Apodosis of the DORMITION
Ἀπόδοση ἑορτῆς κοιμήσεως Θεοτόκου
• Synaxis of PANAGIA PROUSSIOTISSA (Mother of God of Proussa) in Evrytania, Greece (829–842)
• The Annual Miracle of Panagia of HAROU in Leipsi
Panagia tou Harou is the name of the unique icon which depicts the Virgin Mary cradling the crucified Christ, rather than the Christ child, hence its name (haros in Greek means "death"). This icon is found in the church of St. John the Theologian, Leipsoi (Greece). The annual commemoration of the icon takes place on August 23 when the island of Leipsoi fills with pilgrims from all over the Dodecanese, to witness the procession of the icon around the entire island and see the annual blossoming of the dead bouquet of lilies on the icon. In the 1940s, a lady was praying to the "Panagia tou Harou" icon. Her prayers were answered, and in gratitude placed a simple bouquet of lilies on the icon. These lilies withered but remained on the icon. In the following year, at the leavetaking of the feast of the Dormition (August 23), these lilies blossomed again and gave off a fragrance. Since then, this miracle occurs annually on the day of the feast.
• The Miraculous Panagia FANEROMENI of Nea Artaki in Evia
The history of the original icon of Panagia Faneromeni dates back to the 12th century. It's location was revealed in a miraculous manner to the people of Kizikou in Asia Minor, who named it "the revealed one" (Faneromeni). Eventually a monastery was built on the spot of the discovery, and the icon was housed there until 1922 when the Orthodox were forced out of the region. Taking the icon with them, the people went to Constantinople, and the holy icon was placed in the Church of Saint George in the Patriarchate where it remains till this day.
These refugees, deprived of their homeland, their monastery and their holy icon, eventually came to Evia, Greece and settled in Nea Artaki. On 29 April 1951, which was Pascha Sunday, a miraculous event happened that was to forever change their ecclesiastical lives. Eight girls between the ages of ten and twelve years old were playing near the beach and singing songs. Suddenly, a short distance from where they were, a woman of exceptional beauty dressed in black and kneeling in prayer appeared. She was wearing a golden wrist band (χρυσά επιμανίκια) and over her head was a black veil and a halo. Seeing this, the girls became frightened and ran to their parents to tell them of this strange vision. When the parents arrived, the black-clad woman was gone. However, a trace of her presence was left behind with the imprint of her knees still in the dirt. The little girls related their experience to the local parish priest the blessed Fr. Spyridon Athanasiou, and he in turn informed the blessed Metropolitan Gregory (Pleiatho) of Halkida (1922-1968). The Metropolitan invited the little girls to explain to him everything, informing him also that the woman had appeared in their dreams and explained she was the Panagia and on the spot of her appearance a church ought to be built. Following this, the Metropolitan gave his blessing to have a church erected in honor of the Panagia.
• Panagia FANEROMENI of Nea Skioni in Halkidiki
Locals say that the icon weeps every time something bad is going to happen.
• Panagia NEOMONITISSA of Nea Moni in Chios
According to tradition, three monks, Nikitas, Joseph and John, who lived as hermits in a cave on Mount Provateon, kept seeing a light every night in a forest nearby. Since they could not find its source during the daylight, they decided to set fire to the forest; the fire miraculously stopped in front of a myrtle, which was not inflamed. The icon of Virgin Mary without the Christ Child was lying on its branches. Today this icon is treasured in the monastery and known as Panagia Neamonitissa.
• Synaxis of Panagia AGIOGALOUSAINA in Chios
The Church of Panagia Agiogalousaina is at the entrance of a cavern in the village of Agio Galas on the island of Chios. It is a small Byzantine-style church with a dome. In the interior there is a wood-carved icon screen and frescoes that once covered the entire church that date to 1721. According to tradition, a king (or emperor) exiled to Chios his daughter who suffered from leprosy. The sick girl reached a cave where a black-dressed woman took care of her. After three years the king had deeply regretted his decision and sent guards to bring her back. They found her totally healthy and cured from drinking the stalactite water that dripped in the cavern. Thus, the king ordered to erect a church in the interior, but every morning the workers were finding their tools outside the cave. So, the church was built outside the cave and the wider area was named Agio Galas in the 13th or 14th century, which was previously called Agios Thalelaios. Agio Galas (Holy Milk) received its name from the stalactites in the caverns of the area which drip with white milk-looking water. The church celebrates on August 15th and on August 23rd the locals organize a feast to celebrate the Apodosis of the Dormition of the Theotokos.

