church at Ovèče Polje (Field of the Sheep) and showed him his eyes saying: ``Stefan, be not afraid: behold your eyes in my palm. In due time, I will return them to you.'' Stefan spent five years in Constantinople as a prisoner in the Monastery of the Pantocrator. By his wisdom and asceticism, his meekness and piety, his patience and benevolence, Stefan not only surpassed all the monks in his monastery, but all monks in Constantinople. When five years had passed, St Nicholas again appeared to him and said: ``I came to fulfill my promise.'' He then traced the sign of the Cross on the blind king, and Stefan received his sight. The saint touched Stefan's eyes and then vanished. When Stefan woke up, he could see! However, he kept this a secret, still wearing cloth bandages over his eyes, and pretending to be blind. After three more years, King Milutin died. Prince Stefan told how Saint Nicholas came and his sight returned. Then Stefan returned to Serbia and became king. While he was king, he founded Decani Monastery, with a monastery church dedicated to St Nicholas. He also founded a leprosy hospital. In gratitude to Saint Nicholas King Stefan sent a silver altar and great icon to the Saint Nicholas basilica in Bari, Italy. Saint Nicholas appeared to King Stefan a third and last time, saying "The Lord is calling you to him, Stefan—be ready to depart this life." Preparing for his death, the king gave his riches to the monastery ahd leprosy hospital. Soon after, his own son led an uprising and had King Stefan killed. Stefan lived his earthly life as a martyr, and died as a martyr in the year 1336, receiving the wreath of immortal glory from the Almighty God Whom he had faithfully served.

• MARTIN 玛尔提诺 the Merciful 仁慈者, bishop of Tours (316-397)
One winter while on duty in Amiens, France, as a 4th century Roman soldier, Martin, yet a catechumen, came across a beggar barely dressed in rags and freezing in the cold. Moved with compassion, Martin drew his sword and skillfully slashed his own military cloak, giving half to the poorly clad beggar. Later that night in a dream, Christ appeared wearing the same torn cloak Martin had given to the beggar. Thereafter, Martin was fully received into the Faith, was released from military duty, settled in France, founded the area’s first monastic community, and went on to become Bishop of Tours. Having endured scourging and exile, Martin courageously and continually refuted the Arian heresy and defended the fullness of the Gospel. Upon his death in 397, Martin became the patron saint of France. His military cloak became a relic often carried into battle by France’s army. Whenever in the field, a tent was set up to enshrine the relic of St Martin’s cloak, or “cappa” in Latin, and the priests who were entrusted to care for it were called “cappellani”. On the island of Í, St Columcille saw this and said, “This work which bishop Áed does now is mighty. Behold, he leads a sinner, undeserving, with himself to heaven, without any demons bothering him.” Indeed St Áed passed to heaven like Christ with the thief, among the sweet songs of the choirs of angels, where he will rejoice without sorrow for eternity with our reigning Lord, Jesus Christ, with the Father and the Holy Spirit for ever and ever. • The miraculous Icon of Panagia GORGOEPIKOOS of the Most Holy Theotokos "The Quick Hearer" ("She Who Is Quick to Hear" also "Quick to Obey") 迅敏垂听之母 of Mt Athos (1664)
Let them and all Orthodox Christians come to Me in their necessities, and I shall not forsake them. All their petitions will be granted by My Son, because of My intercession with Him. My icon shall be called She who is Quick to Hear, for I shall speedily fulfill the petitions of those who hasten to it. The Most Holy Theotokos then fulfilled and continues to fulfill Her promise of quick help and consolation for all those who come to Her with faith.
It should be noted that prior to the miracle above regarding Monk Neilos, the names of the Panagia's icon at Docheiariou in 1563 were Vrefokratousa (Infant-bearer), Fovera Prostasia (Awesome Protection) and Gorgoepikoos (Quick to Hear). Yet when the Panagia revealed her name a century later there was a different spelling to the last that is hard to portray in English but looks like this in Greek - it went from Γοργοεπήκοος to Γοργοϋπήκοος (in English the "e" is a long "e" sound). What this means is that not only is the Theotokos "Quick to Hear", but she is also showing another attribute of herself by calling herself "Quick to Obey".
• Dedication of the Lateran Basilica (324)
The oldest and first in rank of the four basilicas of Rome, Italy. The name is derived from the Laterani family, on the site of whose palace the basilica stands. Constantine presented this palace to the Church. The original church building, probably adapted from the hall of the palace, was dedicated to the Saviour, and from its splendor was known as the Basilica Aurea. Though several times destroyed and rebuilt, the basilica retained its ancient form, being divided by rows of columns into aisles and having an atrium with colonnades. The tasteless restoration of the 17th century changed its appearance. A monastery was formerly between the basilica and the city wall of which the cloister still remains. The original apse survived until 1878, when it was destroyed and a deeper apse built. The ancient mosaics have been preserved. The high altar, which is of wood and is believed to have been used by Saint Peter, is now encased in marble. In the upper part of the baldachinum are the heads of the Apostles, Peter and Paul. The baptistery is an octagonal edifice with porphyry columns. The font is of green basalt. This basilica has been the cathedral of Rome since the 4th century.

In a few hours his co-cellar St Iov Protopopov found in the middle of an unbroken field the body of the archpastor with a lot of bayonet wounds, with his hands turned out in the shoulders, elbows and hands. Job betrayed his honest remains to the land and for 12 years paid to the peasant that would not plow the field where the ashes of the martyr were at a shallow depth.