• The Monastery of Panagia MAVRIOTISSA in Kastoria
The Monastery of Panagia Mavriotissa (Greek: Παναγία Μαυριώτισσα) is a monastery that is built on the spot where troops of Roman military commander George Palaiologos encircled the attacking Normans in 1083. It is believed that the emperor Alexios I Komnenos (r. 1081-1118) built the monastery there to commemorate the event and to honor the Panagia to whom he ascribed the victory.
Surrounding the region of the lake of Kastoria there are 72 churches and chapels, Mavriotissa being one of the earliest of them. The monastery was initially named Mesonesiotissa ("in the middle of the island") and in the beginning of the 17th century it renamed itself to Krepenitissa ("of Krepeni") after the name of the nearby village Krepeni. Sometime from the middle to late 17th century it changed its name to Mavriotissa ("of Mavrovo") after the Greek village Mavrovo near Kastoria. The monastery was a significant landowner in the village of Krepeni. It was occupied at one time by many monks. It no longer functions as a monastery and up until recently was in severe disrepair. In 1998 Metropolitan Seraphim of Kastoria undertook a restoration of the monastery and began celebrating services once again. Its feast day is August 23, the Apodosis of the Dormition of the Theotokos, and is celebrated with an all-night vigil in which many faithful attend.
• Synaxis of Panagia KOUTSOURIOTISSA in Erateini of Phocis
The Panagia chose a rocky, steep hill about 800 meters above sea level, near the village of Amygdalia Doridos to have her Monastery built. Before the Monastery was built in 1670, a miracle took place leading to the discovery of her Holy Icon. A Monk of the Monastery of the Archangels in Aigio saw a light that was separate from any other light in its vividness and brilliance, and it always remained at the same spot. This made him wonder with curiosity what the light was. It seemed as if it would be a figure who was illuminated by God. Shortly thereafter his curiosity was satisfied. This Monk saw the Panagia in his dreams who basically told him: "At exactly the spot where you see the light is my icon and I want you to dwell there." These brief words were revealing, and he acted immediately. Going through Corinth into Erateini he came to the spot where he had seen the light. Having descended the steep cliff he came to a cave and at the entrance was a tree, where in its hollow trunk was the icon of the Panagia. A little further inside the cave he built a chapel that still exists today, and there he placed the Holy and Wonderworking Icon. This miracle became widely known and many pilgrims began to come. The Holy Icon became known as the Panagia Koutsouriotissa, after the hollow trunk of the tree where the icon was found. For the convenience of the faithful a church was built at the top of the hill in 1670, with cells surrounding it. It seems that it later became a Monastery which had satisfactory progress until 1825, when it was destroyed by the Turks. It was rebuilt in 1835 with the surrounding cells. This Monastery offered great service to the residents of the area, who fled to the Monastery for protection from the Albanian-Turks who chased them. The church and cells drew extensive damage from the earthquake of June 15, 1995 and with the tireless efforts of the new brotherhood and Metropolitan Athenagoras a new and beauteous church (katholikon) was built in the same place. Panagia Koutsouriotissa celebrates on February 2, Bright Tuesday, the Second Sunday of June (to celebrate the Enthronement of the Holy Icon), and August 23rd.

The mystic number seven marked some of the most important events and regulations among the Jews. Thus, the seventh day was the Sabbath; the seventh year was the sabbath of the land, in which the people were commanded not to sow the land, nor to prune the vineyards. And again, when seven weeks of years—(i.e. forty-nine years)—were past, the people were ordered to hold the jubilee on the fiftieth year, when "remission was to be proclaimed to all the inhabitants of the land. But, it is needless to multiply examples from the Old Testament, where the word occurs nearly one hundred times, as a sacred and peculiar mode of enumeration.

In recent years the preeminent French-Greek journalist and television host Nikos Aliagas has made more widely known throughout Greece and the global audience the feast of Saint Agatha in Stamna of Aitolia, which is where he is from. And after a miracle of the Saint, he baptized his daughter with the name Agatha. This festival takes place in the Chapel of Saint Agatha in Stamna on August 23rd, when the ninth day of the Dormition of the Theotokos is celebrated, and it exists as a custom since the Revolution of 1821. On 23 August 1824 when the Peloponnese suffered from the civil war, Mavrokordatos tried to prevent the spread of the phenomenon in Rumeli and above, and therefore called a secret meeting on Mount Zygos (seat of Psili Panagia, over the ruins of the old Monastery of the Panagia) with the chieftains of northwestern Greece. Finally they decided on an assembly which gathered in December that year. But because they were not in agreement and they were shouting at each other, confusion reigned. Suddenly an earthquake took place, which was considered an act of divine intervention for there to be a compromise. Thus was established the annual festival in commemoration of the event on August 23rd, but not in Psili Panagia because it had not been accessible to the people. It was decided to build a lower chapel in the name of Saint Agatha, who saved them from the earthquake. Since then there has been a traditional festival which is organized by rigged foustanella wearers, and has the participation of people from around the area as well as the surrounding counties. The procession traverses a long way and is with organ accompaniment and songs, such as: "I bid you goodnight, Saint Agatha my sweet, and we fire a shot, putting down the weapons...". When they reach the main square of Aitolia, the festival ends.
